The WR Thread

lol.. just saw there´s a huge article about Sutton on the NFL site titled: IDOL HANDS

Btw, I took all those vids with a video recording app on my mobile and I can´t upload them here from that device as it says "not the correct format".
Tried to connect it with the laptop so I could work em over here maybe, somehow.. PC doesn´t see it as an external device.
Sent them to my gf through fb so I could open them over here.. it opened fucking messenger and only a hanful of them got sent (luckly, cause I should´ve had to sell a kidney if all of them went through).. I´m asking to you guys who are most likely less inept than me with these things: what the hell should I do? it took me literally my whole last week end and more to save them and crop them one by one..

I really can´t see how Kirk would be anything more than a #3 receiver. I´ve literally never seen him taking one snap on the outside. He lacks the acceleration and he´s not even a great route runner. In a class like this, full of day 2 WRs, I fail to see any reason for him fitting within the best 5 at the position.
I'm with you him essentially being limited to being inside. I do see him gain separation with relative ease and the organization might grab him if Ridley is gone....just a sense.

Anyone else think that courtland Sutton just reeks of a ravens pick and a guy who would equate to a bust?

I really seriously worry that Ridley goes before us, and with us being so desperate for pass catchers we go ahead and take Sutton.. it feels like a ravens move.

Nah. Our pick is Washington.

I prefer Deon Cain to Sutton and Washington. I have him about even with Ridley. Cain will eventually be a top 20 pick. I was thinking trade back and pick up Cain. But that isn’t gonna be an option cuz he is gonna be a top20 pick. He has all the skills Perriman was supposed to have. Awesome speed and suddenness for such a stout WR. Could even eventually jump Ridley even. My guess is he blows up the combine and jumps Ridley. His raw skill reminds me of a Uber skilled receiver with motivation and drama probs named Koren Robinson. Maybe not quite on the same level raw skills as Robinson who was one of most gifted receivers you will ever find. But very very close. And in my opinion he will have a better career than Mike Williams.

For once we agree.

after hours and hours of finding the best programs to convert mp4 into something the forum woukd accept I came to the conclusion I'll have to use screenshots again..sadly.

However
..here we go!
it´s widespread opinion, and I´m a believer as well, that we have no clear top 10 talent at WR this year and that Ridley is going to be the first selected on April 26th.
Given these two things it´s now interesting to know what´s going on with the rest of the class: Sutton was a disappointment find in my book (Jeremiah, whom I didn´t happen to agree often with, lately) has him falling out the his top 5 wideouts as well.
Here´s one other guy who (like the aforementioned SMU) wasn´t a high level recruit, according to Rivals, and adds one massive frame into the list of prospects who are flying under the radar because of Ridley: Simmie Cobbs.

The good thing about this class is that, although there's a ton of guys worth a top 100 selection imo, they present very different styles and skills.
The bad thing is that both of the WRs I've been paying more attention to have shown hands inconsistency (in the case of Sutton it was a hands positioning/technique problem, with Cobbs I see it more like a hand-eye coordination thing).

Since I'm forced to use pics and there's only a certain amount I can post per message, I'd divide the 'report' in sections: Release, catch, block.
But let's start with order: the release.
The former Hoosier has an imposive height and you most certainly would expect him to show a below average quickness off the stand and to expose his chest to a press man corner.
At the contrary, I must admit I was quite shocked with how easy and natural he makes the mechanics look like.

Here's a thing he does quite often:

Takes an outside release
View attachment 631
steps on the corner toes (although not perfectly excecuted), now that he was committing to the outside and thus he's turned.
Meanwhile makes contact with the opponent's inside shoulder (a little weird, because usually you want to hit their elbow).
View attachment 630

Crosses his face for an immediate separation
View attachment 629

Here´s one similar situation, where he doesn´t really show much wasted motion.

shoulders on top, decisive steps toward the CB
View attachment 639

threatens the inside lane
View attachment 640

nice, wide step to change direction
View attachment 641

little swim without opening his chest too much, and most importantly claps the opponent´s forearm to prevent contact to his body
View attachment 642

reaches out for the ball for a long gain.
View attachment 643

Here´s one other thing he does to avoid contact
after taking a wide, right first step he pulls back his shoulders to get out of the CB reachView attachment 645

that´s just enough separation for the QB to hit him in stride. Pass will be a bit wide, which leads Cobbs to get back on the CB path, minimizing the separation previously created. Result is a nice 15 yd gain due to Cobb´s one hand catch (sorry, just reached the max number of files uploadable)

Despite the size, he´s a guy that moves very well and can be particularly dangerous with the ball in his hands, although I´ve noticed he slowed down a tad bit in his last year compared to his sophomore campaign. I guess he added a little bit of weight.
.. (follows)

I say that he´s dangerous after the catch because he has a very good awarness for his position on the field and understands when better to cut to make an opponent miss.

Here´s a good comeback route, where he attacks the ball really well. Good hands positioning
View attachment 647

One thing is a tackler taking a bad angle, one thing is making 2-3 jukes to force those misses
View attachment 648
View attachment 649

Ball on the outside and again, look at how he slaps the defender´s forearm.
He´s so precise, Cobbs the Surgeon :D
View attachment 650

It´s interesting because you wouldn´t think this of a big bodied guy, but he´s really good cutting in the middle. He´s not the twitchiest guy on this planet but he makes it work with technique.

Coming to his hands:
There´s some very good and some pretty bad
It´s weird how he can alternate those moments with the same ease he claps people hands.

I´ve seen him making at least 4 one hand catches and in tight coverage;
You don´t see it here but Cox has tangled Cobbs left hand, that´s why the guy is forced to make a one hand play. I initially thought he was just taking it easy or trying to make a highlight reel play, but looking at it closely it´s clear it was not intentional
View attachment 651

Again, tight coverage, nice backshoulder
View attachment 652
Good luck my Terraspin
View attachment 653

However, as I mentioned, there´s just as many wtf moments
DB slips, alone in the endzone. hands positioning is not even awkward or anything but football bounces like it would against a stone. the hands clap with bad timing.
View attachment 656
waits for the ball and lets it bounce against the numbers.
View attachment 654 View attachment 655

Having seen Sutton, I´m not particularly worried about Cobbs hands. some throws were just coming with bad poise, some were underthrown on slants.
It will possibly cost him one round but if he´s still around, coming our round 3 pic and we still need a wideout, I´m all for it.

(blocking post is coming)

About his blocking.
One can´t really say he doesn´t help the teammates.
His height is not the only thing that stands out the most to me, but the patience and persistence with which he keeps paving the lane for the ball carrier play in and play out.

View attachment 657

Approaches the defender and, knowing that the blocks are still developing behind him, waits for the right time before to launch himself into a cut block
View attachment 658

View attachment 659

Reaches the second level and waits again
View attachment 660

until engaging the DB and taking him out of play
View attachment 661

I´d say definitely worth a top 60 selection imo, but with the history of players inexplicably falling out the first round for one reason or another I don´t expect him to be as valuable as some others at 52.

After surgeon Cobbs the next coming is a guy I´m absolutely routing for tor us to pick in the second: Auden Tate, the master of jump balls

Id bet purple flock dollars ridley wont be anything special in the nfl
He wont live up to his draft slot no, he'll just probably be a solid productive #2 on a team. Hes a first round talent who will go in the top 10 because of the lack of talent at the top. He probably should go 20-32 range in any other year i would think

Jaleel Scott isnt getting nearly the hype he deserves. His tape is fantastic and shows excellent body control and flexibility for his size, also shows good footwork and nimbleness (if thats a word). He really didnt have a good senior bowl week at all but not everybody does. Really intruiged to see how he performs at the combine

This is a little writup I found on D.J. Chark On PFF

WR D.J. CHARK, LOUISIANA STATE
Chark can affect an offense in a number of ways. As a wide receiver, Chark has shown an ability to line up at multiple spots and produce. In 2017, Chark played 174 snaps at left wide receiver, 202 snaps at right wide receiver, and 143 snaps in the slot. Chark’s 2.92 yards per route run ranks No. 18 among all FBS draft-eligible wide receivers. Chark showed he is one of the premier deep threats in the draft class as he had 14 deep catches — targeted 20 or more yards downfield — which tied him at No. 8 among all FBS draft-eligible wide receivers and his 572 yards by way of deep passes ranks No. 6 among FBS draft-eligible wide receivers. Chark also boasts four career rushing touchdowns and he can be used effectively on end-arounds. Chark also returned two punts for touchdowns in 2017. Chark showcased his versatility against the top draft-eligible talent at the Senior Bowl as he caught five of seven targets for 160 yards and one touchdown, including 65 yards after the catch. Chark also forced two missed tackles as a runner and made a special-teams tackle. Chark finished the game with an 85.6 overall grade.

I think Chark was really held back due to the offense he was in. He's a guy that could fit the Ravens very well. While the WRs I want most for us are more along the lines of aggressive, physical guys that can win jump balls (Tate and Ishmael being the main ones), I'd happily take Chark as a young deep threat for Flacco's final years.

Come to think of it, Chark in the 2nd and Ishmael in 3rd comp or 4th could be a great combo for Flacco's last few years. A dynamic deep threat and a potentially great possession WR.

Shame that Ishmael wasn’t invited to the combine.

Yeah. I was really curious to see how well he'd do in some of the drills. I'm not expecting a great forty time from him, more middle of the road type numbers. But I'd really like to see his 3 cone drill and high jump.

I wouldn't mind seeing us use both our 3rds on Chark and Ishmael I'd be doing cartwheels. Chark was also a 5 star prospect with KR/PR return abilities, a deep threat, great body control and good hands imo. Reminds me of Diggs.
