The Random Thought Thread

Hahaha you're definitely partially right! This shit is pretty unpredictable. But this team does have a lot of needs. And we've not been able to get day 3 picks on the field as rookies. That's not an insult it's just a fact. So we're gonna have to do as well as we did in the last draft with Nate and Roger. And not bring in Eddie Jacksons

i mean not many day 3 guys play significant roles as rookies league-wide (on good teams)
but that's why you develop guys over multiple seasons because we get a lot of guys on the field in year 2-4 from day 3...

2021 Tylan Wallace, Ar'Darius Washington... was a bit of a miss with only Tylan really sticking around, but it was also widely regarded as a terrible draft class, we managed to get Ar'Darius as a udfa though

2022 Likely, Faalele, Stout, Kolar + JAD as contributors from that day 3 class

2023 Tavius Robinson and Andrew Vorhees, Keaton Mitchell - Robinson's became a significant part of the EDGE rotation and Vorhees won the start at LG to begin the season and may well get the chance to win it again this offseason too... Keaton Mitchell as a udfa too

2024 no immediate starters but a few special teams contributors and a bunch of guys who are starting to find snaps late in the season: Tez Walker and Rasheen Ali starting to get involved as depth guys on offence, Kane and Beau Brade are part of the special teams units, TJ Tampa is someone to keep an eye on in terms of development

I mean they will be fine next year. The Chiefs and Bills will likely be better but the Bengals will be worse. So the division will be softer which should help quite a bit.
The Bengals won't have Higgins, but they also may have a better defense and offensive line. You can't say the division will be softer.

Over the past 6 weeks, the Baltimore Ravens defense has produced some impressive numbers.

They have given up:

• 16 points per game

• 267 yards per game

• averaging 3.5 sacks per game

This is already a defense that has been #1 against the run practically all season (81.6 yds-pg) and is 2nd in the entire NFL in sacks (52) to the Rams.

Imo, higgins is very very important in that offense and to joe borrow. I think they will try to keep him. He will for sure leave for more money though imo

yes I agree he's very important and also agree he will leave the Bengals and may very well end up in Washington with all the money they have available to spend. That being said, I think that team may be better overall with an improved defense and offensive line. I think the division will be between the Ravens and Bengals next season.

Random stat... Steelers have 5 post season wins in the last 15 years, the Ravens have 10. Last time they met in the playoffs was the AFC Wilcard round in 2015. Ravens won 30 - 17. Looking forward to us widening that gap this year.

Anyone think Orr's insistence on cover 0 BS early on was because he simply didn't trust the secondary in the first place? So at least you've got a chance to make it easier for them with a sack or pressured throw?

Guessing this is probably true. The secondary communication/coverage was a mess and undependable.

I'm really starting to believe it with new evidence we have. There's nearly nothing similar. The personnel, the nickel and dime stuff, the man and zone stuff, the situational tendencies, and obviously the results.

Orr has legitimately been 2 men this year. 1 which I think made some poor assumptions early and 2 a guy who had the balls, humility, and smarts to make a tremendous number of changes, all of which were needed.

It’s odd. If you don’t trust the secondary you shouldn’t be calling cover 0. Maybe because we had a high dollar FS and 2 corners he felt he should be able to trust them but he didn’t trust the pass rush.

He comes from a coaching tree of manufactured pressures. If you have a strong secondary you don’t need real pass rushers because you can manufacture the pass rush with a positionless front seven.

I think it may be the opposite actually. Left them out there because he put too much trust in them based on what they did last year and thinking the switch was going to flip at some point.

Think he also expected those blitzes to get home but that was a struggle too.

Considering the defensive performance in general, I think we need to factor in not only Zach's newness in his position, but also the fact that there were also 3 new D position coaches. The squad really seems to be gelling with time.

I actually think they bring Higgins back. Might be the only thing the team has going for them so I think they keep that group together. I just think this is a pretty weak free agent class for defense overall though before you even look at the ones who will likely resign.
