The 2023 Offseason Thread

Ugh that sucks. Queen and Ro were such a great tandem. If we get Lamar back on the long term deal and have wiggle room to add valuable FA, then I hope Queen stays. Even if we lose him for a 3rd round comp vs a 2nd round trade.
If you trade queen you do it on draft day and use him in a trade package to move up into the second round

I’d rather hold onto him than at a 2nd rounder. Quality LB play really turned this defense around

It did, but I think the Roquan effect has been slightly exaggerated. He's really good, but his arrival also coincided with players returning and MacDonald getting used to his roster and vice versa.

JPP and Bowser, Peters coming back, Hamilton moving to the slot etc all helped the defense, but Roquan was the big splash move so all the credit for everything was heaped onto his shoulders.

Queens play also greatly improved this year as well. I’m not going to be that upset if we get rid of him, it’s a numbers game , but people gotta stop pretending like it’s a low value position. Quality LBs make a huge difference

Actually think Lamar's situation will dictate what happens there.

If they sign Lamar to extension before FA, or possibly into April, then I think they'll keep him and try to make a run at it this year. Ideally, Lamar signs before FA opens, we can be mild spenders in FA, and then we don't need a lot additional draft picks.

But if Lamar isn't signed by the draft, my gut says we'll be spending later in FA, in the low priced market, and will absolutely need draft picks to add depth and make upgrades. And that means trades. I think they'll get somebody to give us a late rounder for Clark, but if they're looking to get another mid rounder in the draft, I think they'd trade Queen for a 3rd or 4th rounder.

What's advantageous for Ravens is they don't have to max decision on 5th year option until May 1, so just after the draft. If they pick up his option, I think its a sign they want to keep him this year. If they decline his option, I think they'll likely look for a trade.

For me, its a wider comparison, but its Grubbs vs Yanda. Could have probably made a case for either, but you're never paying market value to both at the same time. We chose Yanda, Grubbs had a great career elsewhere.

We decided we liked Roquan better. I think Roquan is >>> Queen, whereas Grubbs and Yanda were closer in skill/talent, but still. Queen's price tag also figures to be considerably less than Roquan's.

Regardless, keeping both is a major roster blunder.

If Lamar leaves, Queen stays, and vice versa. I do kinda hope we could get a first for him, but that isn't very likely.
No way could we get a 1 for queen, and even if Lamar is traded, I’d rather save that cap space than pay it to 2 ILBs. If we have to trade Lamar, then we have to look at queen as part of Lamar’s ravens and he now has to be used to help build the next iteration of the ravens, where we allocate more resources to higher value positions like wr and edge rusher

I was saying i wanted too. A man can hope, right?

Could get a 2nd from a team, or use him to jump up in the first if there's someone we really want.
I mean I don't know you get a 2 for Queen. Roquan was traded for a 2, and he's a better linebacker than Queen. MAYBE teams think Queen will be cheaper, but I'm not sure he's like tremendously cheaper.

I'd be thinking a 3rd or 4th rounder, with maybe a late round sweetener.

yes, but Queen has a year remaining on his contract and 5th year option, whereas RS had half a year remaining until he was a free agent. I think we get a 2nd rounder for him if he is traded.

Maybe. 5th year option pays him pretty close to market value I think though, so that team really isn't getting much of a "deal" there.
Also that would depend on when we trade him. If we trade him after May, we may have already decided not to pick up his option, making him a UFA next year anyway.

5th year option for a linebacker is actually much less than market value, so I'm going to have to disagree with you here.

Agree on your 2nd statement

I mean what do you think Queen gets on the open market? His 5th year option I posted earlier, but I believe its ~$12.5M.
Queen's not getting close to what Roquan got. My guess would be $15-16M a year would be the high side. I think $12-13M is a pretty good spot for him on the open market.
