Lamar Jackson

Funny how Lamar was in the MVP conversation early in the year then faded . He faded because of massive injuries to the team. It's as simple as that.
Put Mahomes,Rodgers, etc behind our line as they would have gotten destroyed.

To be fair, as good as he was early in the year, he also played poorly down the stretch. No doubt the injuries exacerbated some of that play, but he was clearly struggling.

No doubt but why didn't Roma go to a quick short passing game with Lamar like he did with Huntley considering the zero blitz packages we were seeing? Roman did Lamar a disservice.

I don't think defenses are playing the same scheme against Huntley as they are Lamar.

This was a pet peeve of mine with Roman. Our O line was struggling, we had no running game, so no play action, yet he continued to try to throw deep with Lamar. He switched to the quick, short passing game with Huntley for obvious reasons, but why not adjust with Lamar getting pummeled and the long passing game not working? You’d have to go back and look at the numbers and different situations but damn it just seemed we were attempting downfield passing plays allot.

The off season begins with coaching decisions to be made, Lamar's extension, Bozeman decision and the status of injured players coming back healthy, especially the status of Stanley. A very dramatic off season to say the least.

At least we won't accuse it of being boring...

Because defenses are playing both guys differently. They aren’t stacking pressure against Huntley because they know there’s little threat of him going deep. They’re fine with giving up the quick hitters because they know we can’t run the ball with consistency either. So give up a little and force us to score. Obviously it’s working against us. Teams would not be playing Lamar the same way though.

Exactly - because all it takes is a Hollywood sluggo or double move or an Andrews deep over and suddenly that’s 40+ yards

what we are going to have to see if teams do keep giving us zero looks pre-snap is Lamar and Bateman getting on the same page and getting Lamar to give him a chance 1v1 outside on fades and backshoulders when he sees the pressure - at the moment our answer to cover-0 isn’t good because even when we go to the hot we aren’t a threat to convert because teams just clamp down on the short stuff and we haven’t proven (even with Lamar in 2021) that we can punish teams downfield for sending everyone

Yes but wouldn’t you agree that Roman should be adjusting to what the defense is doing? With Huntley he is limited in his play calling because of physical and experience limitations. He could have been mixing in more short to intermediate passing plays with Lamar, especially given the state of our O line and running game. And I think that’s the point here.

It’s not all on Roman as much as people want it to be. I still think Lamar is great but he’s been (a) working high to low on his reads and (b) holding the ball too long. Can’t always blame coaching. I think there’s room to give Lamar some quick hitters but you can’t just tear down everything you’ve been building with him. The reality is that we’re playing with a shit OL and no running game and it’s hard to get everything going with that. For as much as everyone likes the offense we’re running with Huntley, we aren’t putting up touchdowns. The offense we’re running is not good enough to do that. It’s what we’re forced into doing

tbf i do think there are some really basic things we could have/should have been doing with lamar before any of this to help create easy quick throws to sustain rhythm and get receivers in space especially because of the ineffectiveness of the running game

we've seen way too few RPOs and concepts like that to supplement the running game and keep ourselves on schedule - especially once teams started selling out and daring us to beat the blitz

Two different qbs.. what works for one may not work for the other.. just because lamar is the starter, we cant assume that he is better at everything than huntley. Huntley probably understands some things better than lamar. I could be 100% wrong and it really could be romans fault but im just saying….. however, it looks like huntley does and is ok with taking what defenses give him where lamar looks to always make the bigger play. Huntley playing time will in fact make lamar a little better. Looking from outside in is sometimes what people need.

Agreed. I just don’t like the assumption that you can just get back to basics. It’s a little deeper than that. You’re still developing Lamar and can’t throw away all you’ve been building, but you can certainly add some elements to try to get him back into a rhythm.

100% - not advocating for a complete restructure like that - just suggesting that roman should have adapted better to the talent around lamar... we've got lots of speed and weapons in the passing game and our OL was in tatters - makes sense to get the ball into the hands of the guys who can make plays with it and mitigate the impact of the poor blocking

once miami put a spanner in the works and the offence stopped working so well, that was the perfect time to add more of these elements and spread the field and go to a quicker passing game to 1) get lamar back in rhythm and comfortable 2) make it harder for teams to give us cover-0 looks (because we're not behind the chains) and 3) to create more opportunities for receivers to get YAC and make plays

but roman did the opposite - we got tighter, we reduced the numbers of guys in the routes, we relied on extra blockers and low-threat receivers in the passing game and it only helped bring more defenders into the box which made running the ball even more difficult, and made blitz disguise easier for the defence (and harder to diagnose and beat for lamar)

Atleast the vast majority of our fanbase is on board with Lamar going forward. Meanwhile Cleveland is loosing their minds over Mayfield. CBS even posted an article regarding 2022 Potential Mayfield landing spots lol. To think at the start of the year it was considered a near lock he would be getting a new contract averaging 35 million per year…..

I certainly don’t put it all on Roman. I understand that some of this is on Lamar. He is being forced to make quicker decisions because of our O line and lack of a running game, and in many cases those decisions have been wrong or he has been indecisive. What I’m suggesting is that Roman has to make adjustments to our deficiencies, and by what the defense has been giving us, by calling more plays that allow Lamar to get the ball out more quickly. Before Lamar’s ankle injury he was leading the league in sacks. That’s an indicator that plays are taking to long to develop, or Lamar is not pulling the trigger quickly enough.

It's a combo of both. As mentioned in another post, there's room to add some more of these quick passes to get Lamar into a rhythm. But we also can't ignore our reality in that we're just not good enough right now on the OL or in the RB room. You can scheme things up but defenses can adjust too and they've already shown how easy that is.

As Rossi said above, I do think Roman did fuck up in his answer to zero blitz being holding more blockers in and things like that. There's no debating that. But Lamar still needs to get out of his own head and take those opportunities when they're there instead of looking for the big hitter every time. It's just a colossal offensive failure from the coaching all the way to the players and it's not as simple as going to these sluggo type routes though. It's going to need a full reevaluation in the offseason whether that's Roman or whatever other OC.
