2023 WR Thread

Jayden Reed has become one of my favorites in this draft. He is so quick in his cuts, easily gets away from corners, really solid hands, great returner, and surprisingly physical for his size.

@rossihunter2 Do you have your WR list?

so I've only graded 18 guys so far but here's how those 18 guys stack so far - if a guy's name isnt listed it just means i havent graded him yet

these aren't the exact grades but rough round grades for all of the guys (if there's a break between names in the round that suggests a new tier)

RD 1:
1) JSN
2) Zay Flowers

3) Jordan Addison

RD 2:
4) Josh Downs
5) Cedric Tillman
6) Quentin Johnston

7) Kayshon Boutte
8) Jalin Hyatt

9) Marvin Mims

RD 3:
10) Xavier Hutchinson

11) Jonathan Mingo
12) Tyler Scott

RD 4:
13) Rashee Rice
14) Dontayvion Wicks

15) Tank Dell

RD 5:
16) Parker Washington

RD 6:
17) Ronnie Bell

UDFA:
18) AT Perry

as you can see, I've not done a ton of work on later round guys
also all these grades are obviously preliminary and some will change somewhat when testing comes in

I really hope there are a bunch combine based over drafts

I really hope there are a bunch combine based over drafts

We’ll see - for example, if Hutchinson runs a fast enough time, I think that absolutely moves him up a bit and maybe somewhere in R2 - likewise if he runs a 40 time that starts 4.6 that probably ends his chances of going in the first 4 rounds…

It certainly could lead to overdrafting - if rashee rice runs as fast as I think he might - he may go super high but I don’t see that speed translating to game speed and separation

Jordan Addison’s time will potentially affect his grade for me - as could JSN’s (although if he runs a super fast time I’m not sure I’ll believe it based on the tape I’ve seen)

Tillman’s 40 time though will be pretty clarifying too

Wouldn’t say that some of those guys moving up or down would be an “overdraft”/“underdraft” per se but it could in some cases for sure

And some guys need to run fast - Josh downs, tank dell etc

and quentin johnston is still an infuriating prospect that i dont know what to do with

the kind of guy who it wouldnt shock me if we drafted him at 22, and tbh i'd be buying all the way in - but in the back of my mind, would be a deep-seated fear of the bust potential

I have had these thoughts too but not to worry. I have a pretty strong suspicion he'll be the first one drafted. Waaay ahead of us.

@rossihunter2

Youre not gonna love this lol.

Downs is still weird to me. He's obviously a playmaker and shows a lot of heart, but I feel like I'm not seeing his "it". I don't see Garret Wilson or Kadarius Toney like short range crazy elusiveness. He's obviously fast but I don't think he's Hollywood fast to my eye. I also don't think he's gonna be the great vertical threat or outside versatility that Hollywood was/had in college or in the league. He's a small guy too which you always have to worry about at least a little. That being said hes got a totally different personality regarding his size compared to Hollywood. Guy is tough and does not shy away from contact.

He's obviously going to be a talented pure slot at the next level. If you're looking for a guy who will do great things on screens, quick slants, end arounds, and be a safety net in the intermediate areas I think Downs is your guy.

I like Downs but I have a second round grade on him and he would not necessarily be a favorite pick of mine.

haha why would i not love this - it's not interesting if we all see players the same way lol

in downs, i see someone with quickness and long speed with multiple gears and the ability to use tempo and burst to separate and an explosive suddenness to his footwork and change of direction - he's not polished as a route-runner for sure, and has some play-strength concerns and has not shown an ability to win outside vs press the way hollywood did when he came out - what he does have that hollywood didn't do much is that ability after the catch to make people miss in space (albeit not like Flowers does) - like that he's successful in contested catch situations even if that's not going to carry over... but he was well practiced because of the QB play he had

i definitely dont think he's limited to the safety net and manufactured production you see at all - looks to me like a vertical threat with the ability to win both vertically and horizontally with his speed and who clearly has room to get even better with someone who works with him as a route-runner

for me, as i grade him, he keeps flip-flopping between late 1st and early 2nd round grades but ultimately he's in that range for me - not necessarily someone i'd advocate for in R1 but certainly someone i dont think would be a crazy prospect at all after a trade back...

and i think where we differ is that, other than some crisper routes and a couple of inches, what does jordan addison have that puts him ahead of downs?

If it's easy for you, can you point to some examples that make you feel confident in Downs' vertical threat capabilities. I found only a few examples of him winning that way.

Addison I think is just sooo clean as a prospect. A little better size, crisper routes as you said, outside versatility, more of a vertical threat (but maybe Downs is equal).

Have you seen Addison's Pitt tape. Dude was INSANE with Pickett.

yeah ive watched a bunch of addison from multiple years at this point because he's a prospect that ive struggled with a bunch so far through the process

he's got a bunch of polish and i think it's pretty clear he won't bust... but i think his ceiling is limited by his play-strength and i think he was helped by the college hashes increasing the space he had to work with - and i see him get erased by press - he's got a couple of inches on josh downs, but i dont think he's got any weight on him and the inches only matter if you play bigger - and downs actually makes plays in contested situations

ill see if i can find some clips of downs winning vertically for you - some of the games with sam howell in 2021 were a bit better in terms of deep shots - the virginia game in 2021 has one of the best catches of any of the WRs in the class

i think Addison's got more polish but i think they're somewhat similar but Downs plays bigger (despite being smaller) and we'll see when testing comes out but i think Downs should be faster and measure more explosively too - and it's not like Downs is a dunce with route running - he doesnt have much refinement but he's already got a real feeling for playing in the blind spot

i think the more i watch everyone though, it becomes clearer and clearer to me, that in my opinion, JSN and Zay Flowers clear everyone else
