Oh shit

This is the first bit of news to scare me
The Bucs quite literally cannot create a contract that the Ravens could not match. They still need to clear more cap space to get under the cap and they functionally cannot make enough cap space to make an offer the Ravens could not match even if the Ravens do not do more moves.

Yeah I misread that post. I thought it was saying they made 44m available, didn’t realize this was a push to reach cap compliance

Lol.. so its OK for the team when it's just business, but not the player? I'm not saying sit out the year but camp and everything else can go to hell. I'm showing up latest possible date without losing money and then signing the tag. He did everything right last year and what did it get him?
Well I mean he'll have new OC and hopefully new receivers to throw to, and his solution to that is not participate until they force him to.

That's an option. Not sure its a good one. By that point, he'll still be on the tag, meaning still no long-term deal, and he'll still have to prove himself yet again this year that he's worthy of whatever he's asking for. Since at that point, the entire league will have definitively told him "no, you are not".

After his 2019 season, any FO worth their salt would have made Lamar's long term deal absolute priority. Like, nothing else matters until he's locked for 5-6 years.
Well you can't sign him after 2019, because the CBA doesn't allow it.

You can sign him after 2020, and if the player showed any interest in that whatsoever, or maybe hired an agent, he'd probably have a deal.

So far Lamar has fucked around. So far, Lamar is finding out.

If this is true, would an agent even matter at that point?
Agent wouldn't have let it get to this point. He'd have signed before Watson.
Agent would have also known months ago that teams weren't going to meet his demands, and advised his client to revise them. Or just make $32M this year and be pissed about it.

So it turns out those restructures just barely put them under the cap. Im not sure how that math adds up but that’s what the Bucs cap guy is reporting…. While i think it’s really unlikely they could make a play for Lamar we can’t match, this ownership has been kicking the can to win at all cost. Even in the worst cap situation in the NFL they seem determined to stay with that plan.

What if his plans all along were to play out his last year

Maybe. It might not be his last year though. Tag still an option next year.

If that's his plans, so be it. It'll be impossible for him to recover the $ he lost. If he plays out all two tag years, he'll have made ~$95M over three years (from '22-'24).

Josh Allen is in the same draft class. He's going to make a minimum of $143.1M in his career through '24. If Lamar plays this out, he'll have made ~$105.2M through '24.

Pretty gigantic delta there. Even if I discount $8M because Allen was higher draft pick and thus his rookie contract was slated higher, Lamar's about $30M in lifetime earnings behind a player from the same draft class who one could argue should be "comparable" in terms of compensation.

There's no contract he can sign that's going to catch up him to that. It's highly unlikely he'll get $60M a year two years from now. And if he does, all the other guys behind him, including Allen, will get raises too.

If its a product of "he just wants out of Baltimore", then so be it. Man up, say that, and let the Ravens trade you for the best they can get.

Chuck Smith seems like an interesting hire...

Smith fills the vacancy created after Rob Leonard left to become the defensive line coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.

Smith, a former NFL defensive end (1992-2000) is an outside-the-box hire as a coach who comes from a non-traditional coaching background. He has spent more than 20 years developing and operating a pass rush training program used by many professional and collegiate players and coaches.

Smith, who has gone by the nickname "Dr. Rush," has regularly worked with draft eligible prospects and served as a training camp consultant for several NFL teams, including the Ravens in 2008.

I just don't really like where a Lamar being paid $32M on the tag could lead. He has little leverage not to play, but if any of that shit about him not wanting to play down the stretch due to the chance of further injury and his future pay has any credence, then I'd be worried he'd pull the same shit this year with any injury. And if other teams feel this way, it would certainly hamper our ability to trade him.

I mean, I think he has to concede he made a big mistake in how this has all gone and just knuckle under and play. But since nothing in this whole ordeal has really gone in any normal way since the beginning, I fully expect a whole lot more bullshit than I do a sudden deal. I also can't imagine where a second tag year is something either side could manage. It just looks like how a messy divorce plays out.

This Chuck Smith hire makes absolutely no sense. Did Harbaugh and Smith both shop at Whole Foods or something. There has to be a connection someplace...right????

I mean, the guy is known for coaching up pass rushers and ours have underperformed (aside from Houston but he obviously doesn't need any extra coaching). Why not get him to help our pass rush?

Curious as to why you feel like this hiring is underwhelming? He’s much in the same light as Coach Dubb although steps into a position coach role instead of a specialist.
I’m assuming he was held in a high regard around the players and probably more specifically Campbell and Houston since they both worked with him before. I’m sure the FO got their opinion on him and spoke highly of him.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a great hire. Just want to know what the connection is is all.

I believe people are misunderstanding my comment. I absolutely love the hire.
