The Random Thought Thread

Hortiz and Macdonald will definitely be a 1-2 combo somewhere in the future but hopefully both stay on beyond this year. I do worry that if Jim leaves Michigan that Michigan could throw a bunch of money at Macdonald for him to be the Head Coach.
the only advantage here is that he wouldn't take any coaches with him. Macdonald is as good as gone.

When the lineup for this season and the schedule came out....I was honestly expecting a 10-7 season. The Odell Beckham signing had me cringing really hard, and you can argue to the teeth whether it was worth it or not but I initially saw it as an attempt to justify the Lamar contract. The Ravens were always a playoff viable team but there was something about this season I wasnt feeling too comfortable with. And thats the Ravens going so "all in" through the course of the last two off seasons. To me, this all spelled disaster and a situation where we would just be relying on Lamar's ankles that didn't have the greatest past.

The evolution of the players on this roster is something alot of people cant account for, and I'll attribute that to this organization and how it's adapted over the years to it's obvious problems. While it can be nerve wracking having a coach with a penchant for going for it on 4th down and being aggressive, look at other forums. We have been spoiled so much as a Special Teams Unit that our own fans need to be reminded how we dominate compared to everyone else. I've never doubted our Special Teams and Defense, yet there was always that "thing" that kept us from going further.

Long story short, im admitting I was in the crowd that was calling the Ravens a Boom or Bust with the expectation of a horrible downfall followed by years of cap hell. While that's still a story to unfold....I NEVER expected this. I made an entire account, after shitting on the Ravens Boom or Bust approach to just say.....damn. They might do it.
thanks for the post but this is just the type of post that should be in the Random Thought Thread.

@RavensMania , Washington continues to prove why they're a poverty franchise. Yeah let's go ahead and target one of the worst DCs this season.

That would be a smart move from Washington. Not just MacDonald, but Hortiz has always seemed very impressive when I've heard him speak. Two big losses.

Not only that but Washington are in line to have most 2024 cap space so we can probably wave goodbye to Clowney, Madubiuke etc.

WE NEED TO WIN THIS CHIP

Honestly I think it is a terrible idea for them. They need a new QB and when you need a new QB the smart hire is a talented offensive coordinator. Unless their plan is to bring in a veteran like Cousins I just do not know why they would buck what has been shown to be a working trend in the past few years and hire an offensive minded guy to pair with a rookie contract QB.

I think having a good coach and a good QB is what's important. Lamar and Allen weren't paired with offensive coaches and they worked out. This year Bryce Young had an offensive HC and Stroud didn't.

with an organisation like that, they're looking for stability and probably thinking long-term
the benefit of doing a 1-2 of Baltimore guys is that then you're bringing instant organisational stability with how things should be done and run

Allen has worked out but the Bills have not. The Bills have been on a downward trajectory since 2020 and there is a real chance their coach is fired for failing to perform for years. Harb is kind of a weird case in that he is neither an offensive nor defensive guy. I am also not about to judge Young or Stroud after a rookie year as that tends to not end well. After all, after t heir rookie years Baker was the best player in his draft and Allen and Lamar were busts.

We've known since last year that Likely is really good. We also knew from last year and the beginning of this year, we've struggled to use Likely and Andrews simultaneously. That being said Likely performs at like 80-90% of Andrews when he's TE1. It's insane. TE factory here

McDermott isn't likely to be fired. If anything they start over at offensive coordinator in the offseason. If they win a game in the post season they may even give Brady an opportunity next season. They would need to hire a QB coach in the offseason since Brady is now doing both jobs.

I think it has a lot to do with how Monken is using him and Lamar continuing to evolve and get more used to the offense. Likely used to play WR so he's a completely different type of TE than Andrews and better outside the hashes.

That YAC ability of his....................

If McDermott loses this game, and likely the BIlls miss the playoffs, he should be fired. They goal for the team was to, if not win, at the very make the Super Bowl and they will have missed the playoffs. They had some defensive injuries but considering what everyone else had to miss the playoffs, especially when you play in the same division as the Jets and Patriots, is simply unacceptable. Going 2-2 against the two worst teams in the conference is unacceptable.

Just look at the Bills trajectory since they made the AFC Championship game. After losing to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship game, they lose to them narrowly in the divisional round in 2021. They then get stomped in the divisional round by the Bengals. You then follow it up being out of the playoffs after the team that beat you lost their QB, and one of your key division rivals lost their QB which in theory they should have no problem making the playoffs and they could not even manage that.

How many years of falling short does it take especially when this one would be the worst one of all?

It sucks losing Andrews. His experience in the playoffs would be a plus. On the other hand it’s good that Likely has gotten a chance to show what he can do. I’m sure Monken will find ways to get both on the field next year. It’s a rarity in the NFL to have 2 really good pass catching TE’s. Will be an awesome duo to attack the middle of the field next year.

I think we can judge Stroud already. (I was ready to judge him after week 1 when he looked great for his 1st game.) He's really good.
I wouldn't write Young off entirely yet but it's not looking good.

Also-

The Bills lost on a coin toss in 21 and looked great - that wasn't a downward trajectory.
No one considered Lamar a bust after 2018, even if a lot of people thought Baker looked more promising.
