The Good, the Bad, and the Harbaugh

the best offences in the league use the passing game to set up the run not the other way around - their good running games are a byproduct of defences not being able to clamp down on the running game
Unless you're the Rams. Then everything runs through your RB.

even then - conceptually they play the game to create mismatches in the passing game which allows gurley to take games over both as a pass catcher and as a runner

gurley is featured but the rams dont base their offence off the run

He was nothing more than a decoy for a run on the play.
I don't care what you want to call him; if he is that wide open (literally every single defender ran AWAY from him), you throw that football to the man.

It is a little disappointing that Joe didn't recognize the entire defense was flowing to the left and think, "Hey, maybe Lamar is open," but are we really surprised?

I mean, going into this game, Gurley had 169 rushes to Goff's 171 passes. I'm not necessarily saying they're a run first team, but the team definitely runs through Gurley.

It does. Gurley is just their best option as both a runner and is likely the best receiving back in the game at the moment. Goff is a good QB but without Gurley that team falls apart.

Certain teams just maintain certain identities. The Rams always have good RBs, we usually have good ILBs, etc etc.

Browns are always trash.

Pretty much every successful team has at the least a good run game.

Its also kind of a "well the Rams are always ahead and when ahead you run more" but I Gurley is definitely a key that offense which is either run the ball or throw it 20 yards and you can't defend both.

Sometimes true, but generally one doesn’t exist without the other.

Not even a little surprised. If option #1 isn’t open play is almost a guaranteed fail. Always has been the case and always will.

I thought wink abandoned that approach. We were aggressive earlier this season but press coverage has gone back to pussy coverage.
Stay tuned for my series on coverages to understand why what you call soft coverage may not actually be "soft coverage"

im not gonna lie our offence looked most dangerous with lamar under centre even for however few plays it was and even with basically only 10 players on the field
Our run game is dead in the water unless Lamar is in and offers a threat to run. Like to know what our average run play gets when Lamar is in vs. Flacco.

When it’s third and 4 you can’t give a receiver free run without at least a bump.

The good: Smith keeping Brown in check. Andrews looking damn good for a rookie TE and Brown looks like he’ll develop into a mauler
The bad: Never being able to get the defense off the field
The ugly: Despite the bad we win if the offense doesn’t suck. But they do.
