The Lamar, the Receivers, and the Pass Defence

Also gotta give a shout out to Monken today. He wasn't stubborn when the gameplan wasn't working. Running was tough and they left the downfield passing game open... so we took advantage. When they let off to get back to covering the back end, we started throwing the run game in again.

Lamar being a genie helps, but it was a good coaching effort offensively.

I also hope this is another step toward using Zay as an actual WR instead of a gadget guy.

For Stephens in particular, it feels like they've found the recipe against him this year. He's going to be sticky in coverage, but he has always struggled with turning his head and finding the ball. Why not throw it at him and trust your guys to make a play, especially when he's matched up with WR1?

I don't know. As I said before, I hate to pin it on one guy, but Marcus Williams has been so dreadful in 4 out of 5 games that I'm not sure he's not a solution. Ar'Darius drops some size but he's so much more instinctual that I'd consider giving him a lot more traditional S run once Maulet is back.

over the course of the year im not worried about stephens
he's a CB2 and he's perfectly good at it - only the elite guys have done anything to him and it's basically all been on fades

id need the all-22 to make a judgement on williams - the first impression from this game is pretty awful but the all-22 has been much kinder to him in other games this year, even when the MoF has been open and the initial thoughts are that he's not been good

Yeah I think he's taken a step back, but he's lower on my list of concerns. Of the starters at CB, Wiggins is clearly the biggest issue right now. He has his moments but he's definitely going through the learning process of not being the best guy on the field anymore. Seems he's going to have to realize that his speed isn't going to save him all the time like it did in college. Needs to get his hands on guys.

I turned it off at halftime, I couldn’t stomach what I was watching, but prior to today I know Stephens has been glued to receivers all year long, and guys are just making great catches against him. It sucks that it keeps happening but shit man he’s not cb1 elite and you got wr1 elites making great catches against him every week. Can’t even be mad at the guy

on the iosivas deep shot it's hard to see on the highlight replay (they go off the screen in the broadcast view) but it seems like nate might have been caught peeking at the QB when he lost him
 
It's not always going to be perfect, and even in his best games, there are going to be moments that make you scratch your head. But I hope people take advantage and enjoy getting to watch Lamar Jackson be the QB of this team while we're lucky enough to have him. We have arguably the most dynamic player in NFL history. Not many guys are going to pick up a fumble, stiff arm a DE twice, and throw a TD while running toward the sideline. He's special and I hope people don't get caught up in the idea of what a QB "should be" and instead value the fact that we get to watch greatness week in and week out. It's sad what social media has done.

I think there's a few issues with the pass defense.

1. Even dating to last year, I thought there was inconsistent tackling. This seems to be heightened last year.
2. The Ravens don't seem to be as confident or aware of their responsibilities in zone coverage. They don't seem to always be aware of who they're passing a receiver off to or have the awareness of when to pass off. So many miscommunication.
3. Think the Ravens aren't getting great safety play from Marcus Williams or Eddie Jackson as two deep safeties.
4. I haven't seen Kyle Hamilton used in the same role, really. In 2023, he was the one covering tight ends and big slot receivers. Now, that seems to be a role taken on by Malik Harrison and Roquan.
5. I think opposing teams are really good at abusing favorable match ups and the Ravens aren't good at adjusting. In week 1, it was Rashee Rice when he was in the slot against Roquan/Harrison. Week 2, it was Adams with Stephens on him. Week 3, it's Lamb with Wiggins on him. Week 4, it's... no, they played this one pretty well. Week 5, it's Stephens in man against Chase/Higgins.

I will also add- Roquan just looks sluggish in coverage. I'd have to see his usage from 2023 to compare, but he just seems so out of sorts, which is concerning considering the contract he landed.

The danger with Lamar is that he so frequently does stuff that is completely insane that sometimes the other exceptional stuff he does starts to seem routine and you dont appreciate it the way you should in the moment

WR talent is the difference. Our secondary has been cooked by Rashee Rice, Davante Adams, Ceedee Lamb, and then Higgins and Chase. Bills don't have anyone of that caliber (Coleman whos their traitsy-ist guy mossed Stephens twice in the way we saw Adams do.

And that should tell you something. Because we have a stacked secondary. It means we're calling the defense in a way that allows the guys on the other side of the ball to beat you with technique. And the hilarious part is antithetical to what's supposed to happen. Orr is the number one DC caller of Dime defense. How is it that you're worst in the league on passing defense when you have a stacked roster of DBs and you're putting 6 on the field constantly.
