The 2023 Offseason Thread

The one thing I like about the potential of Canales getting the OC job is that he comes from a balanced approach, but one that can lean one way or the other pending the circumstances. One that wants to run the ball but if it's not getting the job done, turn around and light them up through the air. Mostly 11 personnel with a secondary focus on 12 personnel.

Apparently, when he was a college player he used to drive 100s of miles after games to "lead the worship" at his church. Harbaugh will eat that up - he seems more passionate about religion than about football these days.
Oh no

So looks like the 3 favourites right now that we’ve heard about 2nd interviews or further interest:

Dave canales
Todd monken
Eric bieniemy

Think I’d be happy with any of those 3
Admittedly I don't know a ton about Monken, other than his offenses at GA have been very good, but doesn't he utilize TEs in the passing game quite a bit in his schemes?
Not necessarily saying that's a bad thing, given our TE room looks a hell of a lot better than our WR room at the moment, but I would think that would turn off the crowd that wants to see less 12 or 22 personnel groupings and see more 11 personnel groupings.

Exactly my thought process

That would be a lateral move for Canales then. Not sure why he'd do that.

Well for one it's more money, if he ends up helping Lamar Jackson transform his game then that's more coaching opportunities for another team as OC, and again more money. He's been coaching with the Seahawks for quite sometime he may want to branch off to see if getting with another team can further advance his career. Him legit being like The Raven passing game coordinator and The Ravens passing game jumps off then that would do wonders for his resume.

If I was The Ravens I would hire Todd Monken and Dave Canales. Make Monken the OC and Canales the QB coach/passing game coordinator maybe even add Assistant head coach to his title as well then call it a day
No, if we would do that then make EB OC and Canales do what you said

Doesn't turn me off one bit. I just want to see better routes from our WRs and more spacing, which his offense does have. I agree with Rossi that my top choices are Bieniemy, Canales and Monken and in no particular order.

1. We don't know that it's more $. It might be, but he's interviewing for OC jobs, not the job he has.
2. Me personally... I think being able to elevate Geno Smith over multiple years is a bigger feather in his cap than making Lamar Jackson look good (who's already won an MVP without him).
If he doesn't get an OC gig this year, and he stays in Seattle for another year, and Geno thrives like he did this past season, he'll 100% get an OC job next year.

Would also say that Shane Waldron will likely get some mild interest for HC gigs in the future, including possibly with Seattle itself, given that Pete Carroll is one of the oldest coaches in the league (may actually be the oldest... can't remember).

If I'm him, I'm not moving for a lateral move, and I'm definitely not moving for a lateral move under a new OC.

I still like Slowik, but I would be fine with everyone here. Imagine the Ravens just turn around an say "we're hiring Terell Suggs"

Have no issue with the list. Just pointing out complaints I've seen.
Canales seems to be the only guy I haven't really heard negatives about.

Will be interesting what happens in the next week or so. Given we're on second interviews, would think we're pretty damn close to hiring. But if we're really waiting on EB, then obviously it'll be another 10+ days to interview him once or twice.

If Harbaugh plays the crony game yet again and hires Brent Urban as OC, this may very well be his final year as HC of the Ravens IMO. He must hire from outside the organization, similar to MacDonald, a young, smart OC that is willing to try new things and be bold. We need change. None of the existing offensive staff did much to help Lamar. The fact that Lamar went outside last year to hire a personal QB coach should inform us a lot.

I agree, feel we are very close in the process. Depends on where EB is on their list. It's possible he has already had one interview that we haven't heard about.

Looks like top 3 for sure.

Don’t know much about Canales. Are we the only one interviewing him for the OC position?

Not saying he should be the guy but he’s notably adjusted his approach in all his stops - Georgia he adjusted to run the ball more and use those TEs because they had 3 stud TEs and lots of good RBs

But in the NFL he’s run lots of more open personnel and formations

Seems adaptable to personnel
