2025 Offseason Thread

Crazy, i didnt even know he hasnt signed wtf. I wonder whats the deal with that

Bro, that’s what the conversation has been about the last few pages lol

Texans and Browns gave their 2nd round picks (picks 33 and 34 I believe) fully guaranteed contracts (not normal for 2nd rounders) so now all of the 2nd round picks are holding out and requesting the same thing.

Starks did.

This shit with 2nd rounders is stupid. I am all for guys getting a bag but they have no justification asking for full guarantees.
Mike Green in particular. Half the league didn't even want to draft him.

Green doesn't want to be the one who caves and lets everyone else down and the senior players are probably backing him in that. The NFL comparatively screws over their players compared to other sports and rookies are the ones who get screwed the most.

Rookie contracts are a bargain yet teams colluding owners don't even want to pay them the full amount. I don't blame Green one bit for holding out.

Well and the irony is its the players own union who was the one's who pushed to restrict rookie contracts. The owners were largely totally fine with letting the market dictate values for rookies.

The "compared to other leagues" thing really sort of gets defeated when you do actual comparisons of player injuries across sports, as well as roster sizes. The NFL is significantly higher risk of injury with gigantically more mouths to feed.

As far as the whole 2nd round group thing, it'll solve itself. My guess is the NFL teams will largely hold steady and not do anything. Players will cave or come to some sort of modified middle ground. The teams generally aren't going to lose any sleep if they guys don't show up on time, it doesn't cost them anything at the moment, and these guys piss away a shit ton of leverage if they actually decide to not sign and sit out the year.

If people think NFL owners are vindictive and collude now... wait until you see what happens when a handful of guys refuse to sign rookie deals and head back into the draft next year. A year older, a year away from football, having pissed off a large chunk of the people who control their monetary futures. Shedeur Sanders "plummet" will seem like he went top 10.

I think the higher injury risk and shorter career is an argument in favour of the rookies holding out, and fully guaranteed contracts across the sport, as is the fact that the NFL is far richer than any other league.

There probably will be some sort of compromise but the NFL owners colluding wouldn't be a great look at the moment. Doesn't mean they won't do it. They don't care how look to us and the union is a disaster at the moment.

Though the current state of the NFLPA will probably eventually lead to some house cleaning and new, more militant leadership (or a breakway union) and we will see a bit of a standoff over fully guaranteed contracts at some point over the next few years.

also the NFLPA is currently embroiled in its own scandal over the current makeup of the leadership (and how Lloyd Howell even got the job in the first place)

i doubt they're putting many efforts into making this happen for 2nd round picks... i reckon it's mostly just agents on this issue

From a players perspective, sure it is. From a Owners perspective, a) individual players don't matter, b) they assume more risk with fully gtd contracts, and c) the NFLPA lobbied for the existing rookie system, so it's their mess to clean up.

Realistically speaking, IF fully gtd contracts were ever to become a thing, it probably wouldn't change things that much. Why? Because there would be very few, if any, contracts that extended beyond like 3 years. All it would do is push players into FA more frequently, which long term, the fans would hate and so would the players. And in negotiations, the Owners would certainly ask for many concessions in order to agree to this. Including the players getting a lower cut of the existing pie.
High end players would get the same gtd $ they get now and for the same duration of time, and the lower and mid-tier players would all be signing 1 or 2 year deals with the same gtd $ they're getting today.
AND, it'll dramatically change cap management, as five year bonus prorations and void years will become less frequent, and teams will have to be much more stringent on how to manage the cap year to year.

Players MIGHT like it. Owners will hate it and the fans will absolutely despise it.

And you are correct, i.e. the Owners don't give a fuck what it "looks like" in terms of collusion. Both sides publicly collude with each other all the time to push whatever agenda they want. NFLPA included in that.

Correct. It's the agents.

Even just agents pushing their players to stand together still might give the rest of the NFL an example of the value of solidarity which could indirectly help with future negotiations.

The Shemar Stewart thing is hilarious. So the bengals are just completely out a first round pick if he does in fact return to school?
