The Bad, The Ugly, and the Pathetic

Bro, we ran the ball on 3rd and 6
So this isn't a great defense, BUT, it was clear 4 down territory. So basically you had two plays to get 6 yards, which is kind of similar to like 2nd and 6 in a "real" situation.

I wouldn't have done that, but I can see it. The defense obviously doesn't think you'll run, and assuming you're not stuffed, you're at least getting a yard or two to make the next attempt easier.

A change of coordinator likely will not happen, but I stand by my op that a performance like this along with horrible performances in 3 straight weeks warrants a firing. Brandon Williams or not, Jimmy Smith or not we still have Marlon Humphrey, a good not great vet in Carr, Thomas, Judon, etc. Even with the injuries we are far better than this. A 5 foot 9 rookie threw for 349 yards on us, Mahomes for nearly 400, and now Baker who was looking like to be in a sophomore slump got to back on track with 342 on us while we got trampled for 500+yards in an important HOME divisional game.

The Ravens were within one score thanks to an 8pt TD drive until the defense folded. Offense had it's struggles too but the defense cost us the game today no question.

Plenty of question. The offense had 10 points through 3 quarters. Yes the defense sucked (like it ALWAYS does when Jimmy or BWill are out because it turns out some pieces matter), but the offense did nothing until garbage time.

I think the good news is... for the first time in seemingly forever, it doesn't feel like the offense needs much. Sure, would like maybe another weapon on the outside and some upgrades on the interior of the Oline, but they don't feel like high priorities at this point.

Next year you can essentially go all in on a defense that's already pretty young. Linebackers specifically... can sign or draft 2-3 of them, at least, both inside and outside.

But sadly... that doesn't help us this year. Its not what fans normally like to hear, but I never viewed this roster as a SB contending one this season anyway. Its like year 1 of a probably 2-3 year process to build a real special team. We've got some offensive talent that should continue to get better. Now we just need some more on defense, while trying to keep as much as we can.

I'm usually the guy who says don't overspend on players, but guys like Humphrey and Stanley can basically just pick how much they want to make and we should give it to them, and I wouldn't be opposed to ponying up for Judon or Pierce either. They're not world-beaters, but if you let them walk, what's really left? You're talking an almost entire overhaul of OLB, ILB, and DL.

Maybe next year is the year to transition off the "3-4" (which we hardly run anymore anyway), and start to target more interior pass rushers on the Dline. If we're going to go pretty much clean slate, all options should be open.
Its the complete opposite of last year where we had the best defense in football and a decent capable offense with Jackson and Gus Edwards but now we have arguably the worst defense in football and an offense that has to carry the team. An offense that has its problems too. The chiefs dominanted our oline, as did the Browns today, Lamar is still developing his accuracy and misses throws. Marquise Brown looked like a rookie today and for some reason multiple times every week the game announcers have to question why Lamar only throws safety blanket throws to Tight ends and RBs rather than spread the ball to the other WRs, a group that looked stacked during preseason but now we are hearing the typical "we need more receivers" hoopla.

Where the hell is Hayden Hurst? Why involve him at the end of the game and not early on? Dude looks like a bust due to lack of production/game changing ability, and the fact we offered him for Jalen Ramsey and the Jags were like uhhh isn't he a backup? Lol no deep shots today due mostly to a good browns pass rush but worse blocking on our end.

Horrible defense, great running game but middling offense overall as our pass game has faded sharply since week 1

yeah that killed me - reminded me of all those good dean pees defences where some no-name tight end would put up numbers on us on an almost weekly basis
Last time I felt like this was when we let Freaking Gary Barnindge tear us to shreds, only thing was Barnidge actually turned out to be pretty damn solid. How the hell do you let Ricky SEALS JONES go off on you.

Sure, Lamar, presently, would be screwed if he couldn't run. But then again, so would pretty much the entire offense, since its totally built around everybody being able to run. Do you really think we run for 150 yards/game if we have a statue QB like Flacco back there, who is on the complete opposite end of the QB spectrum?

I can promise you this... with or without the late Snead TD, nobody is or was going to be crucifying Lamar this week. In fact, they wouldn't even be talking about him. Everybody will be talking about what they should be talking about... how an alleged vaunted defense gives up 500 yards in back to back weeks. We tried to write off last week as a road game against one of the best offenses this league has ever seen, but you can't write off this one... home game, divisional rival, and a team that was really struggling against everybody else to score points. They didn't struggle doing that today.

Frankly, this game was basically exactly what I saw in Carolina last year... it didn't matter what the offense did. Lamar could have played out of his mind today...we still take the L. We score more... they just score more. Browns left plenty of points on the board today, and if they had more possessions, they would have just kept scoring.

Last week... sure, maybe a better QB performance from a passing standpoint gets us with a chance to win. Today I saw nothing of the sort.

The irony is that this is ultimately the opposite of what fans expected. Fans thought teams would take away Lamar and the rest of the team's running ability and force him to throw. After two weeks, teams have started doing the opposite. They're literally looking at us and saying "we're fine with you running for 200 yards on us", which most fans would think is unheard of. And yet, it hasn't seemed to matter, because the idea behind a dominant running game is you need a complementary dominant defense, otherwise it simply doesn't work.

That's how you get to 2-2.
where have you been?

Thomas is giving Williams shid for being inactive when he’s legitimately hurt?

The dude literally said he pulled up because he didn’t wanna get injured(which btw I’m ok with, I always thought chasing a player all the way to the end zone when you have zero chance was kinda dumb) but he’s gonna start fights over this?

Dude, Thomas needs to realize what locker room he’s in. This ain’t the damn Pete Carroll Seahawks, that’s not gonna fly. If he wants to run his mouth to players who have been here for years and put in their dues and made an impact to this organization, then maybe he should start by doing what he was paid to do, get his damn hands on that ball.

Exactly my point.

Well I took like a year long hiatus from baltimoreravens.com because I couldn't stand the stupidity of the comment section any longer.

Then I came back, was not surprised to see it got even worse, and then they switched to Disqus. After pissing off MomGene repeatedly for about a year and trolling her for the fact that she's not really a Ravens fan at all (just a Flacco homer) and won't admit it, she finally power tripped her way to banning me all together.

So then I had to decide whether to just "quit the boards" all together, but here I am.

I can tell you... stupidity is at an all-time high over there. I don't think anybody over there can even spell "salary cap", much less care about how it works and how you can't just Madden-override anybody on your team that you want.

But I digress...

I'll be here until I get tired of it, but I doubt I'll be as active as I used to be. Frankly, I'm getting pretty close to being done with this fanbase all together.

Im going to attempt it at some point I'm sure. Just did a vid for the Browns first TD drive....Communication terrible. Linebackers bad. Kenny Young had a very bad drive in particular.
Looking forward to it! Very interested in what went wrong.

He did same thing with bobby wagner like 2yrs ago

well please give it a chance. You are a valuable contributor and it would be great to have you on board again. Especially during the forum mock, don't remember if you played that game before. btw, what is Disqus? Am I missing something? If you're talking about the social media comments section over on BR.com, I tend to avoid those altogether.

1. Agree on Hurst. I don't think he'll ever really be much in this offense. This team can't really sustain two quality TE's in my mind, and I think Andrews looks like a stud. Its unfortunate, because there's players we could have gotten there that would have helped more.
I try to think of it this way... if we took Andrews in the 1st, and Hurst in the 3rd, would we be complaining that much about it? Not ideal certainly.
2. I'm not sure where the "receivers hoopla" in the preseason came from. You basically didn't get to see Hollywood Brown at all, Snead looks exactly like we thought he was (not a world-beater, but a reliable set of hands). So what else was there? Boykin looked better in the preseason, but he's still like your 3rd/4th option in the receiver core, at best. How many teams do you know that can sustain quality production from a 3rd/4th receiver most weeks?
I, nor anybody else, should have bought in on guys like Moore or Roberts or anybody else. YOU'VE SEEN THEM PLAY BEFORE. Why would you think this year is any different? Did anybody really think Joe Flacco was what was holding Chris Moore back?
The reason I'm not concerned about the pass catchers is because, like Lamar, they're all young and have room to grow. And we need to give them at least a couple years to do so. If we just keep drafting more playmakers because a rookie doesn't impress, you'll miss on quality talent that was already there.

My stance on the offense is that, except for the Oline, its mostly rookies. I come close to viewing Lamar as a rookie. He played half a season last year, ran about as conservative of an offense as you could possibly run, and still has less than 16 games under his belt. As a passer... he's WAY ahead of where I thought he'd be. He's not as accurate as I'd like, but he's WAY more accurate than he was last year. His mechanics are greatly improved, which was the one thing I cared about. With the offense, I see clear paths where players can improve.

On defense, I see a lot less of that. In fact, it's close to none. I think a guy like Averett or maybe Canady might improve, but who else? I know what Bowser and Wiliams can and can't do. I know what Onwausor can and can't do. I sure as hell know what Jefferson can and can't do.
