The Offseason Thread

I think CJ gone. Look no further than guys like McPhee, Kruger and Ellerbe. Cap wasn't in the best spot, but THOSE guys got PAID. Trying to retain CJ and letting him test FA was dangerous.
I'm so torn. The moment I saw that we weren't using the tag on him, my instant reaction was like "Yep. He's gone." However, DeCosta still has a week to make the deal and I'm certain that he isn't going to just let him go.

NO WAY IN HELL he's a Raven next season if he hits free agency. If by some miracle, he remains a Raven after hitting free agency, I'm censoring my name (if it's possible) on some J***n L* C*****a shit.

he was never going to be tagged let's be real - the tag deadline going by basically changed nothing except alerting national media to the fact that he was closer to free agency

and honestly at this point if we do re-sign him it's most likely after he gets to test free agency anyway

and when you say hit free agency do you mean hit the legal tampering period or the official opening of free agency?

Official opening

Yeah if the browns land Beckham were fucked lol. We likely lose jimmy(I say lose because it’s a net loss in my book) and I’m sure they can scheme Beckham on Carr easily, I like Carr but that’s not the guy I want covering Beckham. We need to go after HHCD if the browns are making this kinda move.

Yeah I thought a lot of this was pretty interesting. From DeCosta's perspective, he had basically an entire year to think about what he wants to do, and it seems like this was a decision made a long time ago. It's a tough position to be in. Weddle is a really good player (even with him losing a step) and played a big part in our defense, but he's also 34. I'm not so sure it had to do as much with his play as it is just getting younger for the new wave of this team. As much as I like Weddle, I'm glad that door is seemingly closed though, because I do think it's time to usher in a new era.

I'm really curious to see what the "other plans" are.
I think it fits into the overarching plan they have for the Ravens. Get young, fast and furious. They're all in on that strategy and I'm sure this was discussed and agreed upon by Bisciotti in Jupiter. Everything so far has indicated that Eric is a risk taker and believes in home grown talent and locking them up early thereby saving money and managing the cap adroitly.

Presser at 11 tomorrow to announce a player has been re-signed. No word on who yet.

having a hard time thinking who else it would be given that the announcement i saw was very specific about it being a re-signing rather than a signing...

gotta be CJ or Sizzle methinks

One of those 2 or Za’Darius are the only guys I could see getting a legit presser.

Unless they feel RG3 is worthy lol

You all keep sleeping on the Browns. No one can tell me they shouldn't be favorites to win the division now. @allblackraven I think they're trying to make that move too. Wouldn't surprise me if they went after Brown either. Hurt two teams in the division and strengthen yours while getting info.
Trust im def not sleeping on them.. wasnt last season when everyone was and def not this season

Njoku, Calloway and Higgins. Hunt and Chubb in the backfield. GODDAM that's a disgusting offense, if that move's made. Hell, it's still good without him. If they land Beckham or AB we're in serious shit if we don't grab one of these FA S.
We are fucked long as baker continues to develop

i dont think its ZDS - ive seen no reports we've even negotiated with him - and with all the franchise tags he's one of the top 2-3 edge free agents on the market - no way he wouldnt try free agency first - he might get 12m/yr on the open market...

Harbaugh is going to be at the presser too tomorrow. I hope it is CJ and we end all the hopes of other fans who wanted their team to sign him. Could be Suggs too but I'm really hoping it's Mosley.

I would say its a lock to be Suggs but I feel its Mosley. You hold one for Suggs to show he will retire a raven but you could have one for Mosley to show he's the future. Will be interesting to see what happens as I fail my Calc test at the time of the conference.

The fact that this happened literally just before midnight and the presser is less than 24 hours after the announcement suggests to me it's someone for whom the contract was urgent and came together quickly... the language is interesting also - i already picked up that it's one of our own guys because it specifically says re-signing not signing but re-signing also means its a free agent and not anyone like Stanley or Judon etc. who have time left on their deals (that would be an extension) - also interestingly the tavon young extension got revealed before the presser was announced albeit i think the reveal came from insiders reporting on that extension so i dont know if that sets any sort of precedent here

sizzle doesn't really fit the profile of someone who needs a deal to come together super quickly
ZDS might but i dont see how he wouldnt test free agency in his situation - there's no way we make a competitive offer vs what the market will give him

which leaves a couple of options (in what i think is likeliness order):
  1. CJ Mosley (i think this is most likely but im always nervous until this sort of stuff is official)
  2. Nick Boyle (the timing and quickness of the contract could be related to the Dwayne Allen visit and Boyle realising he can't hold out and test free agency and still have us waiting for him to come back if there's no better offers out there
  3. John Brown (it's been quiet on this front but DeCosta did specifically say earlier in the offseason he was a guy we'd like back)
you dont hold pressers for resignings that are only staying on short term contracts - so im pretty sure it isnt anyone like brent urban or RGIII

but i do feel like CJ and Sizzle are the only "press conference" guys we have unsigned, maybe john brown too depending on length of the deal he might get...

watch the ravens front office troll us with a re-signing of Ty Montgomery

EDIT: also important to note we know that CJ's in Baltimore at the moment and also we know he's fine being up late at night lol

I feel like if it was anyone other than the big 3 free agents (i.e. Mosley, Suggs and ZDS) we would know the name already

I'm terrified about the horrible contract we'd be giving CJ if it is him tomorrow. I won't be excited one bit I feel.

Ok so completely unconfirmed and probably completely wrong but just saw on twitter someone saying it’s CJ 4 years 53m 38 guaranteed

The only reason I mention it is because that feels in line with what I would have predicted a few months ago and feels reasonable for both sides to have agreed to that
