Free Agency 2019

FS and SS are so fluid now that im not really worried about it in that sense - jefferson has been labelled as a box safety and is definitely effective when he's close to the LoS but he spent way more of his time in coverage and outside the box last year than inside - albeit its all a bit of a misnomer with the ravens where almost everyone lines up close to the LoS on a lot of obvious passing downs with the way we run that dime defence

im not worried about jefferson in that sense but im worried about the loss of adaptive on field playcalling and the loss of basically all our onfield communicators in 1 year

the main person i see who kind of moved around a lot making calls and adjustments pre-snap that we still have is anthony levine but you cant have a dimebacker calling your defence

For sure, I guess I should clarify on the FS/SS thing there - Despite his loss of speed, Weddle still had somewhat impressive range out there, whereas I'm not sure Jefferson can fully match up to that. Weddle just seemed to glide where he was going, and I'm sure a lot of that had to do solely with his intelligence. However, he was also a step late at times, so while I expect a drop-off, I don't think it will be egregious in that sense alone.

It's all about those adjustments though, and I think that's going to be the hardest thing. I think you almost have to let Jefferson step into that role for the secondary (and he did it a bit in AZ), but it'd be foolish to think we'll be able to replicate exactly what we had last year. I just think the talent we have in the secondary will minimize that drop-off and keep us competitive.

If you had to force me to add one maybe overpriced vet though, I'm investing in a LB. We absolutely need someone there to call the defense and I'm not a fan of the in house options. Peanut and Young are definitely better suited to WLB rather than MLB.

weddle i think had the illusion of range because he knew where the ball was going - he and CJ were so good at diagnosing the play pre-snap and putting guys (and themselves) in position to make plays and fire through gaps or get in the lane of the quick read/first read because they knew what the offence was doing before the ball was snapped...

obviously that's a valuable skill but it's probably also why weddle didnt get any picks or many passes defenced last year

in terms of LB - sure that'd be great but i dont see anyone on the market who i think is a significant upgrade on what we have - and certainly not someone who has the pedigree of guys we've brought in before to call the defence - im tempted to want to let a combination of TJ and Kenny call the defence - see if we can nail on a defensive playcaller for the next 3 years at least in Kenny - now that CJ's gone I'd rather we blood our own guys at the position that sign a stop gap because there's no real long-term options in free agency and this defence will be so much more efficient with wink at the helm if we have consistent communication across seasons

i am glad though that guys like TJ and Clark and Elliott (and even Levine) got 2 years of weddle and seeing and learning from him and in TJ's case being best friends with him and how that improves the way they might call the defence or adjust on field - likewise Kenny Young and peanut got to see CJ do all that stuff and even tell them where the ball was going pre-snap too

this is how crazy free agency has been already - we've got 31 comp pick eligible player contracts before free agency even technically starts
obviously these cut offs and boundaries are not official (and wont ever be) but if anything i think the 3rd rounder cutoff might be too high given the boundary increase between 2017-18 - either way it affects us not at all because CJ and ZDS got monster contracts and unless we go big on a UFA who wasn't a cap casualty those 3rds are likely nailed on

if we do get ingram (if that's actually happening), ideally he would come in below 8m to preserve the likely 4th rounder we'd get for john brown too

We are gearing up for the 2020 class which is supposed to be as lush as the amazon rain Forrest.

We might have a top 10 pick and dominate capital

Lmao, gutted.
You never liked ZDS, Weddle and Suggs are 70 years old and you wouldn't have paid CJ more than $12m.
Plus, fucking FA hasn't even started yet.
Seriously.

It's frustrating to watch people say stuff like "So much for that #1 defense." It's not like we lost Humphrey, Judon, Young, and Jimmy smith. he only huge loss was Mosely.

the biggest loss out of everything isnt even the talent per se but the iq and the playcalling - that's the fundamental loss for this defence next year - i mean mosley was awesome and that's a huge loss

my worry is that we have nothing at edge rusher unless Harbs finally lets us just roll with Tyus and Timmy and let them succeed or flame out as is - i was so mad at the end of last year that timmy wasnt even active on gamedays after how promising he looked early in the year pre-injury

Not to spread rumors or anything, but I know someone that knows Tim pretty well and he was inactive for more than just on field reasons. I'll keep it simple and says he needs to get his shit straight. Nothing egregious, but just not acting like a professional.

Someone needs to grab Timmy the heart of a lion so that he'll never come off the field.

Why haven't we signed Justin Houston yet? Stop talking to Ingram and make it happen, Eric!
