Lamar Jackson

The truth is that we are all victims of circumstance. When Mahommes got the contract he did, Lamar wanted it or more after 2019. Then the Watson Guarantee. The stars aligned against the Ravens, everyone called Lamar the most talented player of a generation, and signaled a talented, agent-less player to try to get what he wants on his own without any guidance but his own conscience. He's unconventional in every way... On the field and off.

What's also worrisome is the fallout of not being able to give him what he wants and being forced to send him packing, despite any capital gained in return, is that the next time the Ravens have a marquee player to sign, this is going to be the story: "Will the Ravens be Prepared to Pay __________, Unlike Lamar?" What's going to need to be required is winning a SB with what's gained to leave this cloud behind.

Credit to the NFLPA for the last CBA, where they lobbied for higher minimums (and got it) for the lower paid players. That's what they should be doing. They shouldn't be out here advising Lamar on why he should only settle for $235M instead of $190M guaranteed. Like any other sport, the top performers are going to be paid gigantic sums, and taken care of financially, regardless of the model. The NFLPAs job should be to promote the bottom making more $, not the top. The top will be taken care of.

I agree and everything they bargain for should be through the CBA. They shouldn’t be in the business of player agent. It feels like some form of tampering to me, but they have the legal right to do so. Hell player agents have to be licensed through the NFLPA. It’s a joke.

Doesn't seem Lamar wants to do the dirty work though. Which is why he doesn't have a deal.

100%. They should have crafted guaranteed contracts in the CBA. They also have the right to advise him. It's just such a shame to use our star QB like this.

Let’s assume that a team interested in Lamar sits at the lower third of the first round and they offer the 2019 NFL MVP the fully guaranteed deal that he covets. Let’s also assume the interested club includes a roster bonus in Year 1 that drives up the cap hit in 2023 to a level that is completely out of reach for the Ravens, unless they execute an extreme roster purge and convert salary of their highest paid players into bonuses to lighten the cap load in 2023.

In this scenario, the Ravens might be painted into a corner and be forced to accept the two No. 1’s – one of which may be a pick that isn’t much better, if at all, then their own pick at 22. It stands to reason that the team acquiring Lamar would improve and therefore have an even less attractive first-round pick in 2024, the present value of which could be viewed as an early second-round pick. Hardly attractive, right?”

I don't think Lamar is deciding anything, seems he's had others making decisions for him from the beginning. It sucks he got bad advice and didn't hire an agent. If he had pretty sure he would have had a lucrative contract prior to last season.

It’s a good theory but the Ravens could match and restructure that roster bonus so easily.

Not saying it doesn’t come without risks, but the Ravens are still in the drivers seat with a non-exclusive assuming they do that with the thought that no one else is doing fully guaranteed. That’s where the real risk lies.

Not sure if that would be considered a "poison pill" if you remember the Steve Hutchinson incident. I'd have to look at OTC but in reality what team can do that? We have to also look at the money each tag is. Then we can match whatever offer there is which could lead to more picks/compensation. The non-exclusive has got to be the way to go. The exclusive tag is way too burdensome.
