The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: Week 16 Edition

No the win was not awe inspiring, but games like this happen in the NFL. You just have to find a way to win. We did.

PIT had to beat this same team with a FG as time expired. Keep moving forward and keep finding a way to win.

Good point and Yes and it still counted as a win for Pitt also.

The ugly: Tim Williams 0 snaps, Tyus Bowser 2 snaps, Wormley 0 snaps. Why draft if you want to let them warm the bench when clearly you need help in the front seven?

The ugly: I said something nice about Joe Flacco (for the fourth week in a row, mind you), so that's gotta be fake news.

Hey guys im back! Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas!

The ugly: the win

The good: the win

We dont need to play our best games all the time. We just needed to get out of there woth a W and we did it. Now lets take on the Bengals and punch our ticket

No, although I’m thinking it was an acl. He left the game after falling down (non contact).
Yeah, I just watched it again. He was hardly hit and just fell down. Sadly he may be another DB disappointment in the line of guys like Webb and Smith that just can’t stay on the field.

Hoping for the best and maybe it wasn’t as bad as it looked.

I hope there's some plan to release them like rabid dogs in the playoffs. Other wise, I really have no idea what we're doing with those guys. The most frustrating part is when they are in, they seem to make an impact.

Bowser and Wormley yes but Williams has not been good in his snaps.

This to me is like what they did with Kruger. PASS RUSH SPECIALIST... yet, he's brought in on running downs when we know what his weakness is. That's on coaching. He's generated pressure when used to rush.

Inconsistent pressure but ZDS generates pressure (and falls down a lot) and xan do ither things , but Williams isn't good enough to justify only sending him after the passer and giving up any surprise.

i just want to say that having seen the snap counts it's absolutely no surprise at all that we had no outside pass rush...

Terrell Suggs: 51 snaps
Matt Judon: 52 snaps
ZDS: 41 snaps (most on the inside)
Tyus Bowser: 2 snaps
Tim Williams: 0 snaps

so essentially we had 2 outside pass rushers play virtually every single snap with no respite

as i said in the gameday thread the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results
yet these snap counts suggest that is exactly what the coaching staff did - we just sent the same 4 guys over and over with no thought to the use of different guys rotationally or making use of different skillsets

but it gets worse because we only had 4 dlinemen active but gave carl davis (who got one of the few good pushes i saw all game) only 12 snaps
that means that we had pierce, henry, williams all take the vast majority of the snaps - i know we werent in base a lot but williams didnt play well, pierce was invisible and henry only got 30 snaps (first time that's happened for a while)

our inactives list had wormley and tim williams on it - what's the point in drafting these guys and having them sit on the bench? both of them have shown flashes of potential in limited opportunities but for some reason arent being given more opportunities but are being whimsically given snaps apparently depending on the coaches' moods because i dont see how else...

i have some other thoughts on the inactives too... if we arent gonna use terrance west and he doesnt add anything to special teams then what's the point in having him active - he had 0 snaps on offence and i didnt see him on special teams either which means he was wasting an active roster spot for someone who might have affected the game

snap counts are always a minefield but here are some others that annoyed me:

correa - 3 snaps... why? and in 2 of those 3 snaps i can directly recall him making a mistake that cost the ravens yardage - now maybe whoever he replaced doesnt change that but correa doesnt really offer anything in his current state

davis - 12 snaps... i already mentioned this above but i want to go deeper - if he couldnt handle more than the 12 snaps because of his injury against the browns then it makes no sense not to have wormley (or kaufusi) active to spell his snaps and if it wasnt because of injury then it seems nonsensical because he bullied his man early on and then we never really saw him again which left 3 dlinemen to play all the snaps in a game where the opponent was committed to the run game and play action - it seems like we didnt take the weather or the opponent's game plan into account at all in preparation for this game and we certainly didnt adjust well either

project pat - 3 snaps... makes a lot of sense doesnt it - a day when running was more important and after stacking nice games consecutively, ricard's snaps disappeared all of a sudden - i dont see how that makes any sense at all - its ridiculous that our full back on a day like yesterday got only 3 snaps of offence despite supposedly needing to lean on offence - pat has been one of the biggest reasons for our recent uptick in redzone success and in multiple trips near the redzone yesterday we only scored 2 tds

west - 0 snaps... as above - he adds next to nothing on special teams so if he's not getting snaps on offence then he's wasting a roster spot that could have been used on other players - despite being deep at dline we rarely have more than 4 true dlinemen active which seems stupid to me because it weakens a supposed strength of our defence at the beginning of the year i.e. our ability to rotate but nope west took that roster spot and wasnt really used at all - its almost like the coaches literally dont want any of the other guys active so they just activated anyone knowing that all they'd do is warm the bench

campanaro - 22 snaps... this one seems less egregious but ill contextualise - camp has come on strong the last 2-3 weeks and has worked really well in combination with woodhead, watson, moore, wallace and especially on 3rd down, showing off some really nice route running - he also probably had his best game of the season this week and yet he's getting fewer snaps this week than last - i understand there's a natural variance that will happen week to week but camp was one of our more effective options yesterday in critical situations - im hoping this is merely a small aberration and that he continues to get more snaps even if maclin is back

i disagree - he never got a sack but timmy has shown the ability to pressure qbs vs some of the best olinemen in the league and beat them around the edge with edge rushes that look like everything you want from an edge rusher off the LoS - and the type of edge rushes that we havent seen for a while on this team

... if you go to my profile in fact there is a gif of a beautiful looking rush by timmy that ends in a qb hit - he also got pressures vs the calibre of donald penn, joe thomas earlier in the year

he's being severely hampered by his usage - i dont know why we arent bringing him in with the dime package and letting him hunt off the edge all guns blazing - i cant remember a time where we've just let timmy pin his ears back - all too often ive seen him in on 1st and 2nd down and then taken off the field for 3rd downs with ZDS coming on the field

GODDAMIT... thank you man. Team seems to have no idea what to do with personnel at times. Then we only use they properly in contract years.

And yet they’ve started on offence doing something I really like in 3rd down situations which is have woodhead, Watson, Wallace, camp and Moore all on the field and it’s hard for the defence to key in - they know it’s a pass but they don’t know who to line up against woodhead because sometimes he’s protecting and others he’s split wide or in the slot or he’s running a route out of the backfield, camp in the slot is really hard especially when we’re less than 6 yards to convert because he’s so good in short areas, defenders respect wallace’s speed so he gets a larger cushion and often is the 1st read because he often threatens deep but actually runs a quick come back, Moore often gets sent to the 2nd level which holds the safety and Watson is able to work on a linebacker or 2

What I don’t get is that we can do that on offence with players missing and injuries and key players under performing (read Maclin and perriman) but with all the talent we have on defence we can’t figure out how to put guys in position to succeed consistently
