Joe Flacco

True but Smith could have put up a fight to try to knock the ball over
ALL QBs throw bad passes/make bad decisions at times. Just as you said, often the difference can be the receiver turning defender. This play gets debated over and over but it was obvious that Torrey didn’t turn defender, nor did he seem aware of where he was on the field. Not one of his better moments.

He stopped on that route, too.

When any writer commentator etc says "This is the 4th ranked defense in the NFL" they are ONLY using the yards stat. When they use other stats they specify those stats but when they rank defenses at the end of the year and say who was the top ranked in the NFL they use yards. I am going to assume by your disbelief that you did not realize that but its the stat they use. Whether it is the best stat or not is open to debate but it is the stat they use.

Note how in your own post you talk about how the announcers specified "3rd down defense" or when they talk "scoring defense" or any other category but when they just say "X team has the 5th ranked defense in the NFL" the number they use for that overall ranking is yards.

they say what that rank is about.
they dont leave it at ``x team has the 5th ranked defense`` and then changes subject right away.

they say ``x team is 4th in sacks`` or ''x team has 20 INT good for 10 th in the NFL `` or `` X team leads the NFL in TO`` or `` X team is 5th best is stopping the run`` and then dive in deeper to give additional information or awnser questions based on what they just said or highlight players/situations that have something to do with what they just said.

you have to be a really bad commentator or writer when all you do is just say ``X team is ranked 4th in the NFL`` and then leave it at that and switch topics right away.......

i have yet to watch a game where the only stat that get mentioned is yards alone.
they highlight various stats to support their opinion on how good/bad an offense/defense/player is.

Yes because all those stats are not the stat they use to judge overall defense.

Are you really going to say you have never heard announcers go "This is the number 1 ranked defense in the NFL vs the number 6 ranked offense."

Or, "Today we get to watch a great defensive showdown as we watch the top 2 rated defenses in the NFL go head to head" That last one by the way is something that was said before Ravens Patriots game (then Jimmy went down and the defense fell apart).

I'm honestly blown away by how little attention you must be paying to never notice that. Tell you what I'll give you a really easy example you can look at around the NFL draft. Whenever a team goes on the clock they often like to show a graphic that is something like "20xx offense ranking: 14th 20xx defense ranking: 17th" I cant remember if they also did a graphic for special teams and I know rating special teams is a thing but I do not have the slightest clue what stats they use to rate them.

Of course people mention other stats. When you hype up a defense or are trying to talk about there faults you talk about every stat but when they say where Ravens defense overall rated they will use yards. When they talk about where Ravens defenses ranked over the years they use yards as the metric. When Pees left and they listed where his defenses ranked during his tenure as Ravens coordinator they used the overall defense which is yards.

#1 overall defense in terms of yardage is not the same as the best defense in the game.

its not that hard to understand.

team A
#1 in yards
#5 in sacks
#5 in TO
#5 in redzone
#5 on 3rd down

team B
#5 in yards
#1 in all the other stats.

No sane person will say that team is A is better.

You are not understanding what I am saying and arguing a point that does not exist.

Whether team A or team B has better D does not matter, when they list overall rankings team A will be 1 and team B will be 5. That is not a debatable point, it is not an opinion I am giving, it is a factual statement as to how they rank defenses.

I'm not talking about whether they should or not it's just a thing they do.

So...it has come to this.

three years later and no playoffs since, we have been reduced to debating our last time there. The stealers got there again and played a team tough without their top defensive player. A team they played tough that holy hammered us. Yeah......pfffft on them stealers.

how far we have fallen. how low can we go?

You mean the route Torrey Smith gave up on and cost the Ravens the game?
torrey lost interest on a ball that never should have been thrown. Hell, even Perriman can't high point a ball. I was one of the shorter receivers on the team and can't really say how many high point steals I angled over and snared from waiting defenders. Course I could jump on the run, well over the top of a BB rim.

True but Smith could have put up a fight to try to knock the ball over

Yeah he could have, on a poor decision thrown ball.

Nor JoeJoe's. but seriously, we were not going anywhere. that game was a fluke and what exposed us was Melvin.

He stopped on that route, too.

Yeah he did. Doesn't matter, we haven't been in the playoffs since and didn't deserve to be there that year either.

How sad it is to see the playoffs knowing we blew one chance to make it in the last minute no less. I feel confident we would be playing the AFC championship game against Jacksonville in Jacksonville next week and we would have beaten them as well. Just totally sucks.

Where is this overall ranking listed?
