Lamar Jackson

The Colts signed Gardner Minshew to a 1 year contract. Sure this doesn't take them out of the Lamar contract but that's another QB signed before Lamar.

It's confusing how every new tweet or "report" will trigger another few hundred Ravens fans to say "That's it! I'm done with all this Lamar stuff. I just want it over" when only a few days ago they were praising the non-exclusive tag as a masterstroke. Let him see what his market really is etc.

Well, this is what it looks like. No news is good news from the Ravens PoV, yet every day with no news, or with speculation in place of news, seems to piss people off more.

Is it Free Agency passing by without any Ravens signings that's making people anxious? Because the Ravens were never going to be big players this year anyway and their will be plenty of low priced vets available right up until Week 1. (Not that Free Agency really matters - if the Ravens have Lamar in 23, they'll be good. If they don't have him, they'll be awful but, sadly, not quite awful enough to get a top pick. )

I'm on record of speaking a Lamar extension with the Ravens this offseason into existence. I will stand on this hill until he decides he wants to play elsewhere. I only see this tweet as an indirect way of Lamar saying he wants the fully gtd. contract. I still don't blame him for feeling that way because fuck the Browns.

As for free agency, other from HOPING we'd get Hopkins (unlikely), this free agency isn't surprising to me. Of course, there's our free agents like MP, Calais, Houston, etc. that I would like to retain for cheap.

I think 3 years 155 fully guaranteed is fair.
Yes that means they have to negotiate in 2 years again but so what? Most qb contracts have to be revisited every 2 to 3 years.
Only downside we have is less years to spread the money for salary cap purposes.

Another idea is to add void years i.e. fully guarantee 4 years but spread it across 6 years. 230m like Watson.
To limit the risk I'd increase the signing bonus to ~100m. Which means if we have to trade him in 3 years it's still manageable for the other team to absorb his contract as they don't have to account for signing bonuses and we'd be left with 40m in dead cap which isn't too bad in 3 years

I'm really going to be mad if teams are waiting until after the Draft this year to go after Lamar. Like then we should ask the NFL to change the rules and say they must give up a 1st in the year they acquire him.
The risk the Raven's are willing to take.

So in general, I agree. Its a good deal for both sides.
However, would point out the obvious... the shorter the deal, the less cap flexibility. A deal like that means Lamar is probably going to cost more than $32M this year. Could be as much as $40M if I were structuring it. So all that means is we keep Lamar, but we have even less cap resources to spend on roster upgrades. So I think a structure like that is sort of a last resort.

The void years are possible, however, most teams only like to do void years on guys that they don't anticipate being on the roster beyond that period. So like if you slap void years on it and then end up signing another extension, you're just adding dead money onto years where he's still here.

And I 100% agree that if you sign him to a 3 year extension now, we're back doing this same bullshit again in 12-18 months.

$100M signing bonus I think is excessive. People need to remember that while the signing bonus can be pro-rated for cap purposes, that's still a $100M check Steve has to right in one year for financial purposes. That's a gigantic amount of money to lay out all at once.

I didn't expect the Ravens to be active in FA to this point, BUT, I did think they'd be in on some of these mid-tier WRs (the Darius Slayton-types) and that market is starting to dry up a bit.

My best guess is they'll do very little until the Lamar situation is resolved. I think they're serious about keeping him, and may even be willing to match basically any offer. And they're just waiting to see if they get offer sheet with potential poison pills, so that they can match.

The question nobody knows is how long they're willing to wait to do that. Could only be a week or two, wait to see how teams shape up with cap space, or could stay on that course until after the draft. Who knows.

It is really just day 4-5 of FA though, so its not a huge deal.

I’ve got it, fellas. Trade Lamar to the Colts. Take that #4 and draft a RB. Install him as our new QB. Show the world what that actually looks like so that they can all feel stupid for what they’ve said over the Lamar years. We win.

We won’t actually win a game but we’ll sure show them!
