Lamar Jackson

@Simba and i have both said this in the past multiple times - got to see this thing through to the end... can't be left with 'what ifs' with lamar - whatever it takes, we've got to do it - and i think ultimately they will do a deal because they know they have to, they had the luxury of being able to wait because lamar's not been threatening hold-outs or anything

i bet you if lamar threatens to hold-out or doesnt sign his franchise tag next year, you'll see the ravens pay up pretty quickly
Ehh, I'd be on the "not concerned" side of either of those scenarios if I'm the Ravens. For starters, its obvious at this point, but Lamar bares at least a significant portion of the failure to not sign an extension already. Second, if he doesn't sign the tag, so be it. He doesn't play, and he doesn't get paid. Lamar's nowhere close to being in the position to just decline to receive $45M+ next year. He ain't passing up that cash.

A hold out would be interesting, though again, it's like "OK, how long you going to hold out"? Still going to accept all those fines? I wouldn't anticipate to see him playing in any preseason games pretty much going forward anyway, so it would be whatever for me.

I don't think it gets this far, but if he wants to make it hostile, he can. And if that gets him out of two 18 months from now, so be it too.

my point about not signing the tag is that prevents him from being fined for holding out
and a hold-out wouldnt necessarily be hostile, it would just be him utilising his leverage

And that's fine. He can utilize any leverage he has. I'm just not sure it would shift the balance of the leverage in his direction.
If he wants to hold out and not practice, whether on the tag or not, so be it. That's on him. It's his performance that dictates his long term compensation, so if he thinks he can perform at a high level without practicing, so be it.

The tag situation I think is moot, largely because even if he doesn't sign it initially, he basically has to sign it by mid-July, otherwise he doesn't play. And he's not going to sit out. So worst case is he doesn't participate in mandatory OTAs. He's still there for camp and the preseason (though he likely wouldn't play in the preseason anyway).

I don't think he'll get a lot of public sympathy for a hold out either, because unlike this year, next year, he's paid fairly closely to what market value would be anyway. It's not like he's an elite QB in year 4 of a rookie deal playing for $6M salary anymore.

They’re smart enough to know that. Lamar gone or Lamar not living up to the contract both result in rebuilds. Sure, 1 of those options sets you up for quicker success in the form of draft pick compensation but that’s still last resort to me. You built an entire system around 1 guy. They have to see it through

So if *** really feels that Lamar will eventually get traded before next year, I feel more confident in my #SIIE of signing Lamar an extension.
Trade before next draft doesn't make any sense to me. I don't think it makes any sense to JLC either. The year after, perhaps, but he's not getting traded 7-8 months from now.

I’ve been wondering how the lack of an extension affects business decisions, especially for a guy that runs so well.
It’s a good question. It’s such a big part of his game. I would hope that when Dobbins and Edwards are both back there will be less of a need for him to run, at least designed run plays. He seems to not concern himself with injury, but you know he has to think about the possibility, and the effect it might have on his contract negotiations.
