why though?

he's not exclusively a slot, so he's not coming off the field... no one had an issue with jalen ramsey playing the star position for the rams last year and he's getting paid more than marlo...

in what way is the slot, in this day and age, a devalued position? if anything, it helps put one of your best players closer to the LoS to be more impactful and harder to remove from the play and allow you to use him to nullify important matchups

did you think it was a waste putting him up against darren waller or hunter renfrow when we played the raiders? he's a versatile man-coverage weapon to put in difficult positions on high leverage plays
Marlon isn't just a man cover corner as well. In 2020 he was one of the best zone corners in the NFL and was playing in the slot.

You mean the 20m WRs who align all over the formation to create favourable matchups including in the slot... there are very few top WRs who don’t play a ton of snaps in the slot
ie AJ Brown plays from the slot. Guess he shouldn't have the contract he just received because he's only a slot WR

Did you ever think the highest paid slot CB is only paid $9M because he only plays the slot? The best CBs in the league move all around the field for the most part

Looking at the list of top paid CBS and doing a cursory search most either shadow a player or play outside. Playing snaps in the slot by design is a very rare thing because the best slot corner in the NFL is 9m and you don’t pay 20m for a 9m job.

That isn’t true though. 16.2 percent of his snaps are from the slot (Ty Google). That is far from a slot WR. That is an outside WR who they occasionally move around to create mismatches.

stop calling these top corners that play slot, slot corners. They are much more than that. If Humphrey plays the slot he won't be playing it all the time, he will be playing it to take the opponents best weapon out of the game. Yes Humphrey will play in the slot, but he certainly won't be a CB3. CBs that get paid 8 to 9m and play the slot exclusively are cb3's.

just so we’re clear, Nobody here is calling Humphrey a slot corner, just saying that the more snaps he’s freed up to play out of the slot the more impactful he is on the game, which is already proven to be true

Exactly. Marlon plays the slot because (a) he matches up against the best receivers and they often get flexed inside and (b) they want him making plays on the ball in more ways than just PDs... aka forced fumbles and things of the like.

If you play 80% of your snaps in the slot you are a slot corner. The top paid slot corners make 9m per year. As a general rule if you play 80% of your snaps at a single position that is your position. Similarly Brown is not a slot receiver because he plays 80% of his snaps outside.

Name the players
So your top paid corners in order:

1. Jaire Alexander
2. Denzel Ward
3. Jalen Ramsey
4. Marshon Lattimore
5. Marlon Humphrey
6. Xavien Howard
7. Tre'Davius White (who might be the best on this list)
8. Darius Slay
9. Byron Jones
10. JC Jackson

Who are the slot guys at $9M though? Because a lot of those guys above end up playing slot in some capacity.

The irony here lol. Marlon isn't playing 80% of the slot snaps so therefore he isn't a slot CB and your whole argument is null and void.

AJ Brown had 637 offensive snaps (taking out special teams and defensive snaps) last year and 27% 178 snaps were in the slot. This is less than 80% outside based on your formula.

That being said, I actually thought he played more snaps in the slot than the numbers illustrated. I'm aware he plays both wide and slot receiver though.

Lots of passes are thrown to slot guys nowadys, sometimes the majority of them are.. if he team has to take their best and highest paid cb to limit or lockdown the passes being thrown to the slot wr, they will do it.. hump got paid the way he did because of his versatility in the slot… if he was only a marcus peters type of guy, i doubt we wouldve gave him 80 mil

so what you’re doing is taking the most fluid positions in football and making up your own “general rule” about them
