The Movie Thread

so there probably will be a third sicario (its already in production) but id be hesitant to expect it to be great given that the sequel made less money and cost more than the original and also was not as good

I'd whole-heartedly recommend Widows to literally anyone - it's the best film i've seen all year

I will still gladly watch the 3rd, I wonder how good we would view the second one if there was no first.

I cant wait to watch Widows, thats a lot of praise, but it seems we have the same taste

dont go into widows with any real expectations of what it is - it's not what it sells itself as in the trailers

sicario 2 was also missing the incredible cinematography of roger deakins (best director of photography working in hollywood right now - and probably has been for a long time too) which obviously makes a difference too

i dont think any scene in any sicario film will ever come close to being as good as the final scene in the initial sicario with benicio del toro and emily blunt and the piece of paper she has to sign - or the tense scene in the traffic jam at the us-mexico border

That traffic scene was intense, but for me it was when Del Toro was sitting down with the Cartel boss and his family. Intense.

that whole sequence of him working his way up the chain is stunning - the extra detail of having been shown the policeman's family life earlier in the film adds so much moral complexity to the sequence as well

a lesser director would have cut that scene and it would have meant less, a lesser director wouldnt have had him kill the cartel boss's kids on camera either

Completely agree. Gave you a weird feeling in your stomach. Not too many movies are on that level.

dammit this is really making me want to watch one of villeneuve's films right now lol - maybe sicario... but maybe arrival... i will have to think on it

if you like science-y films and also like sicario - id recommend arrival incredibly highly if you havent seen it already

ive been in a shellshocked cinema 3 times where the audience just went deathly quiet at the end of the movie and didnt move:

Spotlight - when the list of cities come up at the end
The Big Short - similarly to spotlight the true story element of the film really makes you think
Arrival - hits you so hard and beautifully that it just keeps you rooted in place

all 3 of those films are an emotional gut punch at the end for such different reasons

Love all three of them. Ex-Machina is one i always enjoy, extremely scary if you really think about it. Arrival was incredible, just how it was presented. Alien Covenant really let me down. But yea, the science stuff i love, but as long as its not too out there. Which most likely doesnt make too much sense.

i mostly understand - im a sucker for sci-fi in almost all of its forms
from its very minor sci-fiy-ness in films like The Meg (which gave me a tag-esque amount of enjoyment) to the high concept stuff like Arrival and Annihilation or the YA dystopian stuff like the hunger games etc.

but man Star Wars is and always will be my jam

2018 hasnt been a great year for sci-fi if im honest though - including the superhero fare i havent been that happy with this year's stuff - and the most forgettable star wars film they've ever made - it was just fine but added nothing to the canon or lore that was exciting (literally the exact opposite of the last jedi which will probably be the most-remembered and discussed star wars film ever made)

im hoping the end of the year helps:

Bumblebee (oddly looks great in the trailers), Mortal Engines looks like my YA jam (hopefully its more like hunger games than divergent but we'll see), Spider-Man into the spider-verse looks awesome, Alita: Battle Angel had an incredible first trailer (I hope it doesnt devolve into something generic - im hopeful but not expectant)

Sicario 2 was just a huge buildup and then like literally nothing happened lol. Felt like it ended halfway through the movie.

showing the MCU films to kids and grandkids in 20 years will be so hard to explain why the random old guy is in every single film making weird quips but seemingly playing weird characters
Indeed, but only he can make it work and boy did it work. I was already looking forward to Avengers 4, but even more so now.

First Sicario was brilliant. The 2nd one lacked and had a semi generic feel to it. The shots and portrayals in the first were great. Also as you said had a great way of building tension and setting the mood and environment.

Speaking about Disney movies, TOY STORY 4!

Oh and I'm sorry, but that Detective Pikachu looks corny.

when i saw the first couple of frames i genuinely was hoping it would be a serious kids live-action pokemon adventure lol but nope - just the next bastardisation of a kids thing for adults with probable gross out/overly explicit humour that almost certainly wont be as funny or satirical as it thinks

while TV is a writer's medium - the above is why film is still a director's medium - the way you tell a story is crucial

I could never get into Hunger Games or Maze Runner, or stuff like that because of the YA aspect. Just the immature bull-shit that goes down, like in the 100.

I cant do Star Wars man lol. I dont know why, just never could. Although i think the last one i liked, cant remember which one lol. But im guessing you have some years on me? Maybe not, cant remember from our old conversations lol. Never been a superhero movie kind of guy either, i hated Black Panther. I do like origin stories when they go back and explain things. All Christian Bale Batmans are fantastic.

I even like The Cloverfield Paradox, which many hated. Interstellar, The Martian, stuff like that im into.

Alita does look a little out there for me, but considering who is involved in it, i'll give it a chance.

Also, speaking of awesome cinematic Hold the Dark. Watch it
