2019 Forum Mock: Discussion Thread

So, now I see why the last couple FA periods were uncharacteristically dead... people saving up for OL day.

a first and 5th for a guy that is getting close to retirement. Damn!

he's 34. He's not going anywhere for several more years. Plus we play this game on a one year basis.

he's still playing an extremely high level. I could see him playing a few more years. Houston is in win now mode and I have Staley's air apparent on the roster playing RT. It was a no brainer for both teams, plus Mike McGlinchey gets moved to left tackle.

Further, Houston did pretty well with zero offensive line last year. Look at them now with this OL! They have 4 of 5 outstanding OL players now. Watson might not get a grass stain on his jersey for a while

This is always where the differences lie in this game. I save my rosters in a document so I can look back in a couple of years and see how I did, so I tend to look at it a little more long term. Some, like you, only care about this year. No one's right or wrong - just a difference in how to play the game.

I get it, and one of the best parts of this game is that everyone gets to run their team with whatever goal they have in mind. To me, I want to set my team up for sustained success. To others that may not be the case. To me that was an extreme overpay for a 34 year-old player in a league that consistently has players have drastically reduced production after 30. For one year, it could work out. For longer? I'd rather draft a guy with that pick or get someone younger for it.

You beat me to it

Every team needs a mix of veterans and young players. Who says that my picks won't still be spent on quality offensive line players? I still have a first, second, third, fifth and seventh round picks. Most people on this board tend to overvalue their players and my experience has been that very few people are willing to trade OL players. I like the challenge of building an OL and I have done a great job taking Houston's dumpster fire OL and turning it into a top 10 or top 5 unit. Most of the OL players are young and on reasonable contracts. Staley is a bit of an exception but will be able to groom the younger players that I draft. Look at the defense on this team. What offense can score more than about 14 points against these guys?

I think it depends on the team, too. For instance, I'm the Chargers this year. They have an aging QB with a closing window. While building for the future is certainly part of the plan, I'm not going to be out here looking for the heir apparent at QB. I'm building to compete in the short window while also having an eye to the future.

If the Chargers were on the brink and had a need at LT, I'd consider making a move like that. It's just hard to justify with Watson on a rookie deal and the Texans still having a large window. Just comes down to the differences in how to play.

I appreciate the point of view. At this point, I think Houston is good enough to win the Super Bowl as presently constructed and into the future, but Staley really secures it for a few years. I went for it. What can I say. Staley is really the only "old" veteran on the team. Most of what has been constructed will be there for a long time. Houston has plenty of draft capital to also find Staley's replacement over the next few years when he does retire.

The hardest justification for me would be that Hopkins turned into Staley +. As mentioned before, it's certainly your prerogative, but man, I could just never see myself trading Hopkins. I'll figure out LT some other way lol

But it's all in what you make it. This game certainly isn't over and you have plenty of time and resources to continue to improve that team.

This Fluker bidding is wild. He signed a 2 year contract worth $6M total, with $1M guaranteed in real life. Up to 9 stars!

Part of it for me is also that I would rather have a healthy Watson all year long and no Hopkins rather than having Hopkins and an injured Watson.
