How often has that been the case with him though? I don't think the game against The Redskins should be a true indicator on his ability to run routes because honestly it isn't clear if that was really LJ fault or Boykins fault. I'm at all saying Boykins has been perfect but I don't think he has been looking like Breshad Perriman or Tandon Doss either. Just looks like it's possible that him and LJ just need to develop more chemistry together.
It was a problem a few times last year, it happened twice vs the browns, and it happened today. Boykin is very noncommittal and indecisive throughout his breaks, he hesitates in and hesitates out, and seems to have a problem with being a step too deep or too shallow on comebacks and takes forever to actually get turned around. it’s caused him to be off the mark quite a few times and it was his biggest issue last season.

it’s a shame because he’s an Uber talented kid and I love his blocking, but he’s very much overthinking a lot of his breaks, it’s a problem that kinda jumps off the film with him. I know I’ve written him off a few times lol but I’m not actually writing him off yet because it’s very much a thing that can be developed. My biggest issue is if we waste a whole season trying to get his confidence up and it never works out, and a guy like duvernay is left on the bench and not getting developmental reps in

So I'm just finding myself in a sort of mental conundrum. If you generally look at the stats through 4 weeks, there are very few teams anywhere near our point differential. Which means obviously outside of KC we've been winning comfortably. The thing is you have to be a good team to literally always take care of business where you should. And that's exactly what we've been doing. But after watching 4 games, I don't think we've looked even good in any of them. I think our offense has looked at times extremely anemic and other times really powerful in bursts. That's not good. Our defense has been solid outside of KC, but they were shredded. A solid defense and a streaky offense is not a recipe for a Superbowl I don't think. I'm not ready to right us off, but something just doesn't seem right.

The only way we win a Super Bowl is Mahomes gets hurt . We do not have the offensive level of talent the Chiefs have . In fact , the Steelers will beat us at least once this year I have a feeling .

Way too early in the season to say that. A lot of Ravens probably didn't think The Ravens would be 14-2 team last year base of the talent they had but honestly when it comes to The Ravens offensive talent I don't think it has reached it's peak yet. Would like to see The Ravens add a veteran tight end that could give Mark Andrews and Nick Boyle a break at times.

Another not so great game but it was an inferior opponent, so the mistakes were okay. As long as we get better each week, I'm okay with that. Don't really care how we get the Ws... just get the Ws.

Lamar was a little off on throwing the ball. Put a few of those in a better position and we probably don't have too many negatives today. Still seems to be a disconnect between Lamar and Boykin, but Boykin is out there busting his ass on running downs so it's hard to take him off the field. Duvernay still needs to be more involved.

Running game wasn't too bad but still didn't look like 2019. Felt like Brown and Fluker held up reasonably well. Bozeman honestly might be our best OL so far this season.

DL definitely missed Wolfe at times. Saw Washington get pushed around quite a bit today. Secondary has a few minor gaffes but nothing major. Queen had his best game by far and we should be excited to see him continue to progress. Pass rush did it's job today and Judon finally showed up.

Biggest issue on D was getting gashed by the screens. Seems the recognition is just a hair too late. Hopefully some film study can help to correct that because we've been beat by the RB in the passing game two games in a row now.

there are lots of positives looking towards what this team will look like when it clicks - we're seeing progress from players that we wanted to see progress from:

patrick queen had his best game as a raven so far
tyre phillips is getting steadier and steadier
orlando brown possibly had his best game this season despite being at LT
Duvernay had the most snaps he's had all year and looks lightning fast but I still want to see him more involved
Deshon Elliott made some nice plays
Anthony Averett quietly had his 2nd nice start in a row (was not an issue during the chiefs game at all)

will have to check out washington - didnt pay much attention to him live (noticed brandon williams and justin ellis getting a lot of push which is good to see though)

but we still have some guys who will get more involved as the season progresses - james proche had his 1st offensive snap (not in garbage time), Justin Madubuike is still waiting to get on the field and has practiced on a limited basis for 2 weeks now so probably not far away and Malik Harrison has more to offer

for me the running game is the biggest concern - they're not having much success at all before the 4th quarter - ingram and gus were both going at around 3 ypc until the 4th quarter and it's similar to what happened in the texans game

but the lack of running efficiency early in games is what's forcing us to get pass happy early which is what's sometimes putting us behind the 8-ball - at the moment this isnt a chunk passing game which means that 1 incompletion can sometimes completely disrupt the offensive rhythm which is not sustainable - the passing concepts in general have been pretty uninspiring but Lamar's not been as efficient as last year - my hope is that as the OL settles in he'll get more comfortable and find his rhythm again but he seems very much out of rhythm

sidenote: was nice to see Justice Hill immediately make plays on special teams (i think he immediately came in as a gunner but could be mistaken)

It’s risky to dial up plays to Boykin because the things he is struggling with, can cause some disastrous results. Slow out of breaks and out of position on balls that are already being thrown is a very dangerous thing, that can lead to a pick 6.

yeah i put that out on boykin too - although it is worth mentioning lamar said he didnt give boykin a chance on that play so maybe we mis-read what was happening

seemed like boykin screwed up there but could be wrong

either way it speaks to the larger timing/chemistry issue between lamar and boykin right now that's not really improving

i guess on the chemistry side it's probably notable that he wasnt able to get down to florida this offseason because i think he was somewhere where you werent allowed to travel from

the pattern you speak to on offence indicates to me that it's just not clicked yet - we have spurts of explosion and efficiency but they're inconsistent - there's a lot of young pieces on this offence and i imagine that partially has something to do with the lack of cohesion so far

im not worried yet but i will be if we get to midseason and we still havent improved

for reference it didnt really start clicking on offence until week 7 or maybe even until after the bye last year

tbf look at what the browns have done in every game that wasn't against us - they're clearly a good team this year and we absolutely pummelled them without trying - they have a high-powered offence and we smothered them

i think with this defence you have to look at KC and call it an outlier (so far) - and tbf outside of the chargers 4 man rush unit no one's been able to slow down the chiefs offence at all

Pernell McPhee has been the unsung hero so far - hasnt had much in the way of pass rush but has consistently dominated in the run game - ive seen him lose contain maybe once all year and has collapsed running plays consistently all year

idk what his playing time split between running downs and passing downs is but my guess is it leans towards running downs a bit more this year - he's been playing less than 50% of the snaps which is a good sign - in only 1 game did he see more than 50% which is also good in terms of his usage

Been saying this about Gus, he looks like he should be the 1 given how Ingram has played. We need to get him caught up on how to pass protect.

Gus can pass protect - last year especially he did a lot of pass pro - he's such a big physical back that he has more of a chance of neutralising blitzing defenders too but he's clearly 3rd choice on 3rd down right now

what gus doesnt really offer is a receiving aspect to his game but all 4 of our RBs offer a useful skillset on 3rd down

but gus is clearly also our best RB (of the 2 that are actually getting carries right now) between the tackles and we know he's great on zone-read plays because even if the defender doesn't get fully taken out of the play by the mesh point he likely breaks the arm tackle

Good lord, Queen is 6th in solo tackles with a FF, a FR and a sack. I can’t wait until he gets his first pick
