The Lamar, the Defence, and the Injury

Could this have been a holding call? Sure, but this is some of the most bitchmade shit I've seen. Out here with an Oscar-winning performance with that flop. The amount of incessant bitching after the calls from the Bengals pass-catchers was embarrassing to watch.

There was an offensive holding call on that play as well.

Marlon is really strongly touting the players are just fucking it up really bad. If that's the case, then coaching needs to remove those guys and give someone else a try.

And at the same time from the scheme perspective, what's the point of playing zone? You do that to not give up explosives. Well if you're playing zone and still giving up explosives, why not just play man?

Regarding the pass rush, I think we now have proof that it works as long as Jones is healthy. Without him, it turns into absolute crap when opponent double 92. This game, Burrow was harassed all the time and if the secondary could cover just a tiny bit, this would have looked a lot better

The amount of Oline penalties is beyond silly. These guys need to run laps more often. But at least, we do not get 3 illegal formation calls like the last few years

I don't get the venom against Smith, he might not be all-pro level this year, but try running against him. I would like to see Hamilton get the green dot next year to allow flexibility on obvious passing downs though.

Regarding Stephens at S: why not, then he has his head towards the play and can't lose the ball like at CB

They tried that with Williams and it turns out the backups are somehow worse. The entire defensive problem comes down to 3 players not being able to cover. Marcus Williams just seemingly has no idea where to be on the field at any given time. The exemplar of this was on the deep to pass, to I believe Chase, where Stephens is, shockingly, in the correct position covering the underneath and Williams sees this and goes "I will also cover the short pass as there is no way Chase would go deep" and then a big play is immediately given up because not only was his angle awful but his decision making was as well.

The aforementioned Brandon Stephens is basically the target whenever a CB is being targeted. If I am supposed to believe it is a scheme problem then why is it that whoever Humphrey covers is always blanketed (if this defense was not terrible I would say he would make all pro this year and he still might), and even Wiggins looks decent in coverage, and great for a rookie. It is literally just Stephens that gets targeted every single game when you go to a corner.

Meanwhile over the middle it seems like Roquan has basically just gotten lost covering people. His pass coverage has been abysmal. He loses the RB, he loses the TE, and just seems to always be a little behind which is odd because it is out of character but its clearly him not playing well and they cannot actually replace him.

That is the reason I am tempted to believe it is a "play better" bit of logic. Humphrey and Hamilton still look great, and even the role players are looking good (sometimes better than expected). It is literally just those 3 that just seem to fall apart in coverage.

I don't think Stephens has had a great year, but he's largely been lined up against WR1. There are always going to be more targets going his way when faced against the top dog. We also know his issue though - he can't get his head turned around. He's rarely getting beat like a drum. He's always in the hip pocket, but film don't lie and they're attacking the weakness there.

With that being said, I think you nailed the big issues. Consolidated, it's the middle of the field. Marcus Williams is blowing coverage after coverage. He actually had some good moments during the game last night, but they don't matter when you can't do the job consistently. I don't have much of an explanation for what's going on at LBer admittedly. Roquan seems to be keying just a tad late and is a step behind everything.

The secondary to me is 100% a player thing. Marcus has been the main culprit, but every single player in that group that has played significant snaps has had at least a couple blown coverages this season. I'm mostly worried about the coaching and/or scheme and/or philosophy for our ILBs, because they seem to be the biggest breakdown on a consistent basis.

I saw marcus jump down on a route and he maybe thought that stephens was gonna cover chase all the way through.. i think they just arent on the same page.. marcus may just have to play things safe instead of being so instinctive

I've watched too much film of Marcus biting on a crosser in front of his face in which that zone is already occupied by another defender while someone runs free deep to pin it on anyone but him. It's not easy to tell responsibilities directly, but when you see Stephens playing the sideline/deep third while a WR makes a break to the unoccupied deep middle, that's on the S 10 times out of 10.

Stephens was a S originally wasn't he? Feels like they just have to keep tinkering til they find the right combo. Tra White maybe gives them the option to try even more combinations. They can't be that far from finding something that works, Hump/Hamilton/Ar'Darius/Wiggins are playing well.

I know this hoe ain’t complaining after slipping on a route

I hate Tweets in a microcosm. Did they give any more context? There could be a lot more to this than him getting 5 touches. Could be that maybe he’s saying two sides to him slipping or maybe in anticipation for the trip to PIT and his departure from there and Carolina

Marcus with one arm last year was better than Marcus with two arms this year.

Fucking Christ if we had last year’s defense with this year’s offense we’d absolutely win it all but I just don’t see us doing it this year unless Orr has a coming to god moment
he needs a Flacco moment in the 2012-13 playoffs.

JC, Marcus looks like me playing safety in high school. He is so lost
