The Random Thought Thread

The NFL is full of absolutely shitty teams that are all almost the same quality. Not an enormous difference between the Raiders and 49ers.

Mahomes has some BS magic constantly up his sleeve but they've had some pretty devastating injuries. This is the year to beat them.

No one and I mean no one is better than Lamar this year. Not even Mahomes. And it's not close

mahomes has not been good for a year and a half in the regular season
just decided to go crazy against the bills in the playoffs and did enough in the first half against the ravens for us to implode against that defence

like he's obviously still mahomes but he's not playing like a top 3 QB right now

The Bengals might be cooked considering it seems like their offense is now openly complaining about the defense not getting the job done. Its funny because they have 4 winnable games lined up that if their locker room was not imploding would make them an actual threat.

Last year the Chiefs lead the league in drops. This year they have a WR room that includes a player the Patriots cut (JuJu). Right now their best offensive weapon is Kelce who is far past his prime. I legitimately do not know how they managed to field such an awful WR room when just about every other team with a 50m+ QB (note Mahomes is 45m) is fielding a better one, except for MAYBE the Chargers.

sure, but no one gave lamar a pass when he was throwing to desean jackson and co.

and mahomes is making mistakes on a weekly basis, it's not just wr drops etc. he lost rashee rice to injury on an INT that was his fault

The fact that people say Justin Fields name in the same sentence as Lamar is sickening.

I've said it for years now, Mahomes is the best player in the NFL because of his post season winningness. But after Mahomes, it is Lamar at number 2 and the drop from 2 to 3 is enormous.

You can argue all you want about who 3 is and I'll say ok whatever yawn because it's boring how inconsequential that player is compared to Lamar or Mahomes.
It’s amazing people ever thought they were comparable. Fields is a fringe starter and nothing more.

Accept that a majority of fans don't know shit about ball or actually watch the games.

I'm seeing Bill fans talk about lack of weapons and drops. Seen some say you need to watch the games in defense of Allen's play. Where was this last year when complaing about a certain MVP?

To be clear my feelings on MVP last year I said Allen and CMC had a case. Hill would have been next closest. Didn't really think anyone else deserved it.

The problem I have with most people is they can't be objective.

Ah this is a case of wanting to knock someone down to build someone else up.

I would say Lamar got a pretty good pass honestly, and honestly I would say all of those teams had better weapons than the Chiefs. Just to demonstrate though if I told you a QB was MVP 4 years ago, but since then has not matched those numbers, has more turnovers, and has not been able to finish the past 2 seasons, I would assume you would say 7-9 range for a ranking is fair. That is where the lists in 2023 had him.

Now the reason Mahomes gets more leeway is because he has more accolades. He has 2 MVPs (at the time Lamar had the 1), 3 all pro selections, and, at the time, 2 Super Bowls. Basically there was a multi season sustained period of success you can point to and go “well we have all of this evidence that he is not a flash in the pan so something is wrong”.

To back up a little to demonstrate how Lamar got a lot of leeway, let’s look at Hurts. Hurts a fairly great season 2 years ago and had an amazing Super Bowl where he dueled Mahomes and after that the lists had him 2-4. Fast forward just one bad year, which to note was not as statistically bad as 2020-2022 for Lamar, and he is not in the top 10 on almost any of the lists. The big difference is that people saw the Eagles and went “with that OLine and those weapons you should be dominant if you are top 10 but you look completely mediocre.” whereas for Lamar it was “They really need to build a team around Lamar and keep him healthy”. It’s why 4 years after his breakout yearLamar was considered top 10 but only one year removed Hurts wasn’t.

That's great. Now do Burrow and Allen

he may be past his prime but he's still one of the best tight ends in the league, if not the best and he is the reason for that passing game opening up. If he doesn't play they are toast.

I’m also biased because I hate Ohio state QBs. The CFB world always tries to hype them up but, 90% are just a product of playing in a trash big ten were receivers are wide open constantly. Stroud maybe the first successful one

Sure. Allen is pretty simple (btw I am going to ignore yesterday because it is both only one game and based on the clips I Have been sent he was very clearly concussed to the point where I am stunned no one pulled him). Over the past 4 years he has lead the league in total TDs despite having an offense that is Diggs and some scrubs (random note its amazing how right now Burrow is the only one of the top 4 QBs to get any real weapons despite over QBs who are getting paid the same or more somehow also affording weapons). Note that second on that list is Mahomes and then there is a massive dropoff. Then you add in that he seems to play well in the playoffs

The biggest problem with Allen has been turnovers but it seems like since about midway through last year someone got it through his head to stop throwing INTs so much and now he, miraculously, has the longest streak in the NFL without an INT. That being said, when you have been consistently winning your division, playing well in the playoffs, staying healthy, and only losing to other top 4 QBs you again get a lot of rope. Basically again he got it because he had consistent success without injury.

Burrow has that same thing but also has one other thing going for him: he is the only QB in the past 5 years to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl not named Mahomes (also fun fact if you go back to since the Ravens won the Super Bowl you can cover those next 6 with Brady and Manning so only 4 QBs have represented the AFC in the past 11 Super Bowls). Followed it up by again having a solid season and making it to the AFC Championship game narrowly losing to the Chiefs. Having back to back successful seasons buys you a mulligan on an injury filled one. If he looks bad this year then he would likely take a similar slide to what Lamar did after missing the end of back to back seasons. However, unfortunately, if the past 2 weeks are anything to go off of that does not seem to be happening. Fortunately, the Bengals defense looks dreadful. Again though if he keeps putting 33, 34, and 38, they are probably not going to blame him for not playing defense.

A lot of people down on Orr, just like many were down on Mikey Mac at the beginning. Chances are things will work out in a similar way, they didn’t choose Zach on a whim.

It’s time to put some new bullet points under the toe drag rule. This should absolutely be a catch. This is 2 toe tap, the heel down was clearly separate from the second toe tap. I don’t see how this is any different from dragging 2 toes from inbounds to out of bounds. You can drag toes out of bounds and it’s a catch without having to lift your feet off the ground first, but falling backwards you would have to lift your feet? It doesn’t make sense, it’s a blank space in the rule book that needs filled. Based on all logic surrounding the toe drag and what can be counted as a catch, this is just an iteration of the toe drag.

Coming back to this... this is such a weird NFL year so far. We know there will likely be a team or two that does figure their shit out and vaults above the rest, but right now, there ain't much out there that scares me. Seems like a bunch of good, not great teams and a bunch of bad, not terrible teams. Anyone can win on any given week right now.

Giants just beat Seattle. For 3 years I've said the parity is crazy. But for 3 years consecutively it's gotten even more flat across the league.

If we weren't so idek what the word is, we'd be obvious favorites to win the SB
