Once again, how he got those decent numbers matters. He was playing during garbage time a lot, and he played vs. weaker, shitty nfl teams. Not to mention he played in a very QB friendly offense with a OC who is notorious for making the QB's life a lot easier. And he still wasn't that good! If he were to try and play in Kansas City's offense, he'd fail miserably and actually be a massive liability to the team, moreso than Alex Smith currently is. Teams have figured out Colin Kaepernick in a pro offense. He's predictable with poor mechanics, poor accuracy, and poor decision making. He ain't starter material, and he's already stated that he wants too much money to be a backup.
And it's not that simple. (No pun intended) Most situations in the world are not black or white like the media, and so many others suggest. If you really think that Kaepernick,a bad quarterback, singlehandedly brought the league to his knees, then I have no idea what the tell you.
Firstly, sure some teams in the NFL will avoid him for the marketing disaster. But Kaepernick plays the most valuable position in the entire sport. Cam Newton does the same exact thing, Panthers cut him, and five minutes later he's playing for the Cleveland Browns. Why? Because Cam Newton has talent and certain teams are SO desperate they are willing to undergo scrutiny to win games, which is ultimately the biggest money draw in the NFL. It's the biggest draw for two reasons. 1. You get more free advertisement by networks such as ESPN whether they like or hate you, and more people tune in to try to watch your games, OR your fanbase grows slightly. 2. The team can then charge higher prices for tickets and the local fans will still go. Unless Kaepernick was a criminal the NFL wouldn't lose much of it's advertising, as it's marketable players would still be good for commercials, etc etc.
Secondly, the NFL's image has been under attack.. Or rather, they've been shooting themselves in the foot. Once again
Kaepernick clearly plays a role here. But he's not the sole reason for this problem. I've met several dozens of fans who have a problem with the NFL's harsh crackdown on substances like medicinal marijuana(hell, even I think it should be legal). People have also had a problem with how lax the NFL has been with NFL players who have committed horrible crimes like domestic assault, sexual abuse, child abuse. But the NFL doesn't blacklist players who have done so much worse than Kaepernick even though they honestly should. And if you don't think that NFL teams have gotten scrutiny for taking on players with unbelievable baggage, think again. Joe Mixon was just drafted. Adrian Peterson kept his job. Josh Brown remained on the team a lot longer than he should have despite confessing to doing what he did. Tyreek Hill is still heavily marketed in Kansas City despite pleading
guilty to domestic assault. Almost all of these situations caused massive outrage in the NFL community, with several fans threatening to boycott the league(and presumably several others who actually did). Yet, all of these idiots(except for Brown really) are still employed by their original teams, or didn't last on the market. Adrian Peterson is
old and washed up with heavy baggage for child abuse. Yet he was signed by the Saints because he has a good amount of value, and he's massively marketable. These problems have
clearly contributed to the league's ratings decline over the past few seasons.
Thirdly, as mentioned by
@Inqui earlier most professional sports league are experiencing a decline in ratings, even those outside of the United States. You mean to tell me that Colin Kaepernick has gone global? If you were to say Colin Kaepernick's name in the United Kingdom, only a select group of people(some tourists from the United States and those in the UK who watch the NFL) would know who the hell your talking about. He's not really a global name, and I highly doubt that Kaepernick has contributed to the decline in the NBA's, MLB's, Golf's, Hockey's ratings. There are probably several factors at play
