Now that I've updated the depth chart more or less I'd like to say that this Chargers team is the best I've ever built. Sure, the oline still is a weakness but it's a lot better than it was last season by adding Unger. I also boosted the RB depth, adding Doug Martin as a compliment should be nothing but beneficial and provide a good tandem with Gordon, who is already a good starting RB. The WR corps did not need much work, especially if Mike Williams comes back at 100%, but adding Calvin Ridley provides the team with a very savy player who is going to be a #1 WR in the NFL on day one. He is the perfect compliment to Keenan Allen in this regard and actually compliments Mike Williams well too if he were to be healthy. That's not even accounting for Tyrell WIlliams, who is a good big play threat and #2 when he is healthy. Jordan Lasley and Bobo both have concerns, but they boost the depth of the corps and help provide the team with both a quality possesion threat if need be, and a big play deep threat in Lasley(despite his hands he had no business being there in the 7th round). Hunter Henry when healthy is also an above average TE, and Rivers always has his old friend in Antonio Gates to fall back on in the red zone as well if he so needs it. Rivers has weapons, and while the oline is not amazing, it is certainly better than what they were fielding last year. The addition of Unger and the return of Lamp should be massive boosts.
The defense is the moneymaker though. Bosa and Ingram were already a formidable pass rushing tandem, and Liuget was a quality option up the middle as well, but the team needed a boost in run defense and I did help upgrade that as well. Kyle Williams and Bennie Logan should be massive upgrades as run stuffers. Despite Williams not being what he used to be, he still is a very good run defender and can still be a decent pass rushing option up the middle as well. Pernell McPhee may only be a rotational player, but he's the kind of chess piece that Gus Bradley loves. I can stuff him in the middle in nickle situations as well as play him from the edge to help boost the run defense. Either way, he's a massive asset. Linebacking corps gets a boost with the return of Denzel Perryman, but I needed to add some more quality options. Nigel Bradham is one of the better all around LBs in the game who also excels in coverage. Since coverage LBs are a hot commodity I also took to adding Derrick Johnson. Again, he's no longer the player that he used to be, but he's still a well above average LB in coverage and an easy asset. To help out with pass rushing I brought in an old friend in Akeem Ayers. He's nothing more than a specialist but he can still help out with the pressures as a depth piece. The secondary is one of the more underrated ones in the game. Hayward is a shutdown corner, but Verett is easily a #1 CB too when he is healthy. Desmond King proved himself to be a quality option from the slot last year, and the two safeties are above average.
I've given Phillip Rivers a real team for the first time in a very long time. I really like some of the additions
