The Lamar, The Receivers, and The Pass Defence

The safeties are definitely having a really hard time with their assignments.

However…

The scheme is what has Brandon Stephens overmatched against high end WRs so often. He can stick to guys, but elite catchers with crazy body control make catches on him, and offenses are isolating their elite catchers wherever Stephens is covering, and throwing that way, and it’s working over and over again.

That is a scheme adjustment that needs to be made. When we face one of these receivers we gotta find a way to get Stephens out of that isolation and against guys that won’t keep victimizing him like this. When the offensive design becomes “get Stephens 1v1 with WR1 and throw the ball” and it works every time, you gotta make an adjustment.

All season I’ve been saying Stephens is playing the catch point very well it’s just been bad luck, but at this point idk man, doesn’t seem like he’s just gonna suddenly have his luck swing the other way.

idk that teams have had that much success vs him in those scenarios

Adams had a field day for sure
but he gave up 1 against McLaurin but i dont think any other dude has killed Stephens on those fades the way Adams did

So my question would be, why can’t we kick Humphrey outside, let Hamilton play nickel, and have Trenton Simpson out there with ro? You get your 5 best DBs on the field and you keep your literal best player in his best position where he impacts the game more than any defender on our team. Are they protecting Trenton Simpson? I haven’t seen him struggle in coverage, in fact I’ve seen him make plays in coverage and it almost appears to me that he’d be an ideal backer for nickel, he’s got range to cover, he’s got length, and really strong pass rush ability from off-the-ball.

This is just fucking with the program, it was supposed to be an extension of what we got from Macdonald but this one aspect feels like a big blunder to me.

Switch from cover 1 to cover 2-man. Man corners with shells, you can vary the front seven to cover under or pass rush however you want, but it will leave you a lot less exposed like when Wiggins got the PI.
Literally preach

i mean it is a misnomer that we only played cover 2 last year - the difference was we were able to make most things look like cover 2 pre-snap or we would make things look like something else and then still manage to get to cover 2 effectively

i dont mind varying the coverages at all - i think i dont like the way MW is playing and i dont like what we're doing with the front 7 underneath to create gaps in the MoF

if you kick humphrey outside you dont get your best 5 DBs on the field, that's part of the issue - you have to take out wiggins for eddie jackson - it gets even harder to work with when arthur maulet comes back and trying to get ardarius washington in the game too

i agree with you about simpson though, maybe they're just trying to ease his responsibilities as a starter to begin the year and they'll put more on his plate the rest of the year

i do think it's possible we see some big changes after the bye week in terms of personnel usage and playcalling

What a reasonable take. Especially considering if you can get Stephens on a WR2 or WR3 he probably erases them. His style is good for pretty much any not top 15 WR. But due to his inability to turn his head and really make strong plays on the ball, top WRs just have their way against him.

the not turning his head is not that big of a deal tbh - it's only an issue when the WR can test his long-speed and also play with late hands at the catch-point - CBs are taught to play man coverage that way - to play the hands of the WR at the catch-point... if you turn your head in man to look for the ball, that's when you lose the receiver on the route

But why are we not in the business of doing what the best defenses in the league are doing? There's not a position group on D we don't have the personnel to win with.

i mean tbf, the vikings defence is psychopathic with the way they're blitzing (and they're blitzing like crazy)

the texans are playing a lot of cover 1 because they've got great CB play and a great pass rush, and on that note, i do think the ravens pass rush will look better against the bucs, they were playing pretty disciplined to keep daniels in the pocket yesterday and that obviously stymies those quick pressure type moves

Yea but best cbs can anticipate when that ball is going to be thrown which allows them to get that head around in a timely manner. Im sure teams see that on tape about stepehens. At worst they will get a knock down if thrown his way, probably not even worried about an int…………..watch stephens get an int vs bucs lol

It's like people WANT Lamar to have a subpar or mid performance just so they can shit on him afterwards. It'd be more understandable if Lamar was arrogant or he was a piece of shit off the field but this is FAR from the case.

It's honestly amazing how quickly they diminish his performance any chance they get.
Most of those pricks were wrong about Lamar since the beginning. Their sick ego requires validation all the time, they can't stand being wrong.

Fuck them bitches.

Really impressed with Zay Flowers. I like when we get him the ball. Lamar was extremely accurate. I am still unsure about Andrews but he came alive and showed some life. That grab in the endzone was very nice. Lamar put some zip on it. That drop that went for an INT was annoying.

Shout out to Bateman. Seems like we finally ran some short and intermediate stuff for him which I think serves him best.

Why does reading this post make me feel like I’m reading a Dr. Seuss book? lol

Agreed. He needs to do both. As you said in different situations. He's been beat both ways this year. Outside of like 1 play for a TD vs the Raiders Marlon hasn't let anything up. It's been Stephens getting beat by the best in the league and Wiggins being a rookie.

Wiggins will get better too

I honestly think without any injuries (knock on wood) this offense has what it takes to go all the way. Which is the first time I've probably said it since Boldin, Torrey, Jacoby, Pitta. It sucks because on one hand I don't want a new guy like Hopkins to come in and ruin the chemistry these young guys are having with Lamar (like Bateman). But I'm also worried that all it takes is one tweak, one injury and it can prove to be fragile come playoff time. I don't know if there is a right answer, but I also think if someone comes they have to be a backup like OBJ was.
We need a corner or free safety

D1City55

Pro Bowler
he's not a sideline ball-winner though and he's also not dominant at the catch-point
for all his size and physicality, mark's more of a finesse guy
I think if there's some plays where you need a guy to win 1v1, then him or Likely could be the guy. I'v seen it happen, I think a boundary WR would be nice but to be honest this offense is not really built around those type of plays, we've been clamoring for that for years but it never felt like the missing piece, more then anything it's a guy with consistent production and we're getting that in Zay.

Just watched all 22 of the interception to Andrews.

100% confirmation that throw was money, Andrews separated and then immediately squared to Lamar, while Lamar was leading Andrews. When Andrews squared up he didn’t just slow down he nearly stopped, Lamar was already releasing at this point, Andrews tried to scramble to the ball and came up short.

Man coverage, Andrews played it as if it was zone. Lamar was leading away from the man defender and looking for YAC with the outside corner turning upfield with Zay, there was quite a few extra yards to pick up there in the red zone, and I wonder if the play is designed as a man beater for this reason, backs are turned to the catch and the TE is running away from the only aware defender and into green grass. Andrews was just looking to secure a catch sitting down between 2 defenders, but this wasn’t the play to do that.

Misplayed by Andrews and a simple miscommunication. Not a huge deal, just really unfortunate it ended up in the other teams hands. Certainly not a poor throw by Lamar, it was actually the best throw to make on that play, if Andrew’s pulls away from the defender instead of sitting square, that ball is caught and ran inside the 10.

Those are the throws that separate guys like Mahomes and Brady. You turn a small catch into a big run by just putting guys in a YAC position, and the play design strongly suggests that this was the idea.

Another communication issue that will improve with time.

watching the all-22 to look at the key topics for the season so far

OL:

I think Linderbaum might have had one of his worst quarters ever as a raven to start this game - had the bad snap, ended up on the ground after a quick loss, didnt get to his aim points at least twice - it did get much better but that was surprising to say the least

Faalele's run blocking is vastly improved from the start of the season - frequently running in behind him at the point of attack and he's getting seals and making movement - and omg he even did some stuff on the move and in space - saw him make blocks on pulls and in L2 multiple times...!!!

Showed improvement in his pass sets too although still having a tendency to get perpendicular to the LoS too early - can still sometimes be guilty of oversetting - but in general the processing is so much better than it was a month ago and he's so much quicker getting out of his stance - really good performance generally

generally the OL really finding it's groove in the running game - and it definitely helps that Pat Ricard is basically like an extra OL out there

RR had a few growing pains in pass pro this game - nothing obviously of concern though i think

Mekari maybe had one of his best games as a raven that i can remember

Pass coverage: all-22 stuff

EDIT: ive just seen how long all these notes are so added a TLDR at the end

KVN doesnt carry ekeler on a wheel route - shrugs off simpson when he points it out to him - marcus williams reads it early but the play's already busted by KVN

There's a play at the end of washington's first drive where MW is trying furiously to communicate with Stephens and i can't tell if it's getting through - think BSteve might have ended up carrying the wrong person in the zone coverage and vacated his zone and MW had to go cover behind him - luckily the rush got there and Daniels had no chance to hit that window before MW got there

midway through the 2nd quarter - Daniels's first TD drive
1st play: Eddie Jackson rotates to the LoS late to hide a blitzing Hamilton, but it causes some confusion between he and humphrey as to who's got who in the 2 man route combo
4th play: McLaurin "beats" BSteve on a low fade that's thrown low and away - not sure it's defendable tbh
5th play: flea-flicker screen to ekeler
final play: MW doesn't get enough depth and gets too focused on Daniels and so is late to pick up McLaurin - doesn't help that BSteve gets rubbed by Hamilton at the start of the play to create the initial separation

i do think that Roquan generally has not been getting the ideal depth on his coverage but i dont think he's been bad at all - with the way we've been playing cover 1 he's been alone in these huge spaces in the middle of the field

in general the 1st half pass coverage was good

3rd quarter, first drive they get us on an over route on the 2nd play
looking at the all-22 just looks like a really good playcall into the coverage we're running and especially because they have us in cover 2 with MW right down near the LoS having to carry a vertical that - only criticism is that the defenders didn't squeeze when there was no threat to their zones - just a good offensive playcall

2nd drive, first play they get ertz in space vs Ro for a big gainer, looks like BSteve vacates his zone

3rd drive, halfway through, they get us on an over route
again looks like another good playcall - caught us in man coverage with a bunch of crossers and with a blitz - if nate's supposed to play with that leverage and get no help to that area on a crosser then idk how you stop that play in the coverage we were in

next play, both marlo and wiggins play the screen and leave hamilton covering 2 guys so he has to stay over the top and leaves the slot fade wide open (albeit he absolutely punishes mclaurin for it)

near the end of that drive, ertz gets down to the 1 - that's a play that you just tip your cap - if that's not fired in perfectly, Ro gets a PD, if it's fired in late it's maybe a INT, threw it with pressure in his face too

the TD was a great play by mclaurin - jabbed at BSteve inside who couldnt give up that leverage with no MoF safety and that was enough space for Daniels to throw another fade (BSteve still got his hand in there at the catch-point) but another tip your cap type play

the final washington drive, first play
think Ro drops the wrong way - he and hamilton end up basically on top of each other guarding the same zone which leaves no one underneath McLaurin
dont love the playcall on the 4th down that left nate 1v1 with a zero blitz - think he was unlucky to get the PI given against him tbh... wasnt much of a tug and it was definitely some physical play going both ways

TLDR:

i do think, generally, that this washington passing attack is really well designed and that for the mostpart the ravens secondary did a good job in coverage - they had some issues with those over routes and even with the all-22 im not sure what went wrong or whether that's just a perfect situational playcall

what's frustrating is that it doesnt feel like there's just 1 thing that we can magically fix and make all this go away - seems like there's some communication issues persisting in coverage - there was lots of frantic communicating going on right up until the snap a lot of times, more than just a couple of times guys were covering the same space too

on the plus side, not a ton of guys getting beat

and i dont think laying the blame at MW is fair at all - think he was absolutely fine

Stephens was beat by McLauren right off the LoS. He was behind him right away.
