The 2023 Offseason Thread

There is not enough cap space to get both Lamar and Hop. That is an either or scenario.
If Lamar is extended, we can afford Hop

I'm gonna trust this pick for OC, not that I know that much about him other than the Brownies 2019 gig and the Georgia stint. I love that he works with what he has rather than asking players to work a scheme. That alone has me interested. But I can't help but ask, is everyone ready for a QB competition at training camp between Huntley and Mayfield? I just have a strange feeling... with only having 5 picks and all and how they nailed last year's draft, I mean.

I would be fine if we don’t even go after Huntley in a resign. Wouldn’t blink an eye

If the Ravens sign Lamar the cap hit is not likely to be that much lower than the franchise considering that the tag is about 31m and he would be getting 50m AAV. You do not want to exactly lower the cap hit down to 10m unless you really wanna go all in next year.

I suspect the first year would be much lower just like most of the QB contracts that have come out recently.

If he signs extension, his cap hit will be in the $20-30M range this year.

They'll likely structure in a way that it'll get progressively bigger, and yes, it'll probably be $60-70M by the 4th or 5th year. But by that point, the cap will also be north of $300M, and when the cap hit gets large, you'll look to extend again (if he's playing well) or just take the hit for a year during a rebuild and move on.

Note that if his cap hit was, say, $25M this year, Ravens will have the ability to create another $10-15M in cap space just through easy roster cuts or extensions, AND, they could still create plenty of space through restructures. So basically, they could literally afford anybody they wanted to in FA, because nobody they would sign or trade for (even a high end WR) is going to cost $25-30M against the cap in year 1.

Extension opens up everything. Franchise tag limits everything.

Um which ones? This was the first year of Mahomes contract and he was 35m cap hit. Dak who had a 40m contract had a 20m cap hit. Rodgers was 50m and 28 (so basically the tag). Allen's does not start until this year and his is 35 on 43 AAV. I think the only team to try and make the cap hit was small as possible was the Browns and imitating the Browns seems like a stupid idea considering the Browns are champions when it comes to snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
