The Lamar, the Receivers, and the Pass Defence

Harbs at his presser talking about the defensive issues and i think he's right

most of the big completions yesterday were on over routes working through zones where we had some issues that just needed to be played better

and if you can eliminate those plays then the defensive performance looked a whole lot better
Marcus Williams doing very badly, basically

It’s why Lamar needs to win a Super Bowl so we can finally have nothing left for these morons to say. Idc what they have to say after that, I already think Lamar has been better than Mahomes for 2 seasons now but I will shout it from the mountains if he wins that Super Bowl.
I'm convinced he won't receive credit for it. They will continue to move the goal posts.

When things get straightened out I think we'll learn it had less to do with scheme and everything to do with player execution/communication.
The safeties are definitely having a really hard time with their assignments.

However…

The scheme is what has Brandon Stephens overmatched against high end WRs so often. He can stick to guys, but elite catchers with crazy body control make catches on him, and offenses are isolating their elite catchers wherever Stephens is covering, and throwing that way, and it’s working over and over again.

That is a scheme adjustment that needs to be made. When we face one of these receivers we gotta find a way to get Stephens out of that isolation and against guys that won’t keep victimizing him like this. When the offensive design becomes “get Stephens 1v1 with WR1 and throw the ball” and it works every time, you gotta make an adjustment.

All season I’ve been saying Stephens is playing the catch point very well it’s just been bad luck, but at this point idk man, doesn’t seem like he’s just gonna suddenly have his luck swing the other way.

As long as he plays an average Lamar game and we win well know the deal of the team can get one.

Nah it’ll be just like when the defense got all the praise from non-ravens fans for his all time SB run
I recently had this discussion with someone and they just tried to act like 11 tds no ints in the playoffs was carried by defense. Can tell who actually watches games. Also the gauntlet we went thru. That's a top 5 playoff run to me as far as level of difficulty.

That Peyton manning broncos team was a juggernaut nobody thought could be beat. And that was absolute prime Brady offensive era. We had no business winning those 2 games but we did

It's like people WANT Lamar to have a subpar or mid performance just so they can shit on him afterwards. It'd be more understandable if Lamar was arrogant or he was a piece of shit off the field but this is FAR from the case.

It's honestly amazing how quickly they diminish his performance any chance they get.

people legit still cant get over the fact that they were wrong about him

having watched the tape that's where im at with the mistakes

that being said, we're playing a bunch more cover 1 this year and also doing a bunch more zero blitzing and man coverage behind it which is really putting pressure on the DBs to be perfect

Harbs even basically said today that we're not in the business of protecting our CBs the way much of the rest of the league are with cover 2

i still think there's more we can do with the front 7 to make the pressure and intermediate and middle of the field coverages more effective and to muddy the coverage look post-snap

We’re also using Hamilton differently it seems, he was elite in eating up space in the passing lanes as a nickel defender, and it really affected what offenses could do against us, and I feel like his role has changed quite a bit from that to being more of a dimebacker

I don’t watch all 22 so I could be totally wrong but that’s something I feel like I’m seeing in real time

definitely part of it
humphrey's playing more nickel (partly why he's been so impactful and had such a good start to the season) which has put Hamilton into more of that dime role or a more traditional safety role

that's been their way to try and get the best 5 (or 6) DBs on the field as much as possible for the situation but it definitely does feel like you maybe lose some of the benefit of hamilton's elite nickel skillset

This is fking crazy lol. This is something the commanders went over in the film room too i get what they tried to do but dam
That must be what sex looks like

So my question would be, why can’t we kick Humphrey outside, let Hamilton play nickel, and have Trenton Simpson out there with ro? You get your 5 best DBs on the field and you keep your literal best player in his best position where he impacts the game more than any defender on our team. Are they protecting Trenton Simpson? I haven’t seen him struggle in coverage, in fact I’ve seen him make plays in coverage and it almost appears to me that he’d be an ideal backer for nickel, he’s got range to cover, he’s got length, and really strong pass rush ability from off-the-ball.

This is just fucking with the program, it was supposed to be an extension of what we got from Macdonald but this one aspect feels like a big blunder to me.

Switch from cover 1 to cover 2-man. Man corners with shells, you can vary the front seven to cover under or pass rush however you want, but it will leave you a lot less exposed like when Wiggins got the PI.

What a reasonable take. Especially considering if you can get Stephens on a WR2 or WR3 he probably erases them. His style is good for pretty much any not top 15 WR. But due to his inability to turn his head and really make strong plays on the ball, top WRs just have their way against him.

Marcus Williams doing very badly, basically

without seeing the all-22 yet and not knowing the specific coverages until i see it, i cant say for sure, but it's possible that might be in his area that those guys are coming loose

the swing to ekeler on 3rd and 2 looks like Van Noy messed up and didnt carry Ekeler in coverage

Can't see on the broadcast copy what happened on the Noah Brown over route at the beginning of the 3rd quarter - looks like some issues with some man-match zone communication/responsibilities and without the all-22 i could not tell you who's fault it was... maybe stephens, maybe jackson, maybe williams

likewise, can't see who's at fault on the ertz over route near the end of the 3rd quarter, think it might be williams with the way nate wiggins plays the leverage - or alternatively it's just straight up man coverage and it's on nate who has an almost impossible job to defend that crosser (but he should have safety help i think in that case too

those were the 3 plays i could find quickly

clearly the commanders saw those issues on tape during the 1st half because they went after us on those over routes multiple times in the 2nd half and hit them a few times

But why are we not in the business of doing what the best defenses in the league are doing? There's not a position group on D we don't have the personnel to win with.
