Training Camp and the Preseason

Per NFL.com: Coach John Harbaugh was asked by ex-Ravens coach Brian Billick what the pitch count on Jackson running this season might be, noting Cam Newton's career-high is 139 rushing attempts.

"I'd bet the over on that one. I'd bet the over for sure," Harbaugh said without hesitation. "It's going to be interesting. I don't think we know the exact numbers or the math."

I'm not a fan of this, or do you guys agree with Lamar running over 8.6 times a game? I don't get it, passing is heavily favored in so many ways.

He put on 7-10 pounds of quick-twitch muscle. Overall he looks improved, but I want to see a couple of preseason drives first.

counter question: how is Za'Darius looking so far? Does Pettine plan to let him rush from the edge or more from the inside?

I'm ok with it. Don't remember him taking many hits last year. At very least, there's no harm in letting other teams *think* this is going to happen.

Second and third team lines yes. This is the part of the year where the elimination of two-a-days really hurts. Trenches are all about physicality and having 50% as many practices in pads slows down the progression.

Combine all that with the fact that Roman is essentially throwing an encyclopedia of plays at them every day and you have a recipe for mental mistakes. I won’t be worried unless we’re still hearing about this kind of stuff after a couple preseason games.

I mean yes the 2nd and 3rd teams were committing the penalties but without Yanda it seems even 1st team couldn't block.

Passing is heavily favored unless your qb is the most dangerous athlete on the field

I gotcha, I’m just saying we’re in the dog days of training camp and we have a revolving door at both G spots right now. I would worry more about the DL not taking advantage of that than the OL struggling a bit. And our starting RT is in the proverbial doghouse. Will see how it plays out.
 
I don't recall reading the axiom that, " it is normal for the defense to be further along than the offense this early in camp....." (this year that is...wonder what that tells us)

also, not a word on Mack?

Harbaugh on flagging Jordan Lasley: "It was a 15-yard penalty on the offense because I saw the offensive player punch the defensive player in the face. I was informed later that the defensive player punched him in the face first. I missed it, often like the officials do."

If there were a trend, I would have assumed the opposite because, as these practices are open to the public, they are just going to be running some fairly generic routes and not the complex defense that made the Ravens number 1.

Our pass offense was below average when Lamar took over, but it was still better than our run offense. Lamar threw 6.08 NY/A while our rushing offense produced 5.14 ypc. I expect our offense to be diverse, but the rushing era is over.
Scrambling and designed qb-runs aren't sustainable. I'm currently watching "All or nothing" and you can clearly see that their season went down after Cam was injured again and even he took unnecessary hits after being in the league for more than 5 seasons.

Uh...comparative yards per attempt running vs. passing is...dubious at best. Running 5.14 yards per carry would be impressive in any era...That’s a first down every 2 plays and absolute TOP dominance.

This is such a tired narrative. Lamar is just as likely to get injured taking sacks than he is while rushing the ball. At the very least, Lamar can somewhat control how he gets hit when he's rushing/scrambling (he can slide or get down before contact, get to the sideline, etc.). I honestly have no problem with Lamar getting 10-12 carries per game while he continues to develop as a passer.

Yes but he runs the ball FAR more than he would ever get sacked. I think the NFL record for sacks allowed is either high 60s or low 70s by the expansion Texans and Lamar Jackson had 115 in just the regular season games AFTER he took over as the starter. Note there are only 7 of those so even if you double it and drop the extra 2 games its still 230 rushing attempts which is a LOT of hits to take as a QB.
