We don't need all those positions from the draft.
- It's a good and deep FA corner year, and we already have a few disappointing recent draft picks in the CB room. (It's been EDC's least successful position- Iman Marshall, Brandon Stephens, Shaun Wade, Armour-Davis, Pepe Williams. ) I would like to draft one CB but not 'multiple'.
- The O Line is in pretty good shape. I believe in drafting one every year if possible, but we need one late rounder, just to keep the pipeline going, not 'some'. I'd say the interior D Line is a greater need, with Calais likely leaving.
- A RB would be nice, if the value is there, but I wouldn't let RB stop me from drafting WR, which is clearly a position of greater need, and a position that's much more expensive to fill via Free Agency.
My ideal draft would be WR x2, CB, DL and either a RB or a Guard, depending on value.
Agreed it doesn't have to come from the draft, BUT, the caveat being that with Lamar playing on the exclusive tag, cap space will be at premium. Meaning there aren't many options to getting those positions other than the draft. You can get cheap veterans, but there's not likely to be a Zeitler or Williams-level signing. Its unlikely the cap space will be there to do that.
In terms of how I view the positions:
1. Corner. At the moment, you basically have Marlon, Stephens, Pepe and JAG. Most people don't expect Peters to be back. So it really comes down to how comfortable are you with that group and lack of obvious depth it creates.
Additionally, Hamilton played mostly SCB last season. I'm not sure that will continue, given that its highly likely Clark isn't back. So realistically, you'll need at least one Starter, plus some depth. At present, you're a Marlon Humphrey injury away from having a pretty bad Corner group.
I think Corner is clearly the #2 priority of the offseason.
2. Interior Oline I'm sneaky worried about. I think everybody expect Powers to be gone, which means you're rolling with either Cleveland at LG or an acquired person (either via FA or the draft). Also feels like we're lacking in depth there, and Zeitler is a possible cap casualty also.
3. Interior Dline is OK I think. You'll have Madubuike, Travis Jones and probably get back Michael Pierce, assuming they keep him. Will need to add a couple guys, but I don't think you need world-beaters.
4. RB I have concerns with also. Highly suspect Edwards is getting cut, and everybody else is literally a FA. So you have nothing behind Dobbins, who's also a UFA after the season. I really wouldn't want to go the FA route for that, so most likely you're looking at a day 3 pick. Waiting until the 6th or 7th round may not work either.
I have no issue with the positional selection in the draft. Only that without a 2nd round pick, you're either getting your WR or CB in the 3rd round. I think if we wait until the 3rd round to get a WR, there will be a mutiny, and historically I think CB play tends to fall off significantly after day 2, so I'd rather see us get something higher.
That's also putting a lot of eggs in the "we're going to upgrade our interior D/Olines, and RB position, exclusively from day 3 selections.
Obviously there will be some cheap veterans to help fill the gaps, but I think its a good example of why the expectations of us adding like 4-5 receivers in the offseason isn't realistic.
