Lamar Jackson

Sure. But you also think we'll be terrible with Huntley, and assume those picks will be used this year. Realistically, most of the picks we'll get will likely be 2024 and future draft picks, since really nobody has the draft capital for the haul he'd get to give us all 2023 picks.

So if we'll suck under Huntley and have a haul of picks, it sounds like we may not need to do that much maneuvering in the draft to get somebody we like. We'll certainly have the capital to get anybody.

Then its just a question of whether they're good or not. Maybe they'll be better, maybe they'll be worse. I don't think the fear of the unknown should drive that thought process, given that the guy we're trying to keep wasn't somebody who required a high draft pick or even a lot of capital to obtain himself.
The problem is we most likely won't be bad enough to get what we want and the picks won't be enough to move up.

Yall can bash me all yall want but Lamar is being selfish. I know some of yall say give the man what he wants but he doesn't deserve a fully guaranteed contract. Let's be real his greatest asset is his legs and how long is that going to last? Take away his legs, do you still want him?
He already looked slower last year and less elusive. His passing hasn't improved either even when he supposedly was working on his mechanics. In a what have you done for me lately league what has he done? I'm sorry but his stand with the contract is making me like him less and less as this drags on.
Lamar is being selfish . Tag him and bag him

Random thought cause I'm bored. Trade Lamar. Trade for Rodgers. All in next 2 years. His cap hit isn't crazy. Packers most likely to ship him out of conference. The compensation can't be anywhere near what we get for Lamar. We would have still have plenty of picks and the ability to fill holes at cb and wr either thru draft or trade. Most important have decent cap space and the most expensive position secured(momentarily). And I understand the baggage Rodgers comes with. Jesus I hate the early portion of the offseason.
And there no baggage with Lamar with the way these negotiations are going on ? Shit , if these reports are true , I’m liking him less and less .

Exactly. His passing ability is always buffeted by the fact that the defenses have to account for his dual-threat.

lol, sure it will. For starters, its all conjecture, because I don't know what "bad enough" means, what pick that means, or how far we'd have to move up. Particularly when I point out the list of quality QBs in this league who weren't even top 10 draft picks, meaning we wouldn't need to come up that far to begin with.

Assuming even a bare minimum of two first round picks, that means you can AT LEAST shop three first round picks in any trade up scenario. So if we, theoretically, were picking at like 15, you don't think three first rounders is enough to move up into the top 10 or even top 5 to target a QB we want?

Fully admitting that it's just a gut feeling and I wouldn't be shocked at all if it went the other way, but...

I think we're going non-exclusive tag at this point. I think they fully believe another team isn't going to come in and do fully guaranteed plus giving up the draft capital. And if they do, I think they're content to threaten to match unless trade conditions are upped beyond the two 1sts. Don't doubt they want to keep him, but I also think they're frustrated with the negotiation process and having another team do that for them has to be appealing. It's ballsy as fuck but it just makes sense to me.

Was going to post something similar. If Lamar has actually counter-offered greater than 230 guaranteed and has not been answering the phone when EDC calls, I am almost POSITIVE they go non exclusive

And even a step beyond that, if it's true, good luck getting another team to agree to a deal with him if it's that difficult. Basically a team has to give him exactly what he wants for something to happen, and I still believe that's a pipe dream as of now. Could very well be wrong but just doesn't seem like he's going to get what he wants.

In this scenario, you (1) misjudged the market and have to move on, (2) judged the market correctly but he still won't budge and you keep him on a more moderate salary cap number, or (3) you sign him to a deal because reality sets in IF the offer he wants isn't out there.

I don't know - just feeling dumb to keep him on an exclusive tag if you don't think you're going to get a deal done. Feel like the only way the exclusive makes sense at this point is if all hope is lost and trading is the only option. I don't think they're there yet but it's all gut feeling.

They just gotta paint Lamar in a bad light before making the trade. Avoid the backlash. Here comes the leaks!
I was also thinking this. Pretty convenient that it's been extremely tight lipped for years and now at the precipitous offseason all these things about Lamar are coming out.

I totally agree. The non-exclusive will precipitate the end result. Whether that be him as a Raven or on another squad.

And conceivably, you know sooner where you're at. Assuming Lamar is tagged on or before March 7th, that negotiation window opens before FA and you know teams are going to want to get that situation resolved before the go blowing their cap space elsewhere and giving the Ravens something easy to match.

So the other thing to consider... if you're going the non-exclusive route, I think you have to trade him.

Like if I'm Lamar, and you're going to fuck me out of $14M or close to it, without even a long term deal, ain't no way I'm playing for the franchise again.

I disagree. I believe they are going to do the exclusive tag and continue working with him, especially since only 32.5 m counts against the cap until 5 days prior to the draft. Gives us a bit of flexibility, but no way we let him go for only 2 first round picks.

The Browns aren't the only desperate team in the NFL. One of those teams is just south of us

That makes no sense whatsoever. The Ravens have never done business in that manner, no reason they would begin to now.

Exactly what I was thinking. It helps you start building your roster knowing your QB situation sooner. Which is good because this team his highly talented

I'm not sure why you want to paint him in a bad light (especially to make him look greedy) right before you try to drum up interest for a trade. Not sure that's going to help his trade value...

I'm not talking about slandering him. I'm talking about the leaks. Like the counter offers are above Watson. They are fully guaranteed. He's not actually even trying to negotiate.

I'm not talking about the he's not rehabbing. I think that's all BS.

The reason I think these are getting leaked is so that teams can be prepared to make their offers when the non-exclusive tag comes out.

Good enough for me is top 5 range. Usually teams in that range are targeting that position. If it comes to a bidding war it's hard to compete with a team that's ahead of you. Most don't want to trade down that far if they already have a qb and a good draft pick. I'm not saying you can't find a guy just its obviously more difficult.

...we get it

I think its the opposite. Why would you go exclusive only to trade him? Its purely for more draft comp at that point.
The only way that makes sense is if they assign a deadline of just before draft day (which is what some have suggested).

I think a non-exclusive tag means you've given up hope for a long term deal, and are just trying to mitigate the cash risk of not finding a trade partner.

I think exclusive tag means they're either close to a deal, or the FO is confident they can get to one. The non-exclusive tag means there's no common ground to be had, and its time to listen to calls.
