The Random Thought Thread

Last year Patrick Queen was improving a little down the stretch. Than our ILB coach was hired outside of the organization and we brought in Rob Ryan. Could Rob Ryan be the issue or a combination of a new coach and Patrick Queen. Anyway just a thought.

Also, could our defensive line from last year not be as good as it is this year and that is causing some issues for Queen as well.

I just wanted to bring up some talking points. Thoughts?

Queen has been bad, there's no doubt about that, but the way the defense has basically collapsed in three out of five games is insane. Most starters from last year are returning, only Judon and Peters are missing of any significant contributors. Is it those two losses plus Queen's regression or WTF is happening?

Age is catching up to the DL... Williams in particular
ILBs have been awful all around
OLBs are better rushing the passer but worse setting the edge so far
DBs have been impacted because you can't let Humphrey and Peters sit on islands... need to roll help now

Just all of the things combined

defence was able to survive losses late last year too in various games including peters and others - i really do think looking at it that judon had something to do with it - he was just all around such a versatile and reliable piece - oweh's been great so far but i do wonder if judon knitted that front 7 together somewhat and he really was probably the last remaining leader other than co cap from the council

i do wonder if maybe the defence is missing some vocal leadership and willpower in that front 7 outside of campbell

i dont think we're completely beholden to drafting a LB especially with how recent high picks at the position have panned out - it will help that next year we might have the opportunity to re-sign lj fort if/when he's healthy again

i think he's still got a chance to improve - but i think we need to sit him at this point for him to reset his mind
harrison has shown some things at times too but queen's confusion seems to be a little contagious

in terms of missing on defensive picks - we've missed on quite a few decent picks over the last decade or so tbf lol
2012: Upshaw
2013: Elam, Brown
2014: Jernigan, Brooks
2015: Davis
2016: Correa, Kaufusi
2017: Wormley, Williams
2019: Ferguson?
2020: Queen? Harrison?

vs the hits with those high value draft picks: Brandon Williams, CJ Mosley, Marlon Humphrey, Tyus Bowser, Justin Madubuike, Odafe Oweh, Brandon Stephens?

as it looks now we're look at 7/20 hit rate in the top 3 rounds - that's not awful relative to the rest of the league in hit-rate generally but it's not indicative of a team that doesnt usually miss...

what we're really good at is finding contributors and starters in day 3 (and as udfas) almost every single draft class (especially on defence): Brent Urban, Zadarius Smith, Tavon Young, Matt Judon, Maurice Canady, Chuck Clark, Kenny Young, Deshon Elliott, Zach Sieler, Zach Orr, Chris Board, Michael Pierce, Patrick Onwuasor,

I don’t know if I could say we completely missed on Upshaw. He was solid, not spectacular but he provided a role while he was here

He forced the fumble that ended an early 49ers drive in the Super Bowl. Completely changed the game. Might not have won without that. If nothing else, that justifies the pick to me.

And he was a pretty stout edge defender… he didn’t end up being the pass rusher we all hoped for but he was strong at setting the edge so he wasn’t a complete miss

Where he was drafted, that is a miss. If he were a 5th round pick then fine but at that pick that is a bust.

I’ll never forget his hit on Big Ben on Thursday night football. “I lost my breath instantly and remember hitting the ground thinking, 'Boy, that hurt a lot,'"

In terms of our draft class, I think in a few years we're gonna say it was a stellar one. Very early on though, Oweh and Stephens have been incredible for rookies.

Look, I knew Oweh was going to be good because his athleticism was unmatched and he was so disruptive in college for a guy new to the game. He was always gonna be coachable. The zero sacks thing didn't scare me at all.

But the Brandon Stephens thing just gets me. He was my singular freak out moment during the draft. I remember thinking, a corner!!! And who even is this guy? Then Rossi didn't know him either and I was like ffs. But dude has been LEGIT.

I'm not so sure Brandon Stephens even new the guy in the mirror. He probably looked around when he heard his name called.
