Can we all at least agree that Betsy DeVos is a pretty deplorable human being?
Absolutely deplorable and idiotic.

And, how can you appoint someone who has never taught to be Secretary of Education? That's like putting me in charge of running an auto shop because I know how to read a manual. Nothing about DeVos makes any sense at all -- her or her appointment.

Ideology aside, she just isn't qualified. I can support a conservative appointment if the pick is qualified. But few of Trump's picks are. She's definitely not one of them.

I would be hesitant to say "many" ( the word is subjective anyway )
I don't think it is even remotely close to 50% of the population are blatantly FOR racism. I don't even think I would believe 25% of the U.S. population is *blaintiantly FOR racism*
I don't just mean racism toward blacks. I mean toward Mexicans, Asians, and even whites when talking about other races. I'd imagine if you traveled tot he deep south and areas that border Mexico, this would be a very different narrative.

The hearings are absolutely disgusting. On the topic of racism, she'd be one I'd question to be a racist and an elitist who only cares for the rich whites of the world.

Trump has the least educated cabinet of any recent president. Say what you will about Obama, but he surrounded himself with Nobel Prize winners, PhD grads, and the top of the top educationally. Trump? Well, I read about it in elementary school once.

I fail to see the connections between these statements and her being a deplorable human being.

You did see I said US population right?

This is all in relation to the US population still....

Go to the deep south (Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana Mississippi, etc) and I guarantee racism is very alive there. As of the 2012 election, voting centers STILL had to have federal officials monitor them for fear of people of color not being allowed to vote. I guarantee you'll find a very large population of racists in those states.

I dated a girl with family in NC and currently am dating a girl from WV and the first had extremely racist family members in NC, which was not uncommon at all in the town they were from. The girl I'm currently dating has unfriended most of the people she knows from WV because they're all racist and she can't take it anymore. That's WV and NC. Imagine what it's like in the deep south where it was extremely rampant 50 years ago.

Go to states like NM, TX, AZ, or any of the states closely bordering Mexico. You don't think you'll find racists toward Mexicans in pretty big numbers?

I have two older adopted brothers who are Asian. When we lived in Baltimore, they and their other friends of Asian origin faced constant racism in their high school. Constant heckling, physical threats, refusal to talk to them, stealing, etc.

I think it's really easy for people to forget that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed just 53 years ago and so many more policies had to be enacted still by Lyndon B Johnson and by Congress when Reagan was president because he wouldn't sign most of them. That's ~35 years ago that even more protections had to be afforded to people of color because of racist feelings and it wasn't even 60 years ago that we were having the Civil Rights Movement.

Yeah, not a large amount of the population is racist. I'm sure most of it just disappeared and isn't a thing even those these were still issues facing the population 35 years ago. Nah, none of those people are still living.

I think it is EXTREMELY easy to say that these problems aren't a big deal or aren't really happening when we don't face it. I'm an educated white male who lives in a very white city in a very nice neighborhood (I moved from Baltimore). I'm never going to face racism where I am. But that does not mean in any way, shape, or form that I should think it isn't an issue for many people.

She was asked point blank that being the backboard for education if there was a school that did not accept LGBTQ students and wanted federal funding (actual school in Indiana like this), would she tell that school that they need to accept LGBTQ students before they receive federal funding? Refused to say yes, she would refuse funding until then. Was asked if it was African Americans they refused, would she say they could not receive federal funding? Refused to agree to deny federal funding.

You do understand the point is she wants the states to make the decision. Not the federal govt.

If they are requesting federal funding, she is the one that needs to step up.

The fedral funding goes to the states and they distribute it. Federal funding only accounts for only a small portion of the actual funding that goes to the schools. Its mostly state money thru taxes and whatnot that fund schools plus local govt money and sometimes thru private funds that donate.

I am unclear what debate or argument is taking place here. Or if there even is one.

I don't think any right thinking person would ever say there is no racisim anywhere. Just the same as I don't think any right thinking person would ever say that the majoroty of the US is * blatantly racist *.
It would completely stand to reason that pockets of more intense racism would exist in certain areas based on who is there.

Just been lurking in here reading the different viewpoints without commenting as I'm aligned with the "What Makes Sense" party. Unfortunately I haven't had much of anyone or anything to support for quite some time. lol

I have to say that as much of an ass Trump is, he is a master manager and understands that to make a program or department successful you need excellence at the top organizing and making the managerial decisions. Of course the SMEs are an integral part of the team, but those folks don't necessarily make the best leaders or managers and may not be the ones who can get things done.
