FS and SS are so fluid now that im not really worried about it in that sense - jefferson has been labelled as a box safety and is definitely effective when he's close to the LoS but he spent way more of his time in coverage and outside the box last year than inside - albeit its all a bit of a misnomer with the ravens where almost everyone lines up close to the LoS on a lot of obvious passing downs with the way we run that dime defence
im not worried about jefferson in that sense but im worried about the loss of adaptive on field playcalling and the loss of basically all our onfield communicators in 1 year
the main person i see who kind of moved around a lot making calls and adjustments pre-snap that we still have is anthony levine but you cant have a dimebacker calling your defence
For sure, I guess I should clarify on the FS/SS thing there - Despite his loss of speed, Weddle still had somewhat impressive range out there, whereas I'm not sure Jefferson can fully match up to that. Weddle just seemed to glide where he was going, and I'm sure a lot of that had to do solely with his intelligence. However, he was also a step late at times, so while I expect a drop-off, I don't think it will be egregious in that sense alone.
It's all about those adjustments though, and I think that's going to be the hardest thing. I think you almost have to let Jefferson step into that role for the secondary (and he did it a bit in AZ), but it'd be foolish to think we'll be able to replicate exactly what we had last year. I just think the talent we have in the secondary will minimize that drop-off and keep us competitive.
If you had to force me to add one maybe overpriced vet though, I'm investing in a LB. We absolutely need someone there to call the defense and I'm not a fan of the in house options. Peanut and Young are definitely better suited to WLB rather than MLB.
