because it's about exerting power not really about the wall at all - the wall is the symbol of his campaign and his presidency - but its about the rise of authoritarian-type philosophies of leadership

part of me thinks he wants to crush the democrats by holding out because he has no empathy or sympathy for the government workers etc. who can no longer feed themselves or everything shutting down - he's hoping that the dems cant hold out that long because they cant let people suffer

and mcconnell is aiding him the whole way by not even letting bipartisan bills to reopen government even get on the floor

the problem for them from a public standpoint is that Nancy Pelosi has cleverly got ahead of the potential media battle and clearly positioned the democrats and the house of representatives as being willing and ready to open the government

i understand the tactic he's employing and i think it's crucial to democracy that it doesn't work
Both parties are showing their ass during the government shutdown. I do think border security is a important issue but Trump wanting money for a wall is ridiculous when there are far better ways to spend money for border security.

Pelosi and the Democrats are coming across as phony about there caring about the federal employees. All they want is a victory over Trump on their terms. If they truly cared they would work on negotiating a settlement.

The real blame for the shutdown falls on Congress. If they had passed the final three appropriations bills the government would not be going through this shutdown. If Congress would have passed comprehensive immigration reform we would not be talking about the wall. As is so often the case, Congress failing to act is hurting America.

Both parties need to stop playing games and
compromise so we can put an end to this shutdown.

No doubt. One of the better governors we had in a minute.

Even if Trump doesn't get the wall, I'm fairly sure he'll win the nomination again. It would be nice to see Hogan get a shot at the presidency though.
I don't even know if Hogan officially challenged him or not. I mean, from the Dem side, you got Harris, Warren (LMAO), Gillibrand, Castro (would ppl vote for a Castro in this country?), and a few others. I honestly haven't heard of anyone so far who's officially challenging Trump for the GOP so far.

So if anyone wants my 2 cents, since I work for the US Senate, please PM me asking. I can give you the real scoop. Though @Somerset Ravens isn't too far away from what's actually the problem. I don't want to risk my job but I will give my two cents if asked nicely.

Something that I've learned working here is that the mainstream media is utterly toxic(moreso than I thought), and that a civics course in politics should be a requirement in general education. Stop spewing your BS narrative and report news.

Mainstream media (most of it) have stopped reporting news long, long time ago, not only in America. They turned into news manufacturing or news blocking/censoring services and the most influential lobbying outlets. Why people still pay attention to what they have to say is beyond me.

I don’t usually comment here because I despise partisan politics and the contrived debate that accompanies it, but I heard a narrative on the radio while riding to work one day recently that’s worth sharing.

A GOP congressman from Virginia(missed his name) was being interviewed and mentiond a bill that he and a couple of others had sponsored sometime last year. The bill basically states that if Congress fails to pass budget legislation by August 31 of any given year Congressional members and their staffs do not get paid until it gets done. As is true in many walks of life, get into their pockets and you will force action. Of course this bill will never pass but you have to applaud the thought from a few politicians that at least sound like their heads are in the right place.

As has been mentioned the shutdown is the fault of Congress as a whole and the rhetoric from both parties trying to blame the other is nothing more than a sad pissing contest that exemplifies partisan politics. Stop defending party platform and do your effing jobs.

Not only that but we need some type of term limits on the House and Senate but of course that would never pass. Also term limits on Supreme Court justices. They should not be lifetime appointments.

I couldn’t agree more! As soon as they are in for any length of time they no longer work for the people, they work for special interest groups.

there are reasons why the judiciary should be life-time appointments but in this current political climate where there's no such thing as a non-partisan appointment i almost completely agree with you

Brexit aside (which doesn't really reflect the system), the Westminster systems have really proven themselves over the past few years. Over here a card-carrying member of a party wouldn't even be considered for a judicial appointment, and it would be hard to even become a lawyer.

The civil service can just get on with their jobs too. No partisan shutdowns unless the government is all kinds of incompetent. There's no big turnover at every election (and no lame duck departments) because they're simply expected to do the work the responsible minister requires.

I'd also like to add that former politicians shouldn't become lobbyists either. And really a polticians salary really isn't that much so how do they become so rich?

for 3 weeks lol

Oh that's mountains of time lol.

So this man Roger Stone had the FBI used SWAT, military equipment, and some other shit to arrest him before the crack of dawn only for him to to be released walking out like he's some sort of gangster.

Through the air huh. I'll tell you right now I don't believe that for a second. Now tell me how you feel about 90% of the heroin coming across the border along with fentanyl that comes along with it. How do you feel about drug cartels making shitloads of money from this? Do you know how much money is spent to combat herion use/treatment. How bout human smuggling operations (coyotes) taking these poor peoples monies with false promises and a lot of times leaving them to die in the desert? Are you ok with all this or is this an overconcern. Have you not heard anything from the Border Patrol who want walls. If you don't think walls work ask Jim Acosta lol.

What should be asked is is why do the Dems want to leave the border open? They supported the Secure Fence Act in 2006 and this includes Obama,Schumer and Pelosi all voting for this and I could show you all kinds of clips of all three saying how bad illegal immigration is and how we need border security aka fencing/walls. What changed?

I really don't care about Rep or Dems. I really want to know how you feel about the data provided to you. These politicians will change their tune up in a heartbeat. I really do not put much stock in anything any of them say.

I'm not talking about Dems or Repubs. Politifact will tell you most heroin and fentanyl come across the southern border and that's left leaning. Its a fact.

Its also getting to the point that U.S citizenship doesn't matter.

Take for example the incident with the teens wearing MAGA hats and the Native American. Media reported the teens caused an incident then soon after the real video came out that showed the complete opposite happened. The media has really become all about hating Trump, and attacking him any chance they get facts be damned. They saw it as a way to make Trump look bad(even though Trump does that to himself already).

The Democratic party can try hard but I honestly do not see anyone who is rumored to be running in 2020 that can take him down. Plus I think a lot of people have woken up to their BS and probably will vote Trump again. I'm afraid the Democrats will have to wait until 2024 unless they get a serious candidate who poses a real threat to Trump. So probably another 5 years of the media attacking everything Trump does, 5 more years of late night comedians and Saturday Night Live making fun of Trump, etc.

If the Dems put a personable moderate on the table or even just Joe Biden, they will crush Trump to no end.

I can't tell you too much, but don't listen to the BS the media is going to spew. The GOP loathes, sans a couple of sadly key people(McConnell, Cruz, etc) when they aren't playing the political game just fucking hates the guy. As does most of the country

But certain candidates will ensure a Trump reelection in 2020 if the Dems are dumb enough to put them there

Kamala Harris would have california but the rest of the country views her as hilariously extreme and the silent majority rust belt would roll there eyes at the identity politics.

Elizabeth Warren has no chance in hell, she's a worse version of Hillary Clinton and totally lacks the personality to get elected.

Corey Booker would actually make for a decent president in my opinion but Trump would have too much ammo with all of his antics on the Senate floor.

Bernie would have a chance but ultimately the majority of the country identifies as moderate. The more they'd dig into the socialism he preaches the more they'd push away. The young people, the one he panders to the most, NEVER makes it to the polls even for candiadates they loved like Obama. Not to mention, several Americans would be concerned about his age(I disagree with Bernie on a lot, but he's actually a really nice guy for what it's worth).

Biden would kick any of their asses, and probably slaughter Trump. He's probably going to be the nominee in 2020 if he decides to run.

You don’t think the whole pedophile thing would hurt Biden. He does have a lot of skeletons in his closet. I think a lot of that stuff would come out. Personally, I think a guy like Beto O’Roarke would give Trump the most problems.
