‘Wink’ is the New Defensive Coordinator

For real. Like, I hate to harp on Antwan Barnes, but the guy could pass rush and once had an 11 sack year with SD. We know he couldn't do anything else, but why not let him do the one thing he could do? We knew Paul Kruger couldn't cover and that he sometimes struggled with contain, but why not put a motor like that out there on third and long? Lordy, we know Tim Williams isn't there yet as a run stopper, but could we please let him hound quarterbacks, which is what he was put on earth to do?

We have a consistent track record of benching pass rushers who can't stop the run regardless of down, distance, and need for pass rush. This is my only real complaint of John Harbaugh-era defenses. We've had a lot of defenders who are explosive and disruptive, but we don't play them. Defense is about fucking shit up and we don't let out guys fuck shit up.

This actually concerns me a bit. Hopefully they agree on front seven philosophies but disagree strongly on the merits of press man cover 0. Lol.

The defense has been pretty great recently at fucking up our playoff chances lol

You took me back a little with Barnes. I'm pretty sure he called first bunk in Harbaugh's doghouse. Was one of my favorite players and never understood why he didn't get the PT I felt he deserved. Like you said, we never seem to try to play guys, especially rush specialists, to their strengths which seems VERY simple.

Let them hunt.

Barnes was a favorite of mine and I was mad as shit when we let him walk. Didn't we have a choice between him and McClain and we went with McClain?

“He’s long been a favorite of the players, who appreciate his direct and personable coaching style plus his ability to make a point without screaming or yelling or belittling a player,” wrote Zrebiec. “Orr … said last year that Martindale is one of the best teachers the Ravens have in the organization.”

“Martindale deserves a clean slate,” Zrebiec wrote. “He deserves to be judged on what happens with the team’s defense going forward.”

couldn't we just get rex ryan for comedy relief? at least we could look forward to that in another wasted season..

He and Kruger were bunkbed buddies in the Doghouse. Probably the founding pair.

I'm not sure we picked Jameel over Barnes as much as I think we just kinda let Barnes go. Harbaugh hated him and Jameel was just the greatest off the field guy in the franchise history. I swear to god I think Kevin Byrne has more influence on the roster than the position coaches and coordinators.

It's been a rousing endorsement of Martindale. Don't seem to remember this with Pees being promoted but I could be wrong. I like what I'm hearing though. Good teacher, aggressive, direct and personable. Not to make a comparison or to yearn pathetically for the past but Pagano was described similarly.

This is promising, I suppose.

looks like a worse version of amari cooper and that's not great value. he's also 24 by the start of the season. He just aint special at all...diggs was a better prospect in my eyes those few years ago and went in round 5.
I get where you’re coming from but you still didn’t say who you want. I’d love Nelson and I’ve been a fan of him since at least early last college football season—the one before the most recent one here—but I’m hearing he’ll be gone before we pick so not much we can do there. Who do you want at WR for us to take? We have to take someone so I’m curious to hear who you want. Yeah, sucks Ridley is an older rookie. Not as much upside or likelihood he’ll make big improvements but he may.

If wink runs more 1 gap, and simplifies the assignments for guys like Jefferson, gets better use of his talents(getting Timmy and bowser on the field and letting edge rushers edge rush), and if he has better situational play calling and doesn't put players in a position to fail(like the final play call against cinci) then I'll be happy.

I just don't see it happening though, this just REEKS of harbaughs classic more of the same mentality
Tim Williams just didn’t look good when he played. He looked lost and like the game was moving too fast for him and I think that caused him to be slow to react. Granted that’s because we wanted him to contain and cover but that’s what’s expected of an OLB here in our system due to disguises.

That's the thing, I thought we drafted him to get to the QB above and beyond anything else.

I've been reading that Wink comes from the Rex Ryan school and is aggressive

I want Mark Andrews. he's a far far better TE than there are WR's in this draft. I also like Jackson (cb) from Iowa. I'm not super sold on R.smith...he doesnt strike me as a cant miss.

you're right that he didnt consistently look great - but he absolutely flashed moments of dominant pass rush play (and the kind of edge rush play that we havent had in baltimore for a while)

there's a fun example of a great pass rush snap by timmy on my profile - i made it into a gif so others could see the play:

The fact that he wasn’t on the field every game pisses me off.

I’m hoping since Wink coached all these guys specifically he will know the strengths and weaknesses of the linebackers and use them to their strengths instead of magnifying their weaknesses.

He did though. In his VERY limited time as a pass rusher he had a few QB hits. Just got there a fraction late.

if he where late then he did not get there.

if he would have been there in time he surely would have earned more snaps.

He was rarely used in obvious passing down situations.

well he can only do 1 thing and he aint exactly an upgrade over suggs and judon at this point.
even smith offers more then him at this point.
