The 2023 Offseason Thread

Sure but he would have left it at 'i'm sure we'll get the deal worked out' rather than sending signals with 'we'll do what's best for the team' thing before they even sat at the table again.
Well keep in mind that the very first thing EDC said when the discussions were brought up is "it takes two to tango". When you have somebody who voluntarily decides he's not going to negotiate for like 1/3 of the available negotiating window, that means things will typically take longer.

Ok so what is the reasonable timeline to hear names getting interviewed? Timeline for actually signing the OC?

Is it even possible for Lamar to sign first?

was only 6 days between wink's announced departure and macdonald's hiring
but we interviewed tons of guys in that week to get to that point and idk that it would have been that quick if macdonald hadnt always been thought of as being the heir apparent at DC...

also possible that if we're looking at OC candidates that are involved late in the post-season that it might have to wait until after they're eliminated (or win) to actually hire them...

so unless lamar and the ravens are much closer in negotiations than we thought, the OC is going to be here very much before any potential lamar extension

there are ways to bargain shop
and if Lamar signs, you can spend a little extra to get a guy you like in free agency (just probably cant shell out for a top top guy... nor would we probably want to get involved in that over-inflated market)

but ive learned to trust EDC when he tells us what his priority is
There are always "creative" ways to spend money on what you want. Cats tickle me when they say, "we can't afford to do this or that" and then out of nowhere; a surprising deal is made out from under our noses. The news of Roman's exit and the information that Harbaugh and EDC shared concerning their priority to get a long-term deal done for Lamar (and acknowledging that he is special and that he is our QB and that they want to put a better-receiving core around him and to have him more involved in the offense) was promising. Gave me hope that the FO has seen the error of their "archaic" mindsets in reference to competing in the AFC North Division and the NFL as a whole with these more prolific passing offenses.

What I got out of the conference is that they want to sign Lamar long term but realize they will probably have to put the tag on him and that will limit who we can sign unless we can do some restructuring. There is going to be a lot of our free agents rolling out.

Yeah that makes some sense. They must have a shortlist and I'd assume we'd start hearing names soon

Harbs needs to do PR a little better but is a good coach. He needs to quickly find the right guy to be OC and do the things necessary to build the team's new offensive identity. He's in a much more fortunate position with respect to injuries this year so he should be in a good spot.

MM has a talented squad and a whole year under his belt. He'll be thinking of all of those blown leads all offseason. He needs to grow into his role and put up a top 5 defense with a killer identity.

The OC should realistically also be in a good spot. They have a lot of film to watch. They need to understand Lamar, they need to intimately understand some of Greg's run game concepts. They need to understand our personnel. Obviously also need to bring together a sophisticated passing game which can compliment.

EDC is the lynchpin. Get Lamar signed, overhaul the WR room, add to the CB room, and fill out the backend of the roster.

As a fun little game, does anyone think the OC could be a wild name that no one even has on their radar?

I think we've seen that Harbs really likes OCs who have previously been HCs. Trestman, Marty, Cameron, Caldwell. I think Roman was actually the first guy to not have HC experience actually.

Makes me think Reich might be his guy. And he's available right now. Just my hunch

Just a push notification, did Harbaugh say 200% chance Lamar is a Raven?
I didn’t hear that but there was a couple of minutes that I missed. Him and EDC were both talking about him being a Raven this year but I don’t think either is even 100% certain. The way EDC talked I would still put it at 50/50.

I just went back and listened to the first part of presser (actually the part I missed) and there was a question from Hensley to Both EDC and Harbaugh about a comment they had made a year ago. Essentially whether they still feel the same about wanting Lamar as their QB for the future. Harbs comment was 100% 200% yes. It was not that he is 200% certain he will be here.

Yeah, Reich's a devoted christian, too - big plus in John's eyes.

Don’t know but Harbs thinks candidates will be lining up for this job. That of course is assuming they get Lamar signed.
