The Running Game, The Mess and The Greg Roman

Wait hold up, I've never heard of this. The League turned this down? I remember the trade we tried making with the Saints or it was a three way trade with another team and the NFL said no. I never knew we almost had Hopkins but the NFL stopped it.
No that was clowney

We just didn’t pony up for hop

I know there’s a monetary aspect to it, but if the cap dudes can make it work, I wouldn’t be opposed to shipping out the 1 for a bonafide WR. Struggling to find one in the draft and we’re unlikely to attract one otherwise. Would make for a boring draft but something’s gotta give…

we've struggled outside of R1

but our last 2 1st rounders at the position have both shown pretty ecstatic highs vs what we're used to at the position - obviously Hollywood had some issues in the regular season with poorly timed drops and has never been a YAC weapon and Bateman through 2 years has spent so much time on injured lists

but both have been high quality players on the field who have the ability to stress defences with route-running, creating massive separation and also challenging them vertically too

obviously if someone proven and awesome becomes available then sure go after them... but that 2020 class was nothing like the 2019 class at WR and i doubt we'll see the sort of trading we did with that group (especially as part of the unique situation of the 2019 class was that the vast majority of these elite talents were drafted with no 5th year option...)

not against it - but not sure i see anyone viable to make that worth it - maybe ill change my mind when i get a proper look at this draft class...

Right now What I am thinking is :

Eric DeCosta has a huge hand in how this offense has sputtered . It starts with him. I don't like Talking about anybody being fired From their job but He should be held accountable For the poor performance of this offense and the product on the field.

It's time for a rebuild and that means coach Harbaugh Will be a head coach somewhere else.

The offensive coordinator Should also be held accountable And I'm sure that if Harbaugh goes, he goes with him.

I'm inclined to think that mike McDonald Should be given a chance to develop but I suppose that decision Would be up to the incoming Coach

I used to think very highly of the head coach In Arizona But as a play designer and offensive coordinator. He might be An interesting Coordinator here if he loses his job in Arizona

I Would also trade Lamar Jackson

that cardinals offence has been awful and kliff kingsbury has built an entire career off being carried in college by patrick mahomes

also EDC fucked up with the WRs and obviously that's a major issue

we've also seen him fix those sorts of issues - the problem has been that he's frequently fixed issues in the next offseason at the expense of other positions - he needs to get better at not doing that... but otherwise he's been a pretty great GM in terms of acquisition of talent via free agency and trade, has been good at signing important players to reasonable contracts before they hit free agency (obviously Lamar is the big outlier here), and has drafted some good players - albeit not to the level we'd hope and expect and has been short on superstars so far in his tenure

i really like EDC and i dont think there's any chance this could/should be the end of his tenure at GM

the drafting issues obviously fall at his feet but it must be said that it's a failing of the whole department that we've not had the impact from recent drafts that we'd hope - not been awful (necessarily) but not been what we'd expect although we were spoilt by 2018... ozzie's still there, hortiz is still there, kokinis is still there and one of the best admired scouting departments in the league working with them - it's on all of them too

and absolutely no way am i trading lamar
as long as lamar wants to be here - we should do everything we can to get him to stay

True. Even Andrews has been mediocre for months

that's a direct byproduct of being the only weapon in the passing game
the lack of vertical threat in the offence condenses space and reduces the space he can work in
the lack of WRs or other passing game weapons to relieve pressure also allows defences to double him and focus on him in the passing game especially in key situations

Thought I would feel a little better this morning but nope lol. 3 freaking points against the Browns!!!!!

Please give us the Christmas present we all want FIRE ROMAN!

I know we will keep his playbook way too late into the season, but maybe we can have someone who figures hey the running is working let's continue to run.. I mean is this OC that incompetent? The answer is yes, yes he is! It's not like these issues haven't happened with his previous teams right.....

I'm angry at the whole state of the Ravens and the way they've mismanaged everything since Lamar and the 2018 draft class fell at their feet, but I'd lean towards giving DeCosta another chance.

I don't like the way he's constructed the roster but you could argue that he was constructing it to suit the coaches we've got.

It's in his favor that Ravens still do have a talented roster, certainly above average, maybe top third, so I don't think there are grounds for sacking him yet.

Maybe a new head coach with new ideas might shake him out of some of his "this is the way we're going to do it because this is the way the Ravens have always done it" type thinking, that hasn't kept pace with changes in the NFL.

Seems like this is actually a sacking thread instead of a post game thread. The coaching in this game tho has to be in the forefront from time management to playcalls. Bad clock management at the end of the 1st half. Its stupid to not use your 1st t/o until under 30 seconds. Then the clock running to zero on a critical 4th down play. The whole damn thing was rushed. Seriously whoever does post games being Mink or whoever it is should hound the fuck out of Harbs how this continues to be an issue. Week in week out same time problems. Then the playcalling. What happened in the 4th to the 2nd and long runs?????? They worked all freaking game so lets go away from what works????? 3rd and manageable so we can keep the defense off balance but when its 3rd and 13 yeah no mystery there. How bout some screens on 2nd and long? Jeezus pete!!! Also to say Tucker did not lose this game!!!!! When their kicker misses 2 FG's also? When it comes down to this game besides coaching issues turnovers and losses of downs decided this.

Our roster is constructed pretty good imo.. i mean we dnt have wrs but its not like we havent tried.. our way has kept us competitive forever.. dnt wanna end up like browns, bengals and all those other teams relies on a qb for about 5yrs then the franchise disappear for 20 yrs again

yeah there's no issue with the roster construction beyond the lack of attention to WR depth and lack of contingency planning for a bateman injury

the rest of this team is absolutely stacked

on defence, we've got the best S group in the league, a decent CB group, one of the better LB groups in the league, a top 10 pressure unit upfront and a top 2 run defence based on that inexpensive but impactful DL and EDGE group

on offence, we've got an elite QB, a good (albeit unhealthy) RB group, a weapon at FB, a top 3 TE group, a top 5 OL... but the worst WR group in the NFL by far once Bateman went down

Last year DeCosta failed to provide decent backups on the offensive line and we didn’t make the playoffs because of it.
This year he failed to provide us with fast backups at the receiver position and it will sink us this year .

Well, a Christmas activity kept me from watching this debacle, but I did listen to the local broadcast of the whole first half during the drive. When JH decided to once again go for it instead of taking the points after a pretty decent drive, the die was cast! I'm no longer shocked at the OFF stalling and sputtering. You can see the difference in plays and how GR goes away from things that ARE successful into things where he's trying to be the smartest guy in the room and trying to "trick" the DEF by doing something they don't expect, but its the same thing they did 4 out of the last 5 times, so it's really no trick at all. Last year it was the short out to Andrews, this year it is Ricard as RB instead of putting him to his strength as a lead blocker for one of our actual HEALTHY RB's.

I get going for it on the last two turnover on downs with Tucker missing a couple FG's; what do you have to lose. But, what was it, two running plays in the last 14 minutes? It has to be bizarro-world we've slipped into when that was the only effective part of yesterday's game and it's not utilized in the whole final quarter.

We need to keep this DEF together. This unit is getting pretty good.

I have not listened to the 98Rock broadcast of the game much this year. Basically, until yesterday, I just heard it when having to take the kids someplace during a game. But I need to applaud Rod Woodson and Jerry Sandusky. Rod Woodson's commentary about what the Ravens were doing, how each player needed to adjust, what the Browns were doing well - EXCELLENT! And Jerry's play by play is really good. I had to turn to Sirius at the start of the 3rd and it was pitiful in comparison. It was all commentary, little play-by-play, and critique about what what other teams doing instead of focusing on the game.

I can imagine watching the game was about as exciting as waiting in a 2hour line to see as unimaginative Christmas light display. Brutal.

The body language of the Ravens early on told me that this game was gonna be a disaster.
They seemed uninterested and ill prepared .
I never felt like this team was playing with intensity and they certainly never matched the Browns’ intensity.
I hope this game is an aberration regarding this because it really bodes poorly for any playoff success , if we make it ,

Now the silver lining (and piggybacking off @rossihunter2 's post above yours) is how he was able to turn a very questionable OL last season to a strong unit this season. I refuse to believe that EDC hasn't looked at this WR group and said "yeah we straight."
