Welcome to Baltimore: Earl Thomas and Mark Ingram

Militant X 1

Ravens Ring of Honor
The difference in excitement between the two was striking to me. It has probably got more to do with their personalities but Ingram sounded like he was really rearing to go! Earl Thomas seems to be very quiet much like Mosley.

Earl is more sober-minded. Less talk and more action! I loved watching his demeanour and silent swagger during the press conference. You can tell that he's ready to suit up and be a Raven!

WELCOME ABOARD INGRAM AND THOMAS!!

Not sure if he's the smartest (B. Wagner calls Seattle D plays) but he is smart. The thing about him is that he has the range to go with instincts / smarts, which makes him a special kind of player.

A funny idiosyncrasy of Ravens fans is that we’re the only fan base in the league that gives a flying fuck who wears the green dot lol. Even Harbaugh said it was overblown last year.

Is Weddle a smarter player than Suggs because Suggs didn’t call the plays?

Anyway, huge signing. Makes our defense both simpler and harder to attack at the same time. Agree with others that the pass rush needs work but I have to believe that Williams and Bowser will step up this year. Too much talent between those two to continue to disappoint. I also expect Judon to be next in a long line of guys that ball out for a contract and go elsewhere the following year a la Thomas/McPhee/Jones/Smith etc. etc. etc.

Re: Ingram

All I know is that if he was ever meant to be a top 5 back in the league, this is his chance to do it. This division is downright soft at the ILB position and I expect Roman to turn him into a monster downhill.

Another underrated trait is his pass protection ability. If Ingram can be a 3 down back for us with Edwards and Dixon giving him spells, Jackson should have every opportunity to take the next step for us at QB.

DeCosta has done well so far, on paper. Let’s see if he can duplicate Ozzie’s wizardry late in free agency/training camp and give us an upgrade at the skill positions in the draft.

With sizzle now gone it would make sense for us to find an edge rusher to hold onto as a successor/stalwart - we’ve been able to rotate guys in at one edge position because we haven’t had to worry about the other side for 16 years

I agree but I don’t think it’s blasphemy to say that, at least for the past few years, Suggs probably held us back a bit in the pass rush category. I think we have an opportunity to see even more rotation at EDGE with Suggs gone and while I expect our run defense to weaken a bit, I’m hopeful we can more than make up for that in the sack and turnover columns.

Harbaugh saying it doesn't make it a fact. We looked like amateurs when Mosley was out.

Dalton has fucked us enough in the past with CJ playing so whatever.

CJ is a good linebacker. He's not a great one. Like i said, if you look at his resume ( pro bowls all pro etc) it looks like he's elite BUT when you actually watch him, he's simply not a good cover LB. He doesnt have sideline to sideline speed. He'd be great in the OLD NFL.

Bobby Wagner is what you look for in the modern NFL.

A lot of guys were way better in coverage. He was a very average blitzer. I respectfully have to disagree.

Uhhh...how many all pros did we have on defense again? Good lord.

Edit: Man I’m still trying to wrap my head around this comment. Are you comparing a mike linebacker to DBs? Or are you saying Peanut was better in coverage than CJ and therefore he wasn’t our best player? Please help lol this is giving me a headache. Maybe Judon? What?

Edit 2: ILBs from other teams????

Edit 3: Also what does any of that have to do with the (in)significance of wearing the green dot???

Overblown? Maybe, but I think Harbs may have been protecting his players. Here’s a short article that describes what happened with play calling in the Cinci game when CJ went down.

I think it’s more of an experience thing, but football intelligence could certainly enter into it as well.

My point is that it’s a matter of position not some type of measure of a player’s ability. For example if your best player by far was say...Aaron Donald, you wouldn’t have him wear the green dot because he is not positioned on the field in a place that is conducive to wearing it.

Yes you are right, when Mosley went down our defense suffered for the remainder of the game due both to communication issues AND because we lost a premiere player that we couldn’t replace.

By the next game we had fixed the communication issue but were still weak up the middle because we didn’t have Mosley.

My original post was observing that only this fan base is fanatical about who will or won’t wear the dot. You want it to be your Mike linebacker because he is the only player (other than perhaps a purely in the box strong safety) that doesn’t have to play out of position to effectively communicate with the whole defense.

Weddle was good at it, but it’s arguable that his turnovers disappeared because he couldn’t play as deep due to the responsibility.

The point of the article was by the players own description when CJ went down and Peanut took over relaying plays they were in total disarray. When Weddle took over after the half it was much different. Gave up 28 in the first half, 6 after the break.

Again this is described by the players own words, not someone else’s opinion. Guessing that is the source of fan reactions you describe as fanatical and in that particular instance it seemed to mean a great deal who had the green dot.

Isn’t this the same point I expressed in my post? If anything that article is an indictment of the coaching staff for not having the appropriate backup plan in place.

I’m certainly not suggesting that communication doesn’t matter on the field. Our entire defense is predicated in the players reading the offense and communicating what they see.

And yes, my observation is about the fan base...as expressed in my initial and all subsequent posts. It is an idiosyncrasy I find interesting and it is surely a direct result of the Bengals debacle.

On topic, I’ll be intrigued to see how the ILB rotation works out. As I said previously you’d hope your Mike is taking signals from the DC so that you can be as flexible as possible on the back end.

Not really......you said they fixed the communication issue the next game and were still weak up the middle. But they actually fixed the communication issue in that same game and the defense played much better in the second half after Weddle took over. Seems the communication issue may have had a much greater impact in that game than CJ going down.

I see you edited your post, thanks for the clarification.

As mentioned I think experience in relaying the plays is key and probably just as important as having “football smarts”. I would also think that either Peanut or Kenny Young will be more than capable once they are comfortable in the role.

first and foremost. Harbaugh saying that is overblown is just Harbaugh being Harbaugh. Of course it matters who is calling the plays in the defense. Second we aren't the only defense in the league that cares about those things. Trust me on that one.

We aren't saying Weddle or CJ for that matter are smarter than Suggs because they called the plays. It is normally the ILB or S than calls the plays.
