2018 Free Agency

If we were willing to tank, I don't think we'd have picked up the option on Carr. In a tank scenario, we'd probably just be willing to roll the dice with Young, Canady and Hill.

Though, that doesn't mean we don't keep Maclin, but I'd be stunned. He was a total dud and I don't see why we'd want him around.

yeah we would have cut everyone we could cut - weddle would be gone, carr would be gone, maclin would be long gone, mclellan would be gone, hurst wouldnt have been re-signed, sizzle might have been gone too...

we'd have created over 30 mill cap space if we were really tanking

Couldn’t care less about “draft value”.

It’s getting increasingly more difficult to have a good Oline in the NFL. I don’t care where players “usually go”. Time to change that and actually have a strong Oline.
The one thing that will probably never change about football is that you win games and championships by winning in the trenches. After QB the oline, DL, and edge are the main positions you need to build up.

I really feel like, at best, we're going to come away with a mid-level WR like Moncrief or Lee ... and probably still lose Jensen. I think to keep Jensen, we'll end up going the route of picking up a cut WR (like Cobb or Matthews), rather than getting one of the remaining FAs. Even then, Jensen is only a maybe Jensen (depending on how crazy the offers from other teams are).

I'd be more depressed, if I didn't already expect this to be the way things would play out. The idea of getting a Landry, Robinson or Watkins was always a pipe dream.

Lol. I’ve been saying I’d be happy with Moncrief before there was even any news that the Ravens were interested. Good try though.

But sure keep clamoring for Marquise Lee who can’t even catch a football. Who’s only good for short routes. Who only has like 8 career touchdowns. Lee is one of the last guys I’d want on our team.

Let’s see how Marqise plays away from Bortles. Compare him to Moncrief this year and bookmark this thread. Moncrief can’t separate dude. Watch the plays he is and isn’t the target. A single cornerback shadows him with ease!!

again i realise im a broken record - but ive been advocating us going out and getting moncrief and another wr3 type receiver (ive always said taylor gabriel specifically but that doesnt matter so much) - and if we did go and get those 2 guys before the draft i think we've got a strong foundation to build from

the around the nfl podcast said something interesting in one of their recent podcasts - the teams that go out and get big free agents are rarely the teams that improve and go far in the playoffs (the jaguars being an exception to prove the rule) - the teams that consistently do go far are the ones that draft well and supplement their rosters with mid-level contracts for solid players (and oftentimes those contracts become very strong value contracts when inevitably 1 or 2 of those players play above their contract)

While he had his moments, irrefutable video evidence shows it was about 75% or more on dak. He didn't target him when he was wide open and his ball placement was about as bad as it gets.

Yes but it wasn’t Daks fault he can’t separate. Dez has no savvy to his game and routes. His whole game was predicated on superior athleticism and explosion. Cornerbacks were taunting Dez

dez was getting separation, dak was just missing him
and remember that dez doesnt need much separation to win as long as the ball arrives somewhere close to the right spot but the number of times in 2017 when dak forced dez to play defence was absurd (and by the way dez played defence pretty well)

I would be as cool with Brice Butler and Marqise Lee as with Robinson. I would prefer Robinson but that tandem is far cheaper with similar skill level

I actually agree with this, to an extent at least. Dez has not looked near as explosive the last 2 years. Other factors have played in but it seems that Dez has definitely taken a step back.

BULL!!

Agree and I'm really thinking we could some a bit more unconventional activity from our FO in the draft. There was a statement that they felt they may have fallen prey to what they called "group think" when it came to recent drafts.

Playmakers ... If there is a guy that is a clear playmaker, when they call your number, you get him. Playmakers exist at every position ... they just aren't as obvious. No one can tell me that Yanda isn't a playmaker. I know we need WRs desperately, but I will not be upset with any given position that we take in round 1. Who ever it is needs to be a difference maker. Period.

And he isn’t as explosive and athletic to win them contested throws

i love watching the dolphins every year at this time because they always make a name for themselves and they always get it wrong

they've created cap space by shipping off landry and cutting suh - at those 2 positions they've replaced them with rob quinn and albert wilson - now i realise they are paying them less but their roster is very demonstrably worse than it was before the start of free agency

Our Forum Mock had a much bigger influence than we all thought. Players apparently saw it on the old forum and how much we were willing to over pay, then the NFL happened to follow along and started to over pay with big contracts. Though Joe started the QB inflation on contracts, not us lol.
My 20 stars for dontari Poe broke free agency

That's true ... and that would be an accurate description of us ... but several years removed. Our mid level contracts and our drafts have left a lot to be desired.

That doesn't mean it is still not the best approach ... but whoever this mid-level FA WR we get is (or if we get multiple) ... they need to work out better than Maclin and Woodhead did.

the eagles roster was full of those contracts - and the other benefit is that they've been able to make cap space to make decent looking moves despite having the worst cap space to end the 2017 season...

but yes you're right that ultimately it comes down to picking the right players - my point is not that we cant do better but more that philosophically im not really pro-big-name or pro-big-money free agency signings even if we did have lots more cap space
