Dom McRaven
Hall of Famer
Uhhhhhh ohhhhhh
C'mon man, ya really have to ask? LOL.Was this a joke?
ooft the browns outbreak clearly wasnt over would be my guess - lots of positives
including their HC (and a couple of other coaches) as well as their all-pro guard...
Well I think they would have done that on their own anyway, but yes, its unfortunate. This sucks, COVID is going to ruin their first playoff appearance since 2002.
The Texans have hired Nick Caserio as their new GM and that prompted a VERY INTERESTING tweet from Franchise QB Deshaun Watson.

More info:
I'm now convinced that the Astros sold the success of other Houston sports teams for 1 World Series Championship and this is just the debt being paid. In seriousness though, the Texans need a new Owner that respects his players. Like how are you going to say he can be involved in the process but not involve him at all, then not even interview the guy he wanted.
Probably because he's the owner and Watson is just a player.
While I think its shady to say you'll do something then do another, I will go to my grave having no understanding of why somebody like Watson, or really any player for that matter, has earned the right to be involved in the decision making of who their bosses are. And especially true when it comes to hiring talent evaluators. Like what does Watson's resume look like in running a professional sports franchise? What, he had a great fantasy team that he managed?
I would have thought the $110M in guaranteed money Watson is getting would be more than sufficient compensation for his on-field performance and value to the organization. Doesn't quite seem logical that he wants that AND wants to be able to have input into who his bosses are.
I wouldn't consult with him at all. I'd remind him that he's a player and he's paid to play. If he wants to run a franchise his way, he should seek ways to purchase one. Which, of course, he won't.the thought is that once they've made such a major commitment to you that because of the salary cap you might as well be partners at that point - with the texans the structure of the deal doesnt actually make that a given but in many cases (e.g. with patrick mahomes) the contract you give the QB makes it nonsensical to ignore their opinions given that you've basically entered into a long-term partnership with that player and two of the most important relationships for the franchise are going to be the QB and Coach and the QB and the GM (who they'll have to negotiate with on any future deal) so it makes sense that you'd consult the person who's going to make up half of both those relationships
not saying he should be running the coaching or GM search but it would be weird not to at least touch base with him - and ridiculous to say you'll consult him and then not

When it comes to "touching base with him", that conversation would involve me telling him "I'm hiring this guy... please reach out and congratulate him on getting the job". It would NOT involve me reaching out to Watson and saying "hey Deshaun, with your vast experience with player personnel, salary cap management, and talent evaluation, who you do suggest we hire".
I'm in agreement that what they did wrong was telling him that he'd get input. Because they shouldn't have asked for his input in the first place.
Not really. "Most important player in your franchise" on many teams shifts on an annual basis. Five years from now, he may not even be that. Ownership will outdate that by several decades. You keep franchise players happy by a) paying them market value and b) surrounding them with the talent they need to succeed. Ability to have input into hiring their boss doesn't qualify.seems a bad way to run a franchise not to at least consult the opinions of the most important player on your franchise when hiring the person who's going to be coaching him
not saying they have to hire the guy he wants but would be bizarre not to at least solicit his opinions...
and let's be honest - what do most of these owners know about coaching or player personnel or salary cap management?
you're right that they're within their rights to run their franchise how they like but that doesnt mean they should...
the best leaders communicate and collaborate - it costs them nothing to do so
Houston Texans were a highly profitable business before Deshaun Watson got there. They'll be a highly profitable one long, long, long after he's gone.
Well it does matter, because better GM's put together better rosters, and winning rosters have the opportunity to make more money.but that doesnt change whoever they hire so that is basically meaningless when it comes to football-side decisions
on that basis it doesnt matter who they hire at coach or GM because it fundamentally makes no difference to the financial side of the business...
and you only have to look around the league to see many of the owners absolutely suck repeatedly at hiring GMs and coaches...
