From a "whether he's coaching the team or not" aspects, its semantics. The "option" means it's up to the Ravens whether he will be back or not. If they want him back, he will be (unless he wants to leave). If they don't, he's not.

Without knowing the details, the "option" is basically a way for Steve to not pay him if they depart. An option means the team has the right to pay him $3.5M to coach again. If they decline it, they'll likely owe him nothing.

If it wasn't an "option" and just one year remaining on the deal, they'd likely have to pay him if they fired him. Much in the same way coaches are paid all the time even after they've been fired.

So its semantics to the fans, but probably not semantics to the Owner, who cuts the checks. I'm sure he'd like to be able to terminate a guy and not pay him, as oppose to paying him $3.5M to leave.

I mean yeah I don’t think anyone’s debating that. It’s just that him being under contract vs. on an option is going to have no bearing on them moving on or not, assuming they want to of course.

I agree with this take. GRo isn’t that bad. Regular season, we will win games with him. If our goal is to just make it to the big dance and get a “anything can happen” lotto ticket… then GRo is fine.

But if we want to be a power player in the big dance and favorites to win it, we gotta move on from him.

I want Lamar and this team to be exciting to watch again. Last 2 years has been a drag. I’m ready for a fresh start

So here's my thing...
I'd like to see a year of Roman with better playmakers on offense. That, to me, is ideal. After that, it may become clearer whether its a coaching vs personnel issue.

The problem is... I don't think a mass influx of weapons is coming this year. Franchise tag is going to be pretty limiting to what the Ravens can do this offseason. If they add even one decent WR all offseason, that would probably be a lot.

And the worst case scenario is we run it back with largely the same unit in terms of QBs, coaches, and weapons.

So I think the most "convenient" solution to shake up the offense is to bring in a new OC.

especially as... if we're keeping him, we're gonna be tacking on an extra year (or another option for 2024) to that contract anyway

ravens never let assistants go into a year without a deal for the year after

im not sure it's even that

for me it's that his offence requires very specific personnel to work and if you dont have all those parts, it becomes what we saw to end this year

ironically i think the ceiling on the Roman offence is about as high as any offence with Lamar could be - it's just that we only hit that ceiling when lamar's playing like superman with a good supporting cast

i think what we're looking for is someone to build an offence that has a sustainable passing game element to it even when parts are missing or lamar's not playing hero ball

harbs hasnt been that kind of coach for many many years

nobody who's played for harbs after the superbowl run has ever said anything like this about harbs lol

it's well documented that he started off trying to be a disciplinarian, came to a compromise with senior players after significant challenges in the locker room with power dynamics and ever since has adjusted his approach (and even more with every passing year)

This is more about Harbs than Lamar but why didn’t Harbs shoot down the theory that Lamar was holding out because of the contract situation ?
Harbaugh’s body language implied he was pissed .
That led to speculation that Lamar was holding out which Harbaugh should have nipped in the bud but didn’t . Why ?

Hopefully the Lamar contract situation gets resolved soon . Either tag him and bag him or get the damn deal done

I'd be pissed too if all the media did was ask me the same question every single day. The media has a hand in creating rifts where none existed to begin with
