Coaching Carousel 2025

If this happens, Dak Prescott will be traded to Tennessee or Cleveland so Cowboys can trade up and acquire Shedeur Sanders.

I would be quite surprised if the Deion Sanders act works at all in the NFL, but this is such a Jerry Jones type of move that I’m kinda rooting for it just to see what happens.

Patriots made a mockery out of the Rooney Rule just so they can hire Vrabel. Rumors suggest that Josh McDaniels will return as Offensive Coordinator, so Kraft getting the band back together.

So a) the Rooney Rule has been a mockery for a long, long, long time now and b) you could argue this is just the flip side of the coin from last years hiring cycle, where the Patriots didn't do an interview cycle at all and promoting an internal candidate to HC 24 hours after firing the last one. If that coach is a minority, its acceptable. If that coach is white, its unacceptable.

So... is it safe to say the Bucs should fire Todd Bowles tomorrow? He's just not the guy for Tampa, he's carried by a talented roster but seemingly his coaching dooms the team. Bucs could still get a top candidate as their next Head Coach so.... it's not too late.
I don't think that roster is that talented.

Cowboys can't trade Dak before June 1. They could do it after June 1, but obviously you don't get the draft picks for this year then.

They can make a move up for Shedeur and have him sit for a year or two, but Jerry is never doing that.

Agreed. I think it'll make Dallas a bigger dumpster fire than they already are.
I think Deion coaching college kids is a LOT different than Deion coaching grown men, several of which will make more than he does. I think his act will wear thin quickly, and I don't think he'll be able to prevent himself from taking shots at Jerry for not doing exactly what he wants all the time.

I don’t want to get into a DEI convo but I do think there is something inherently wrong with the current Rooney Rule. In that I absolutely agree with you.

I get the intent of the rule was to ensure minority coaches get a shot but also experience interviewing. I will say I think the rule should be changed to instead show diversity in interviewing. If that means we set requirements on number of candidates to interview or not well that’s not up to me but maybe it should be.

I do think there are niche cases where if a team is entirely sold and locked in on a specific coach like we saw this year with Vrabel and with Gruden I think they should be able to just go and hire them. Reason being is it becomes a farce and a rather empty he’s true.

Jerry? Deion won’t allow it lol

Well again ignoring the aspect that these types of "rules" pretty much by definition have to promote discrimination in some form or fashion against somebody, the challenge is determining what you want the desired outcome to be. If the outcome is to simply get more interviews for minorities, then its succeeding, because you've made it a requirement. If the outcome is to actually get minorities hired for more HC jobs, and actually keep those jobs, then I think its fallen flat for the most part.

And some organizations do better than others. Some actually believe in hiring the best person based on their perception.
The Patriots "interviewed" Byron Leftwich and David Shaw for their HC gig. And they did so pretty much before they interviewed anyone else. I think it'd be hard to argue that those two "candidates" were given real, actual consideration for the job. And I think they know it too.

I think the NFL believes or wants to present the rule helps lead to more minority coaches and management as a result of more interviews. I’m not sure if it’s actually true because there’s some legitimate debate to that.

Not sure how Leftwich and Shaw felt about the interview but I’m sure they knew it was to satisfy the rule.

there are specific exemptions for contractual succession plans
that's why the pats could hire mayo without a process
that's why the ravens could hire EDC without a process

hiring mayo wouldnt have satisfied the rooney rule either - rooney rule requires 2 external minority candidates to do in-person interviews

I'm aware. You could also argue that such succession plans, at least partially, are discriminatory in nature. It's why a lot of major Corporations don't allow for them without at least doing due diligence internally first (i.e. interviewing all applicants internally for the job).

I wasn't suggesting it would satisfy the Rooney Rule. I was suggesting that, in both instances, the entire process was merely a sham process to specifically target and hire a specific person, without really given any credence to the qualifications of any other candidates.

Browns have their new Offensive Coordinator. Given the Bama connection, perhaps Jalen Milroe is a possibility in the Draft for Cleveland.
