The Random Thought Thread

am i being blinded by my ravens fandom?

i get that the steelers are going to have one of the best (if not the very best) defence in the league and big ben is back but im seeing tons of pundits projecting them at 12 wins and winning the division

i get that big ben's back but idk that he makes that much difference - like who's going to actually threaten other teams on that offence other than juju - diontae johnson could become that i suppose but james connor isnt scaring anyone, nor is james washington...
Sometimes, I just don't understand all the love the Steelers get, but that's because I'm more rational than that. I can look back at the teams where the Steelers had one of if not the best offense in the league, yet they still lost more games than they should have and didn't do well in the playoffs. If the Steelers win 12 we will 13 because they aren't going to win the division.

Add in that Big Ben is terrible when he plays away from home and he hasn't played in a year for the most part.

I'm gonna say it, Deshaun Watson, someone that the world loves for some reason, someone they think could be an MVP candidate is probably the most average starting quarterback in the NFL

Seriously I feel like these things that I’ve been very privately thinking to myself are being confirmed... I’ve truly never been impressed with Watson beyond “eh he’s pretty good”. Mahomes is a legit jaw dropper, Lamar can literally take the game in his own hands and will his team to a W without ANY help sometimes, Russell Wilson is the most prolific passer I’ve ever seen in a mobile qb, I’ve never felt any of that with Watson, yeah he’s a decent passer, yeah he’s mobile, and every now and then he will make a Superman type play, but those are few and far between and those Superman plays are VERY often just Superman efforts with disastrous results.

to me he’s a poor mans cam Newton at best. I said what I said.

Yeah I totally agree. Poor man's Cam Newton sounds so harsh, but I really think it's true

So here's my take...
1. He's a bit overrated.
2. He's way, way, way more accurate than Cam Newton ever was. I think he's a more explosive runner too. Cam is just a huge QB with good speed for his size, who's hard to tackle. He's never been elusive or great inside the pocket, and his accuracy issues are well documented. Every throw Cam Newton makes is one speed.
3. Watson's problems have been coaching. He's never had anybody decent. Never had an OC who understood how to maximize what he does, and Bill O'Brien is one of the worst coaches (and talent evaluators) in the league. He's literally just riding off of the many assistant coaches who looked great in NE. He's dramatically underachieved with the offensive talent they've had in Houston for years, and if they played in a much more competitive division, he would have been fired years ago.

If Deshaun Watson were on the Ravens, he would have won MVP last year, not Lamar.

me neither - but even if he did - who's he throwing to other than juju?
I think the Steelers are the biggest ? going into the season.

There's two camps:
1. They have a great defense, and Ben is going to elevate them into a contender.
2. He's not going to age well, and they'll be an average team.

I'm in camp two. I don't think Pittsburgh has very much talent, at all, on offense. Juju is a decent receiver, but I don't think there other guys are any good, and I don't think its going to be a case of Ben elevating them. James Conner is injury prone and, to me, is a very pedestrian back, and their Oline, while still decent, isn't anything special.

I think, especially early in the year, they're going to struggle to score points.

That being said, like most of the AFC North, they have a very favorable schedule on paper this year.

BWill with a pay cut. Sounds like the $3M will be available in incentives, but are NLTBE and would hit the 2021 cap if he does happen to earn them. Gotta assume he realized he was on the chopping block next year. This might have saved his job in 2021.

saved his job and allows the ravens to keep him at a favourable price but bwill gets the guarantees

opens up some cap space now for this season too - we’re back up to 10m in space

I think maybe one of Stanley or Humphrey is about to get extended before the market gets outta control, last night we saw prime examples of why you want a great OT
