You only don't get the chance to win if your defense fails. Simple as that. All your defense has to do is stop the other team from getting a touchdown and you get your chance. Again, the coin toss only decides it if your defense fails to prevent a touchdown. Seriously, that's it. Just keep the other team out of the endzone and your offense has a chance to win the game.
 
Maybe this is what was needed. The Patriots dynasty started against the Rams. So it has to be the Rams to end it.

I mentioned this after the NFCCG. Love the Patriots or hate them (and I think nearly all of us come on the same side of that equation) they've arguably been the single biggest part of the NFL story for the better part of 20 years.

There'd be something kinda perfect about the reigning juggernaut Brady retiring after losing the Super Bowl to a young Rams QB and bringing everything full circle. It'd almost feel like Darth Vader bringing balance to the force at the end of Episode 6 haha.

It definitely shouldn't but if the Chiefs had a defense, it wouldn't come to the toss at all.
 
The average score for the Chiefs in their losses this year was 36 points. That's how trash their defense is. They can put up nearly forty and still lose.

Right, and the other team which won the toss doesn’t have to make a stop to get the chance to win. How is that fair? To be a fair competition each team should get an equal chance no matter who’s wins the toss. The way that 4th quarter was going it was fairly obvious whoever won the coin toss was going to win the game. A game of that magnitude should not be determined by a coin toss.

The current systems rewards you for playing defense. It favors balanced teams, it's your problem if you can't stop an offense when it matters.
What format do you suggest? A sudden death format with teams getting the ball @ the 50 yard line?

Yeah thats the Chiefs' Achilles Heel.If they had half of our D they would win it all.

How does it favor balanced teams? You’re only looking at it from the viewpoint of losing the toss. If you win the toss you can score a TD and never have to put your defense on the field. In theory that team’s defense could watch from the locker room. lol Obviously winning the toss provides for a distinct advantage.

I think some variant of the NCAA format could work.

It rewards balanced teams because then you don't have to worry if it's your defense or offense out there. Either way you have a real chance. If your defense sucks (like the Chiefs) then losing the toss means you're screwed. And if your offense is bad you're probably just going to fail to score and have to punt it away.

It's fair because they still have to score. It's not like the TD is just handed to them. They still have to go out and make plays, plays that your team can stop.

Yeah, no I don’t agree at all. If the Chiefs had won the toss you don’t think they would have had a better chance of winning? The coin toss has too much bearing on the outcome and the rules need to change.

Who knows the Patriots might have held the Chiefs to a FG. The Chiefs had a chance to stop them at the Patriots 35 & own 45 and another 3rd down in their own territory. More than enough chances to prevent the Patriots from scoring a TD. Make a play on defense and win with either a FG or TD.
