Nice look from Kenny young.

Yeah, Kenny Young was impressive in both run and pass coverage. Part of the knock on him was that he wasn’t good getting off blocks. I was impressed, thanks for sharing.

Janarion Grant had one great return and one muffed. i'm not a S.T expert but Grant spends too much time moving laterally, I know he has to get behind his blocks but imho this doesn't allow him to accelerate fast enough. He only got 3 yards on the other 4 punts.

Saying he only got 3 yards on 4 other punts is misleading. He should’ve called a fair catch on all 4. That’s just him trying to do too much. Half of punt returning is moving laterally to find the running lanes.

You’re making something out of nothing. He’s easily the best returner we’ve had since Jacoby.

Bills didn't really give him much space on those returns so he kinda had to move laterally. Also, it looked like he was close to breaking off another decent punt return, but got tripped up at the last second before he could get away. Honestly, aside from the muff, I liked what I saw from him; it seems that he has the ability to break a big return at any point with his elusiveness and ability to spin out of tackles.

Yea you can Easily tell this guy has a shit load of skill but is just trying a bit to hard to prove himself.

And the fact that he’s so eager to prove himself shows real confidence, I like it.

As far as the muff goes, the weather was probably a factor and I don’t expect that to happen often. He’s very confident fielding the ball.

And we're not going to find one unless we part ways with a high draft pick. Something I'm certain we're not willing to do, because we would've done it way back so he could've gotten to see the playbook etc.

im not sure even with a high draft pick who we would be able to even try and go after
the only way is if close to the trade deadline a team that is deciding to rebuild after already being basically out of the picture and wants to get rid of an older but good center - otherwise not sure where this center would come from

interesting nuggest from filmstudy's defensive notes for the game - i remember seeing this and somebody commenting on it during the game:

"
• On 3 plays, the Ravens lined up with no defensive linemen, but utilized all 5 of their outstanding OLBs at the same time with Mosley and 5 DBs. This is a more extreme version of a package frequently used by Pees with 1 down linemen, 5 linebackers, and a nickel in passing situations. The results of those plays were a 3-yard sack by Tavon Young (Q1, 8:12), Jefferson’s interception (Q2, 5:50), and Smith’s 4-yard sack (Q3, 10:49). I’m going to go out on a limb and say we will see more of that package."

Another fun note from Ken Mckusick's defensive write up:

"Brent Urban (27 snaps) quietly had a remarkable game. When he was on the field, the Bills ran 14 pass plays, including:

• 1 completion for a loss of 1
• 9 incompletions
• 1 interception
• 3 sacks for a combined loss of 21

That’s a freakish -1.6 yards per pass play with Urban in the game. In terms of individual contributions by racing form notation:

• (Q1, 5:48) Bulled Ducasse for pressure as Peterman overthrew Benjamin
• (Q1, 1:32) Bulled jumbo TE Newhouse 3 yards and drew holding
• (Q2, 9:35) Bulled RG Miller to share initial flush on Suggs’ S-5
• (Q2, 4:10) Bulled RG Miller to blow up McCoy RM1"

for those not doing the maths that means that in every single pass play urban was on the field for the bills offence didnt get a single positive yard

The weather was definitely a factor as I don't recall Grant muffing any of his returns during preseason (he did fumble, but that was during a return).

He's definitely our best returner since Jacoby and should only get better with more experience (and better weather lol).

There's no denying that Urban causes a lot of problems when he's on the field.

He has work to do in that regard but he's in a scheme that can generally keep him clean as that part of his game hopefully comes along. He does have tremendous intuition and understanding in the run game and that part of his make up is massively undersold. It'll be interesting to see tif he's matched up against Eifert/Mixon this week.

I feel like i might as well just quote the whole article from Ken Mckusick but this is what he wrote on ZDS:

"Za’Darius Smith (34 snaps) had a pass rush game that included a number of near misses. In racing form:

• (Q2, 9:35) Generated flush shared with Urban that led to Suggs’ drive-ending S-5
• (Q2, 3:31) Chased down Peterman for drive-ending RR1 (near sack)
• (Q3, 12:22) Dropped INT from Peterman on Pierce’s QH
• (Q3, 10:49) Cleaned up on Tim Williams’ flush for drive-ending S-4 of Allen
• (Q3, 5:25) Chased down Allen from pocket on RM3 (near sack)
• (Q3, 4:12) Tackled Allen after RPO fake, but scored as RR-2 (near sack)
• (Q4, 14:22) Drew holding on RG Miller to negate PR15

Smith was the Ravens most effective defensive player and could have finished with 4 sacks. He had the opportunity to rush both from OLB and the interior and appears primed for a big year."

One note from me is that the first near sack he noted is definitely one he will want back - he found himself on the floor again - although he did better than last year - this year he didnt just fall over, in stead he got stiff-armed by the qb lol - he's going to be hiding in shame in the film room this week hoping to get away from his teammates ribbing him albeit the rest of his game probably means he'll get away with it

Maybe we have ZDS too much shit? He always comes firing out of the gate, maybe this year he’s put some spikes in his cleats and can stay on his goddamn feet lol

Nope everyone did this EXACT thing last year. Stop. Everyone was calling ZDS amazing at this time last year.

He’s not a bad player really but he just totally lacks the ability to finish most of the time.

I REFUSE to hype him up like everyone was last year.

if he gets a few more finishes this year than he did last year though he'll still be getting close to double figure sacks which means we'll get a decent comp pick when he leaves

and it is probably fair to mention that the hype stopped because he got injured early (n week 1 iirc) and then came back less dominant than before he got injured...
he was unblockable before his injury vs the bengals and he's been unblockable at times during the preseason and he was a major problem for the bills OL too
