Training Camp and the Preseason

Taking Michael Thomas or Whitehair would have been my choice. We
haven't had a good 2nd round pick since 2014 and even that wasn't mind blowing.

Hopefully EDC can fix that next season. Of course you could say out 2nd round pick in 2018 was moving up to take Lamar Jackson.

I know, just having a crack at it.

Obviously we should’ve taken jack over Correa, and even moreso Michael Thomas, but still, just poking fun.
I was so pissed when we gave that pick to Jacksonville and they took Jack, because I was so happy he fell to us, then I think we moved down again and took Correa and I was like...WHO? Not a big fan of how that draft scenario played out. I was pretty pissed at Ozzie at the time. I know he had knee issues but I thought he was seriously worth the second round pick. I was absolutely right.

Only because Ozzie wanted to get faster on defense. Correa, Kaufusi and Judon had the athletic profile but only Judon had the film to back it up (even though it was against D2)

Ill say this at the moment ive got 48 guys i think are almost certainly making the roster barring real surprise which leaves 5 spots which i think will be a competition between these players below to win those spots (note almost certainly at least 1 corner, 1 DL and 1 WR come from the following group):

Trace Mcsorley
Jaleel Scott
Antoine Wesley
Michael Floyd
Greg Senat
Pat Ricard
Daylon Mack
Gerald Willis
Shane Ray
Justin Bethel
Cyrus Jones
Iman Marshall
Maurice Canady

at the moment my feeling is that the 5 will be... Trace Mcsorley, Jaleel Scott, Daylon Mack, Justin Bethel and Cyrus Jones

Willis could be the big outlier here if he shows really well in preseason because under the radar hes had some glowing reports in camp and ive heard basically nothing from mack but i also feel like mack's game translates to the future of our defence more obviously

really tough cuts - and this could completely change based on preseason... Greg Senat, Antoine Wesley and Gerald Willis have the most to gain from the preseason

the other thing is in the back of my mind i keep remembering pat ricard and also just how well his training camp appears to have been going and the fact that he still seems to be in Roman's plans as a fullback (on top of him also flexing in that DL backup role) but he is going to have to prove himself as versatile in the option game which means probably becoming a receiver

I think another spot could open up depending on what happens with Dixon. Not so sure that we'll keep 4 backs on the roster and we could potentially try to trade Dixon before the season. Yes, he's great when he's on the field and the coaches have been singing his praises so far this off-season, but Ingram and Gus should be splitting most of the carries and we'll have Justice Hill to fill in for the rest. I'm not opposed to keeping Dixon, but I just don't know if there's enough carries to go around to make it worthwhile.

but im also reading this from matt weiss the ravens rb coach:

the fact that the ravens are breaking down the group as a 4 tells me a lot - but you're right dixon could well be on the bubble because he doesnt play special teams i just think hes one of those guys well find a roster spot for

We might not even be trying to move Dixon, but I could see a scenario in which he plays well during the pre-season and some teams start sniffing around to see if he's available. Dixon is a beast when he's on the field, but if some team starts offering Decosta a mid-round pick then I think he has to take it considering Dixon's history of not being able to stay on the field.

The DL is too crowded. We might need to trade Pierce because he's not at the top of my pecking order for next season. (Stanley, Judon,...) and Mack is basically his replacement.
I don't see how Ricard, Floyd and Canady make the roster as of now. McSorley depends on RG3's injury.

Pierce is a god tier NT and Mack hasn’t shown anything against nfl competition yet.

I LOVED Mack as a prospect, and was hype that we drafted him(and when he was on the board at that point it was so obvious we would take him) but he’s gotta put something together first

Given the emphasis on the run game, we will surely keep 4 backs? Backs get injured - if Ingram or Gus go down, Hill can't fill that role.

I like Pierce but carrying 7DL doesn't sound reasonable given how often we use "sub packages".

I would sooner trade Brandon Williams or Wormley before Pierce. Pierce is literally our best defensive lineman right now.

Williams would carry a heavy dead cap number because his guaranteed money would vest and wormley is probably worth a 6th at most. I don't want to trade pierce either but considering he is valuable and could leave after this year for only a comp pick, a trade might be worth exploring.

I like Mack a lot, but I would pay pierce whatever figure he thinks he deserves and cut Mack right now before parting ways with pierce.

Remember, we’ll be letting bwill walk soon, Mack is Williams replacement, not pierce. Mack could very well end up a phantom IR
