Way-Too-Early Prospect Watch: 2019

Oh sorry I didn’t see it or didn’t remember. Not a big deal sorry if it came off as rude? But yeah I absolutely agree I like Montez a lot right now. Boss would be nice and I haven’t seen enough of Allen but I like him more than the other Allen right now. This pass rusher class is stacked and I hope we take a top guy early than wait and hope we get a steal—an area where we have repeatedly missed out on top talent because of that alone.

Oh not rude at all my friend :D
Yeah I'm not in love with Josh Allen. Looks fast and even got much better in coverage this year but I'd like to know we have our back covered once Sizzle leaves. So bring in a guy with solid good measurables, who can hold the edge, and can bring some heat to the QB rather than someone very flashy but that disappears on 1st/2nd downs.
Trying to finish a few tapes and see if I can bring my takes in here. Hopefully I can post a few pics and explain without giving you guys eye cancer

jeez it keeps saying there´s problems with the upload of my screenshots. Please don´t tell me I have to start anew and make all gifs
I´ve already tried to change format (PNG to JPG) for what it matters, and size (up to 400x300) and it still wouldn´t let me do it.
Don´t tell me I´ve only wasted time :´D

ctrl+c - ctrl+v works for me
or drag the gif into the comment area
'upload a file' button is broken since the server was restored back in aug/sep - bug logged but nothing's been done about it

Wonder if Josh Jacobs declares or returns for his senior year. If we are going to take back early, I'd rather have him than Harris.

I think he can fal to us in the 3rd. If so. I rather have him in the 3rd than Harris with our first

Irv Smith is about twice the pass catcher OJ Howard was at Bama.
Nothing to do with play calls / usage / QB. Just better receiver.

shoot man, now it does work :D
ok trying to put a few things together and I´m there
I´ll likely won ´t be able to check Ferguson today, though. Just found out I had some gifs of Zach Allen somewhere already and I ´ll finish that one first for ease sake and have it finally done, too.
thanks for the tip btw ;)

Well, finally.
Of the big sample size of plays one can get of Ferrell I´ll just use a few ones to highlight what (imo) stands up the most on his tapes.
First and foremost his size is perfect for a 5t, and everyone can see that. His arms length especially stands out and he uses it perfectly when he is there with the brain.
His uses them to maintain his frame clean, keep the distance and manage to shred off the T.
This works the best against smaller LTs and those with weaker/slower punches of course.

Here vs TA&M; very good get off and uses his arms well to prevent the LT from getting into his chest.

See here against one of the very best Ts in the nation.
Here just to give a look at the arm extension

Good hands positioning and pursuit angle
upload_2018-11-18_11-15-18.png

Bench presses him, full arm extension
upload_2018-11-18_11-54-29.png

He then shreds/rips, finishes the play

See here at NCst, here´s the one initiating contact, good hands positioning. Has a strong enough punch to eventually bull rush or push pull the opponent.
upload_2018-11-18_11-19-30.png

However, despite the inside leverage he rather goes for an outside rip.
Sadly he doesn´t possess the speed, nor the bend. See how, again, his pads are too high. He ultimately doesn´t turn his hips to the QB and takes a too wide angle.
upload_2018-11-18_11-22-34.png

Here again, he starts well with his hands
upload_2018-11-18_12-42-49.png

Could easily pull him or counter/swim inside. But he often lacks a real pass rushing plan and reacts too late, losing his balance as well
upload_2018-11-18_12-45-0.png

He does have the tools, especially in the run game, defending 2 gaps, to make his presence felt.
He also has a good football QI. I´ve seen him reading well the options and dropping to the RB when smelling a screen is coming.

The stinky side of this all is his lack of speed, bend and astonishing inconsistency, all of which may dangerously hinder his ceiling.
The worst thing he does, and he does it way too frequently for a first rounder, is taking the eyes off the play.
I´m just picking one of the many examples he provides us.
Sweep left, idk what he´s even looking at. LB (#6) will come out of nowhere to make a huge play in the backfield, but that´s a bad play from our guy.

Some minutes later, same thing: strong formation, TE lined up as a FB gets outside leverage on Ferrell, as he lowers his head and loses track on the ballcarrier.
upload_2018-11-18_12-55-40.png

I honestly can´t tell how much of this is dues to his lack of concentration and attention to technique or simple playcall (maybe he was just supposed to shoot the gap?), but in case the former is correct I´m confident he can get the issue fixed.
It stinks, but he has this Taco Charlton kind of frame and he should have a decent floor in the pros.
As a pass rusher he´s really not the most creative I´ve ever seen. He can´t rely on his rip in the pros because his pads level that is often too high and pro Tackles won´t be taken off balance by his first step. He sometimes shows a well timed spin move but will definitely have to develop some real counter moves or will end up being a too predictable and inefficient QB threat.

I don´t intend by any mean state this things as if they were a football Bible.. they´re just my take on a quite hyped 4-3 DE that I expected to be a little more complete.
I welcome any critics and very willing to reevaluate my takes if someone wants to share his different (and certainly more knowledgeable) point of view on this one.
Wish a nice weekend to ya´ll

thanks for the stills etc. that's a really nice breakdown
i havent been able to dive into any tape yet for this crop of prospects but i have to say that for a guy who wants to be considered a high quality D line prospect you have to have 1 of 2 things - athleticism or polish - if he hasnt got the athleticism to get by on and he doesnt always have a rush plan or counter then there's no way he can go in the 1st round or maybe even the 2nd round

im sure my opinion will change once i start watching film but from your breakdown he strikes me as a guy who may end up being a better college player than nfl player - but well see when i get to the tape myself how i feel

Looking forward to hear what you think after watching the tapes.
As I said, I think (or maybe just hope) the consistency issue can be probably fixed.
The athletic part of it is the tricky one. He has that nice first step at times but with no speed nor bend nor low pads to finish it outside.
If he had a nice counter or swim I'd be more comfortable to get him from #15 down but I don't see the potential yet.
I'll for sure watch him times and times again before April anyways, as I'm dedicating the whole tapes time for EDs only this year

yeah i committed to watching as much tape on as many players as possible for the 2018 draft and it was really rewarding come draft day

Ahah yeah man, without tapes it wouldn't be quite the same feeling.
Just that I'll concentrate entirely on DEs/OLBs this time.. There should be depth and we have pressing need so I hope we get a nice present :D

i did something similar a couple of drafts ago and found myself a little disappointed - it helped that we had so many needs last year so i really got through a load of positions which meant i had a better understanding personally of how i comparatively valued individual players vs positional needs etc.

it allows you to build a draft board based on the players you want more than wishing for certain positions so much

You're absolutely right. Just that outside the EDs and AJ Brown/Nkeal Harry/Kyle Love/Damien Harris and Miles Sanders I really have 0 idea this time.
I'll most likely rely on your opinion guys

Emeka Emezie, WR #86 N.C. St.

Only a sophomore so he’s a 2020 guy, but holy shit kids a playmaker, check him out.

I’d agree. I would love for those guys to fall to us right now; however that may change of course as we see more of them. They are all dangerous and seem to possess what we need so they would be ideal adds for us. Then get a center like Biadasz or Gaillard would be ideal for us because I feel like they fit us the best of all centers and I like their body size. I’m not a big fan of tall centers like Jordan because I think they naturally stand too tall in their stance and I worry about that at the next level when they face guys who are better athletes. I like my C around 6-3 just like my pass rushers; although there’s always outliers of course
I don’t see biadasz as a pure power guy in the nfl, I wasn’t super impressed with what I saw from him as a mauler, but I do like his ability as an inside zone guy, seen a few blocks where he anchors down and let’s the DT in, stalls him, then gets to his side and easily shoves him aside.

I’m not really in love with any WRs in this draft. Well for the first round anyways. Sucks we don’t have a second.

i wonder if we'll see more zone concepts with lamar at qb anyway...

I think zone works very well for draw plays because you can disguise it as pass protecting with the first step or 2 if your coaches are clever enough to teach it

it also makes it easier to key on the linebacker for the zone read as well as allowing cutback lanes for the rb - makes it easier to sell play action as well
