2023 Forum Mock: Discussion Thread

Didn't have much hope at QB for the Saints with my cap issues, so figured I'd take a shot on a young guy that showed some promise in the league already. I like Zappe much better than most of the QBs in this year's draft, so thug lifing this shit.

FA bidding question:
The Rules state that you cannot bid on a FA without available Cap Space.
@Truth 's Chiefs upped my bid on a player to 15 Stars, 1 Star more than their currently available Stars of 14. While I understand the Rule of 51, I also understood the Bidding Rule to state that if you for example currently have 27 Stars available, you cannot bid any more than those currently available to you, which in this case would be 27, because we are not allowed to go into negative cap space even by a fraction of a second. Is that correct?

You can go over per the rule of 51. Effective cap space is 1 star over (previously 0.5) and we’ve operated that way for years now

The above post encapsulates it. But the addition of any player pushes the last contract out of the 51. Given its automation, it's a simultaneous event. So it wouldn't require going into negative cap space because the newly signed player immediately creates another active contract.

Just to illustrate further... if I had 5 stars of cap space, I could technically still sign 5 guys for 2 stars each if I wanted. For each guy I sign, a 1 star player drops off of my cap per the rule of 51.

Thanks for clarifying. I was under the impression that you could only bid what the SoF spits out to stay above the cap

I can't blame you at all. That one can seem tricky on the surface. If there was a required process with a reapplication of the funds prior to the signings, there would definitely be a conundrum. No doubt about it. But in these instances, one in a literal sense can't exist without the other, so you couldn't have the savings of an additional contract without the additional contract. So if it weren't permitted, for example, teams at the cap mark wouldn't even be permitted to sign a single UDFA. If that makes any sense.

Heads up that I’ll be out of town for a quick trip this weekend. Might be slow on confirming winners and updating the FA spreadsheet, but doesn’t look like there will be too much action before we open up phase 2 on Sunday.

Just checking back in tonight and it looks like all bids thus far have been settled in phase 1. Phase 2 begins tomorrow night at 7pm EST. Last call for bids in phase 1 essentially

Ground rules for phase 2 tonight:

Once again, you must hold the high bid for 12 hours this round to win the player

Once this session opens, there will be no more new bids in the phase 1 thread

The minimum for phase 2 is 7 stars. If you get in a bidding war, the price can rise to any number.

No quoting winners this time. I will be deleting posts if you do so. Will indicate a win by a like. Just trying to keep the thread clean for bidding.

I think you mean no more new bids. i.e. if there was still an open bid, in phase 1 when Phase 2 opened there could still be bids bids on those open players.
